Release Notes – Pre-Beta GUI Build (v0.1.0)

Release Date: [Insert Date]
Version: v0.1.1 – Initial Code Editor Release
Stage: Pre-Beta (Tech Preview / Developer Preview)

Overview

You can now write code onboard

Key Features

Section 1: Program Input

  • Allows loading .txt files / writing programs containing 8085 programs written in the following format:

MVI H 00H
MVI L 80H
MVI B 0AH
MVI C 01H
MOV M C
INX H
INR C
. . .
. . .
. . .

  • Programs must follow a strict format: <address> <instruction> <operand(s)>, no commas, hex-suffixed with H.
  • Instruction set supported includes MVI, MOV, ADD, INX, INR, DCR, JNZ, HLT, etc.
  • The program By default starts from 0x0000H

Section 2: Live Register View

  • Displays current values of all 8085 registers:
  • A, B, C, D, E, H, L, M, PC, SP, Flags
  • Automatically updates live as each instruction is executed.
  • Flags update dynamically based on the last operation (Z, S, P, CY, AC).

Section 3: Memory Viewer

  • Visualizes entire memory map (0000H – FFFFH) in real-time.
  • Changes in memory during execution (e.g., via MOV M, C, STA, etc.) are immediately visible.

Section 4: Memory Editor

  • Interactive tool to manually edit memory values at any address.
  • Supports:
  • Entering custom hex values
  • Overwriting loaded program data
  • Real-time effect on program behavior if accessed during simulation

Experimental Features

  • Step-by-step execution mode (coming soon)
  • Program reset and re-run
  • Manual PC jump for custom execution flow

Limitations

  • Does not currently validate all instruction errors — ensure your .txt files are properly formatted.
  • Jump instructions like JNZ expect manually calculated destination addresses.

Installation & Usage

  1. Download the .exe file from the Releases section.
  2. Place it in any directory with your .txt program files.
  3. Double-click the .exe to launch the GUI.
  4. Use Section 1 to load your instruction file and begin simulation.

Ensure your text files follow the strict instruction formatting format as shown in the docs.

NOTICE: SDL.dll Missing or Not Found

If you encounter an error related to SDL3dll or similar SDL-related runtime issues when running the .exe, please follow these steps to resolve it:

How to Fix

  1. Download SDL3 Runtime:

  2. Extract the ZIP File:

    • Open the ZIP and locate the file: SDL3.dll inside the lib or lib/x64 folder.
  3. Copy SDL3.dll to System Directory:

    • Copy the SDL3.dll file.
    • Paste it into:
      C:\Windows\System32
  4. (Optional but Recommended):

    • Also paste a copy of SDL3.dll into the same folder where your .exe file is located.

That’s it!

After placing the DLL in the correct location, try running the .exe again. It should launch without any SDL-related issues.

SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) is a dependency used for GUI rendering. The .dll file is required at runtime but is not bundled by default with this build.

Feedback & Support

As this is a Pre-Beta release, user feedback is essential.

  • Found a bug? Report it on the GitHub Issues page.
  • Want a feature added? Suggest it in Discussions or via email.
  • Refer to the included PROGRAMMING.md for instruction formatting guidelines.

Roadmap for Beta

  • Full step-by-step execution & breakpoints
  • Error-checking & instruction validation
  • Label-based jump calculation (removing need for hard-coded addresses)
  • Stack visualization & I/O simulation
  • Exporting memory dump to .bin or .hex format
  • Cross-platform support (Linux/Mac)
