Archives

• Open and extract almost anything: RAR / RAR5, 7z, ZIP, TAR (gz, bz2, xz, zst), ISO, DMG, CAB, PKG, DEB, CPIO, LZH, including multi-volume sets.
• Password-protected ZIPs (AES and classic), and Russian file names from Windows-made archives come out right instead of garbled.
• Create ZIP (optionally with an AES-256 password), 7z, TAR.*, DMG and ISO; compress a single file to gz, bz2, xz or zst.
• List an archive's contents or test its integrity without extracting.
• Safe by default: archives that try to write outside their folder are refused, and suspiciously huge "zip bombs" ask first.
• RAR is read-only: creating RAR archives is restricted by the RAR license.

Folders

• Drop a whole folder: convert everything inside by kind (Images → JPG, Video → MP4, Documents → PDF) into a mirrored "(converted)" folder.
• Batch: compress, strip metadata, OCR all scans, all images into one PDF or a collage, flatten nested folders, folder report.

New formats

• Camera RAW (DNG, CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, RAF, ORF, RW2), JPEG XL and PSD as input.
• ICO and ICNS output: favicons and app icons from any image.
• FB2 e-books ↔ EPUB, PDF, DOCX and more.
• JSON ↔ YAML ↔ XML ↔ plist ↔ CSV.
• ASS/SSA subtitles.

Install

1. Download Petalwheel-1.2.0.dmg below and drag Petalwheel to Applications, or run brew install --cask thealexray/tap/petalwheel.
2. Not notarized yet: on macOS 15+ open it once, then System Settings › Privacy & Security › Open Anyway; on macOS 14 right-click › Open.
3. Requires macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon. tar.zst needs brew install zstd.

Petalwheel 1.1.0

Kumquat is now Petalwheel

The app has a new name and a new icon. It was renamed to avoid confusion with an unrelated project that also uses the name "Kumquat". Everything else stays the same.

• Your settings, history, presets and watch folders carry over automatically on first launch.
• New app icon: the wheel of petals you use every day.
• Homebrew: brew install --cask thealexray/tap/petalwheel. If you installed the old kumquat cask, run brew uninstall --cask kumquat and install petalwheel instead.
• Old links to TheAlexRay/kumquat keep working and redirect here.

If you had Kumquat installed, you can move Kumquat.app to the Trash after installing Petalwheel.

2. This build isn't notarized yet, so macOS blocks the first launch:
   • macOS 15 and later: open Petalwheel once, then System Settings › Privacy & Security › Open Anyway.

• Privacy: converting an HTML file (or Markdown with remote images) no longer downloads anything from the internet. Remote images, stylesheets and fonts are removed before conversion; local images are kept. In 1.0.0 the system converter could fetch https images referenced by the file.
• Interface texts use short dashes.
