NowCaption 1.2.2

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Oct 07:14

Live captions for any audio on your Linux desktop, recognised entirely on your own computer. This release brings NowCaption's new speech model, v4: slightly fewer mistakes, with less than half the CPU time.

Install

With automatic updates (recommended):

flatpak install --user --from https://techlm77.github.io/NowCaption/nowcaption.flatpakref

Installed that way already? flatpak update gets 1.2.2.

Or download a file below — x86_64 for most PCs, aarch64 for 64-bit ARM — then:

flatpak install --user NowCaption-1.2.2-x86_64.flatpak

Or the AppImage, for Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12 and newer — no installation needed:

chmod +x NowCaption-1.2.2-x86_64.AppImage
./NowCaption-1.2.2-x86_64.AppImage

Gear Lever or AppImageUpdate can keep it up to date.

What's new in 1.2.2

  • Speech model v4. NowCaption's own model, trained further on transcripts that keep the first and last words of each recording, and rebuilt so it doesn't repeat the same work at every step:
    • Fewer wrong words when captioning continuously: 13.3% → 13.0% across meetings, calls, podcasts, speeches and noisy recordings, and 13.2% → 12.9% with a fresh stream per clip. On 3,200 other clips never used to choose the model: 12.4% → 12.3%.
    • Accents: 13.8% → 13.5% over 2,992 clips in 20 regions. Hard cases (gaming, names, numbers, live streams): 9.1% → 8.8%.
    • Less than half the CPU time. The speech model now needs about 7% of one CPU core for non-stop speech (was about 18%), and NowCaption on its own 0.073 CPU seconds per second of audio (was 0.161).
    • Words show as soon as before: 0.204 s after they are spoken at the median (was 0.210 s).
    • A smaller download (111 MB, was 127 MB) and about 20 MB less memory.
    • Still no words over background noise, and fewer over instrumental music (27 words in 40 clips, was 35).
  • Known limits:
    • Very occasionally v4 repeats a word several times ("sir sir sir sir sir sir sird" for an unusual name): in 4 of 9,762 test clips, where v3 did it in 1.
    • On LibriSpeech's harder audiobook speakers it is slightly worse in one of our tests (6.4% → 6.7% words wrong), though not in the others.
    • Some groups are slightly worse, though not beyond chance, such as Northern English accents (6.0% → 6.5%), and Common Voice's short sentences straight after a pause show 17 ms later.
    • The benchmark page lists every limitation with its numbers.
  • Benchmarks you can check. The benchmark page has every result with its 95% range, the hardware and how it was measured, and nowcaption-1.2.2-benchmark-results.tar.xz below has the per-clip results behind the tables. The reference transcripts are left out, as some test sets' licences don't allow passing them on.

Everything else works as in 1.2.1, and your settings and history are kept. The .zip and .tar.gz below contain the source code. The speech model is downloaded separately from the models-v4 release; its training data and licences, including the transcripts from NVIDIA's Parakeet TDT 0.6B v2, are listed in MODEL-LICENSES.md. To go back to the v3 model, install 1.2.1's .flatpak or AppImage from the 1.2.1 release.

NowCaption 1.2.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 27 Oct 09:28

Live captions for any audio on your Linux desktop, recognised entirely on your own computer. This release makes docked captions sit properly against a floating KDE Plasma panel.

Install

With automatic updates (recommended):

flatpak install --user --from https://techlm77.github.io/NowCaption/nowcaption.flatpakref

Installed that way already? flatpak update gets 1.2.1.

Or download a file below — x86_64 for most PCs, aarch64 for 64-bit ARM — then:

flatpak install --user NowCaption-1.2.1-x86_64.flatpak

Or the AppImage, for Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12 and newer — no installation needed:

chmod +x NowCaption-1.2.1-x86_64.AppImage
./NowCaption-1.2.1-x86_64.AppImage

Gear Lever or AppImageUpdate can keep it up to date.

