The first Windows version of The Card Place: Hearts, Euchre, Spades, Cribbage and Sheephead against the computer, entirely offline, and keyboard and screen reader friendly.

These are native ports, not the web games in a window. The rules, the computer players and every sentence the games say are the same as the web and iPhone versions, and the same kinds of test suites stand behind them.

What's in it

  • Five games with their rule options:

    • points to win in each game;
    • stick the dealer and going alone in Euchre;
    • 61 or 121 in Cribbage;
    • three to six players, leasters and doublers in Sheephead.

    Euchre, Cribbage and Sheephead have Easy, Normal and Hard computer players.

  • Your hand is one Tab stop.

    • Left and Right move card by card, Home and End go to the ends, and 1 to 9 jump straight to a card.
    • Enter or Space plays a card, or chooses it for a pass, a throw or a bury.
    • A card you can't play stays and says why.
  • The same keys as the web games:

    • H, T, L, S and the others read your hand, the trick, the last trick and the scores;
    • N continues or deals;
    • R repeats;
    • G goes to the log;
    • ? lists the keys.
  • The Review menu holds every review command.

  • Focus follows the turn, to your first playable card or to your bid. It never pulls you out of an open menu or dialog.

  • Choose what you hear in Settings ▸ Screen Reader Announcements:

    • results of what you do;
    • hints;
    • other players' plays, bids and calls;
    • tricks and scores;
    • deals and messages to you;
    • your turn.

    Refusals, and anything you ask for, are always spoken. Everything is in the game log and the status bar either way: Ctrl+F9 reads the status bar again, and Ctrl+Shift+F9 moves to it.

  • The pace of the computer players: Immediate, Brisk, Comfortable, Relaxed, or Wait for me. Continue is always there during a pause.

  • A table drawn for everyone:

    • a green felt with the seats around it in play order;
    • large cards with the suit printed;
    • an amber focus ring;
    • a hand that fans to fit.

    Windows high contrast themes are followed, live, and Ctrl+Plus zooms to 200%.

Known limits

  • Playing against other people isn't in this version.
  • A game in progress isn't kept when you close the app.
  • There's no Report a Bug form yet. Crashes are written to %APPDATA%\TheCardPlace\TheCardPlace.log.

Download

TheCardPlace-x64.exe for Intel and AMD PCs, or TheCardPlace-arm64.exe for Arm PCs,
such as a Surface Pro X or a Copilot+ PC. Each is one program with nothing to install: save
it anywhere and run it. The first start takes a few seconds longer while it unpacks.
Settings are kept in %APPDATA%\TheCardPlace.

It needs Windows 10 version 1809 or later, or Windows 11. Both programs are signed by
"kelly ford"; Windows SmartScreen may still ask about a new download until the publisher
builds up reputation.

The Card Place is also on the web and the iPhone: https://theideaplace.net/projects
