ffmpeg 8.1.3 for the GPU (PocketShell bundle 1)

Choose a tag to compare

@Taha-Raees Taha-Raees released this 03 Nov 19:12

FFmpeg 8.1.3 built for PocketShell's Debian 13 (arm64) Linux, so its Vulkan filters run on the phone's or tablet's Adreno GPU. Debian 13 ships FFmpeg 7.1, whose Vulkan filters return empty frames on this GPU driver.

Install

Inside PocketShell's Linux, as root:

ps-gpu get-ffmpeg

It downloads ps-ffmpeg-8.1.3-1-debian13-arm64.tar.xz, checks it against the SHA-256 pinned in ps-gpu, installs the codec libraries from Debian, and makes ffmpeg and ffprobe (in /usr/local/bin) version 8. Debian's FFmpeg 7.1 stays at /usr/bin/ffmpeg.

Use the GPU through ps-gpu, for example:

ps-gpu ffmpeg -init_hw_device vulkan=vk -filter_hw_device vk -i in.mp4 \
  -vf 'hwupload,nlmeans_vulkan,hwdownload,format=yuv420p' out.mp4

Measured on a Galaxy Tab S7 (Adreno 650): nlmeans_vulkan on 30 frames of 1080p took 44.7 s, against 197 s on the CPU, with matching output.

What is in it

FFmpeg 8.1.3, unmodified, built with Vulkan (shaderc), OpenCL, x264, x265, SVT-AV1, aom, dav1d, libvpx, Opus, LAME, Vorbis, Theora, Speex, WebP, JPEG XL, OpenJPEG, libass, FreeType, HarfBuzz, zimg, soxr, vid.stab, Rubber Band, snappy, libxml2 and GnuTLS.