What's new in 1.2.1

  • Docked captions and floating Plasma panels. A floating panel stops floating while a window touches it, but Plasma only counts app windows. Docked on the panel's edge, the captions touch it and maximised windows stop at the captions, so the panel kept floating. On KDE Plasma 6, while the captions are docked against a floating panel, NowCaption now turns that panel's floating off, and back on when you move the captions, choose Floating or quit (also at the next start if NowCaption ever crashes). Panels you set not to float yourself are left alone.
  • A new Flatpak permission lets NowCaption talk to Plasma for this. If you'd rather not allow it, run flatpak override --user --no-talk-name=org.kde.plasmashell io.github.Techlm77.NowCaption; the panel then keeps floating next to docked captions.
  • Plasma 5.27 has no way for apps to change a panel's floating, so there nothing changes: turn off Floating for that panel in Edit Mode, or dock the captions on another edge.

Everything else works as in 1.2.0, with the same v3 speech model from the models-v3 release. The .zip and .tar.gz below contain the source code.

NowCaption 1.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 27 Oct 02:12

Live captions for any audio on your Linux desktop, recognised entirely on your own computer. This release brings NowCaption's new speech model, v3: fewer mistakes in everyday speech, and captions that keep up after pauses.

Install

With automatic updates (recommended):

flatpak install --user --from https://techlm77.github.io/NowCaption/nowcaption.flatpakref

Installed that way already? flatpak update gets 1.2.0.

Or download a file below — x86_64 for most PCs, aarch64 for 64-bit ARM — then:

flatpak install --user NowCaption-1.2.0-x86_64.flatpak

Or the AppImage, for Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12 and newer — no installation needed:

chmod +x NowCaption-1.2.0-x86_64.AppImage
./NowCaption-1.2.0-x86_64.AppImage

Gear Lever or AppImageUpdate can keep it up to date.

What's new in 1.2.0

  • Speech model v3. NowCaption's own model, trained further so it keeps working after pauses, as the app hears speech:
    • About a fifth fewer wrong words when captioning continuously: 17.3% → 13.3% across meetings, calls, podcasts, accents and noisy recordings. Meetings: 25.8% → 16.4%.
    • The first words after a pause are wrong far less often: 28% → 17%.
    • Fewer mistakes for 16 of the 20 accent groups tested (all clips: 17.2% → 13.8%), and none clearly worse.
    • Words show a little sooner on average (13 ms at the median), with about the same CPU use.
  • Known limits:
    • A short sentence straight after a pause can show slightly later than before (about 26 ms at the median).
    • It needs about 30 MB more memory, and the download is 127 MB (was 101 MB).
    • Some targets set before training were not met: CPU (17.7% of one core, against a target of 15%; 1.1.x used 17.2%), word errors (13.3%, against 12.5%) and the delay target. The benchmark page lists every target, the full results with their ranges, and how they were measured.
  • Benchmarks you can check. The benchmark scripts are in benchmark/, and nowcaption-1.2.0-benchmark-results.tar.xz below has the per-clip results behind the tables: every clip's word errors and word times, and the recognised text where the test set's licence allows it. The reference transcripts are left out, as some test sets' licences don't allow passing them on.

Everything else works as in 1.1.16. The .zip and .tar.gz below contain the source code. The speech model is downloaded separately from the models-v3 release; its training data and licences are listed in MODEL-LICENSES.md.

Speech model v4 (CC-BY-4.0)

Choose a tag to compare

@Techlm77 Techlm77 released this 29 Oct 07:09

Speech model used by NowCaption 1.2.2 and later. This is not an app release.

nowcaption-fastconformer-en-80ms-cc-by-v4.tar.bz2: NowCaption's own fine-tune of NVIDIA's
stt_en_fastconformer_hybrid_large_streaming_multi
(transducer branch, 80 ms lookahead), as an int8 ONNX export for sherpa-onnx. v3 trained further on the
same 3,300 hours of CC0 and CC-BY English speech, with transcripts by NVIDIA's
Parakeet TDT 0.6B v2 (CC-BY-4.0) where the machine
labels v3 learned from leave out words at a clip's edges, and exported with an encoder that skips work
repeated at every step. Same size, tokens and architecture as v3.

  • Word errors on the eight ESB English test sets, through NowCaption's own caption pipeline: 13.04%
against 13.31% for v3 in continuous use (as the app runs), 12.89% against 13.18% with a fresh stream
per clip; 12.33% against 12.43% on 400 other clips per set never used to choose it. Accent test set
    (2,992 clips, 20 regions): 13.47% against 13.78%.
  • Less than half the CPU time: 7.2% of one Ryzen 7 7800X3D core for continuous real-time speech
    (v3: 17.7%); words show as soon as with v3 (median 0.204 s, v3 0.210 s). Known limits are in
    benchmark/README.md.
  • License: CC-BY-4.0, © NVIDIA; fine-tuned, exported
to ONNX and quantized to int8 by NowCaption. Training data, how it was trained and chosen, and the
files' SHA-256 are in the archive's README.md (the same text as
    MODEL-CARD-v4.md).

NowCaption 1.1.16

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 24 Oct 17:16

Live captions for any audio on your Linux desktop, recognised entirely on your own computer. This release is a round of fixes from a full check of NowCaption, plus easier ways to reach the menu.

Install

With automatic updates (recommended):

flatpak install --user --from https://techlm77.github.io/NowCaption/nowcaption.flatpakref

Installed that way already? flatpak update gets 1.1.16.

Or download a file below — x86_64 for most PCs, aarch64 for 64-bit ARM — then:

flatpak install --user NowCaption-1.1.16-x86_64.flatpak

Or the AppImage, for Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12 and newer — no installation needed:

chmod +x NowCaption-1.1.16-x86_64.AppImage
./NowCaption-1.1.16-x86_64.AppImage

Gear Lever or AppImageUpdate can keep it up to date.

What's new in 1.1.16

  • Restart after a problem. More options has a Restart button under Listen to. Use it after an error or when you change sound devices; the error messages now point to it.
  • History you can trust:
    • The newest lines are saved when you log out or shut down, not only when you quit.
    • Clear this session always removes the session from the history.
    • If the history can't be written, NowCaption says so and keeps trying.
  • Steadier captions:
    • The box keeps its width when a long message shows.
    • Changing the colour or background no longer moves words between rows.
    • The captions go back to your chosen screen when it's plugged in again.
    • New lines glide up without a final nudge.
  • Smoother effects. Pixel effects no longer jump or flicker when a new line starts, and turning off animations for your desktop stops all motion at once.
  • Plasma 5.27. On KDE Plasma 5.27 (such as Kubuntu 24.04), docked captions now float over fullscreen games and videos, as they already did on Plasma 6.
  • Transcript:
    • Searching a long transcript no longer slows the captions.
    • You can select text with the keyboard.
    • Closed windows free their memory.
  • Easier ways in:
    • On a touchscreen, touch and hold the captions to open the menu.
    • Right-click NowCaption in your app launcher for Open transcript, More options and Quit.
  • AppImage: it now includes the licence notices of the libraries it bundles.

The .zip and .tar.gz below contain the source code. The speech model is unchanged and is downloaded separately from the models-v2 release; its training data and licences are listed in MODEL-LICENSES.md.

NowCaption 1.1.15

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 24 Oct 14:46

Live captions for any audio on your Linux desktop, recognised entirely on your own computer. This release lets you choose how new words appear, with four new pixel effects, and adds a More options window.

Install

With automatic updates (recommended):

flatpak install --user --from https://techlm77.github.io/NowCaption/nowcaption.flatpakref

Installed that way already? flatpak update gets 1.1.15.

Or download a file below — x86_64 for most PCs, aarch64 for 64-bit ARM — then:

flatpak install --user NowCaption-1.1.15-x86_64.flatpak

Or the AppImage, for Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12 and newer — no installation needed:

chmod +x NowCaption-1.1.15-x86_64.AppImage
./NowCaption-1.1.15-x86_64.AppImage

Gear Lever or AppImageUpdate can keep it up to date.

What's new in 1.1.15

  • Choose how new words appear. Right-click the captions and choose More options…. New words can appear at once, fade in (still the default), or arrive as pixels:

    • Pixel assemble flies them together from left to right.
    • Pixel dissolve switches them on bit by bit.
    • Mosaic sharpen brings them into focus from big blocks.
    • Pixel rain drops them into place.

Each comes in a fast, normal or slow speed.

  • Quick to read. The pixels rush in and then settle, so a word is readable after about 90 ms at normal speed and 54 ms at fast. Each word lands exactly as it reads, because its pixels are cut from the text itself.

  • More options window. It shows a sample caption with your choice, so you can compare effects before pressing Apply. Closing it without Apply keeps your captions as they were.

  • A tidier menu. It now reads Appearance, Position, Transcript, then More options. Listen to (desktop audio or microphone) moved into More options.

With animations turned off for your desktop, new words still appear at once, whichever effect is chosen.

The .zip and .tar.gz below contain the source code. The speech model is unchanged and is downloaded separately from the models-v2 release; its training data and licences are listed in MODEL-LICENSES.md.

@github-actions github-actions released this 24 Oct 10:28

Live captions for any audio on your Linux desktop, recognised entirely on your own computer. This release makes docked captions behave like a panel, slides them smoothly between positions, and brings the AppImage to older systems.

Install

With automatic updates (recommended):

flatpak install --user --from https://techlm77.github.io/NowCaption/nowcaption.flatpakref

Installed that way already? flatpak update gets 1.1.13.

Or download a file below — x86_64 for most PCs, aarch64 for 64-bit ARM — then:

flatpak install --user NowCaption-1.1.13-x86_64.flatpak

Or the AppImage, for Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12 and newer — no installation needed:

chmod +x NowCaption-1.1.13-x86_64.AppImage
./NowCaption-1.1.13-x86_64.AppImage

Gear Lever or AppImageUpdate can keep it up to date.

What's new in 1.1.13

  • Docked captions act like a panel. Docked at the top, bottom, left or right, the captions now sit next to the panels you already have, instead of pushing them aside.
  • Captions over fullscreen apps (KDE Plasma). While a fullscreen game or video is open on their screen, docked captions switch to your floating box on top of it, and dock again when it closes. The Flatpak asks for one extra permission for this, to talk to KWin.
  • Smooth moves between positions. Choosing another position slides the captions into their edge and out of the new one, and maximised windows beside them grow and shrink along with the slide instead of jumping. Floating captions fade.
  • AppImage for older systems. The AppImage now runs on Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12 and newer: on systems older than 2024 it brings its own C library.

The .zip and .tar.gz below contain the source code. The speech model is unchanged and is downloaded separately from the models-v2 release; its training data and licences are listed in MODEL-LICENSES.md.

What's new in 1.1.12

  • Steady captions in long conversations. After several minutes of nonstop talk, the words already on screen used to jump between rows every few seconds. Now they stay in their rows, and only the newest row changes as words come in.
  • No more hopping words. A comma appearing or disappearing at the end of a row no longer pushes a word onto the next row.

The .zip and .tar.gz below contain the source code. The speech model is unchanged and is downloaded separately from the models-v2 release; its training data and licences are listed in MODEL-LICENSES.md.

@github-actions github-actions released this 24 Oct 07:05

Live captions for any audio on your Linux desktop, recognised entirely on your own computer. This release lets you dock the captions along any edge of the screen, and the caption box now keeps up with Text size.

Install

With automatic updates (recommended):

flatpak install --user --from https://techlm77.github.io/NowCaption/nowcaption.flatpakref

Installed that way already? flatpak update gets 1.1.11.

Or download a file below — x86_64 for most PCs, aarch64 for 64-bit ARM — then:

flatpak install --user NowCaption-1.1.11-x86_64.flatpak

Or the AppImage, for systems from 2024 or newer (glibc 2.39: Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 13, Fedora 40, Arch) — no installation needed:

chmod +x NowCaption-1.1.11-x86_64.AppImage
./NowCaption-1.1.11-x86_64.AppImage

Gear Lever or AppImageUpdate can keep it up to date.

What's new in 1.1.11

  • Dock the captions. Right-click the captions and pick a little screen under Position: floating, as before, or docked at the top, bottom, left or right. Docked captions take that strip of the screen, and maximised or snapped windows make room for them, so nothing is covered. Drag the edge between the captions and your windows to resize both together. On KDE Plasma, Hyprland and Sway.
  • Text size keeps up. The caption box now grows and shrinks with the text on every click of Text size, instead of a step behind. Floating captions keep their bottom edge in place, so whatever is lined up under them stays lined up.
  • The menu always fits. The right-click menu opens toward the free space on the screen, so it no longer runs off the bottom or needs scrolling when the captions are low on the screen or docked.
  • Smaller fixes. The resize cursor stays while you drag an edge, and docked captions show messages such as "Transcript copied" in a corner, so the strip never changes size.
