TurnOver 2.0, build 23

Features wait for a whole build; point releases carry fixes only (27 Oct 2026).

New to try

  • Searching in the App Store, Music and Podcasts: Return in the search field reads the results as a plain list, from
Apple's public catalog, and Return on one opens its page. The App Store's own results page couldn't be read reliably
on macOS 27.2. When the catalog can't answer, the page is read instead. TV keeps its own page, as Apple TV+ isn't in
    the catalog.
  • Screen recognition finds a window's controls as well as its text: the recognition key pressed twice (VO-Shift-Y,
or TurnOver R) finds them, in under a second; pressed once, it reads the text. Each row is a control ("Save,
button") and Return clicks it. It uses Apple's on-device recognition and, with Apple Intelligence on, the Mac's own
model, which is given a few seconds to add what it sees; nothing leaves the Mac. macOS 26 or later.
  • After Return clicks something in a screen recognition result, the screen is recognised again a moment later, so a
dialog's OK is followed by the screen that comes after it without pressing the key again. Settings, Screen
recognition, "After Return clicks something, recognise again" turns it off, and the result closes after a click
    as before.
  • Screen recognition can recognise again whenever the screen changes: Settings, Screen recognition, "Recognise again
when the screen changes" (it was "Read new text as it appears"). The window is looked at each second, and when it
has changed, the result is updated and what is new is read; for controls too. Off by default.
  • Screen recognition reads cards side by side as cards: a name over a button, four across, was "Download Download
Download Download" and then the four names (Parallels' installation assistant, issue 73); now each card is a row,
top to bottom, and Tab moves between them. The controls result reads in the same order as text: a sidebar before
    the pane beside it.
  • A screen recognition result that comes back after you've moved to another app no longer opens over it.
  • Natural voices for everyone: 25 English voices made on your Mac, on Apple silicon with macOS 15 or later. In
Settings, Speech, beside Voice, choose Download natural voices (about 170 MB, once; Remove natural voices takes them
off again). Then pick one under Voice to speak everything,
with the rate, volume and EQ as for any voice, or under Natural voice for say all only. Other languages keep your Mac
voice. They are Phonon's voices; Kokoro's, the first natural voices, are gone, and a Kokoro voice chosen before
    becomes Maeve.
  • Progress bars beep as they move, as in NVDA: a short beep for each percent, rising in pitch from low at 0 to high
at 100. To hear the percentage instead (as before), both, or nothing, choose in Settings, Sounds, or in the
Verbosity list (VO-V). With NVDA keys, NVDA+U goes through them. A bar's beeps keep up with it as it moves, rather
than once a second. App Store downloads follow the same choice: beeps, or the app's name and percentage every 10
percent while the App Store is in front (it was every quarter, wherever you were), and "installed" at the end, as
before. A page's progress bar is now a line in browse
mode, so it can be read and followed.

Changed

  • Settings has a Sounds section: whose sounds, the sounds as you move and press, what you hear as TurnOver takes over,
progress bars, and lowering other sounds while TurnOver speaks (from General and Speech). With NVDA keys,
NVDA+Control+U opens it, as it opens NVDA's Audio settings.

  • Settings, Speech: "In the rotor", under Voice, puts the voice chosen there among the voices VO-Command-Shift steps
through, or takes it out, without going through every voice's switch below.

  • In a menu, a letter that leaves the same item highlighted (r, then u, for Russell) says that item again, where it
    said nothing.

  • The speech settings ring ends at punctuation: its last stop, sync with VoiceOver, has gone. VoiceOver's settings
are copied from the TurnOver menu, Copy VoiceOver settings.

  • The Games item has gone from the TurnOver menu's Tools: game reading is always on, and Steam's Big Picture switch and
Restart Steam are in Settings, Other apps' speech.

  • Braille: panning to another line moves the caret there, so the arrows carry on from the line read. The Braille section of Settings offers Line by line (the default), To the text shown, or Off. Tethered to review, panning moves only the review cursor.

  • Braille: Apple USB and HID drivers are polled and written on the braille thread, as Bluetooth drivers are, so a
display does not hold up speech. Reads and writes cannot enter each other while a driver waits, the latest
pending frame is kept, and handing back to VoiceOver waits for the driver to unload.

  • VoiceOver keys: VO-Shift-L only describes: the picture under the cursor, or anywhere else what the window looks
like. VO-Shift-Y, a key of TurnOver's own (VoiceOver has none for it), recognises the window's text to read and
click, which VO-Shift-L used to do away from a picture. The notice for a window with nothing to read names both.
Describing a window needs the Mac's on-device model (Apple Intelligence on). Where VoiceOver reads an app,
VO-Shift-Y is VoiceOver's; the TurnOver layer's R (Command Control Comma, then R) recognises there.

  • An app whose window accessibility doesn't report at all (Parallels Desktop's virtual machine) is treated as a window
with nothing to read: TurnOver says so and names the screen recognition key, and screen recognition reads that
app's window, not the whole screen with the windows behind it.

  • A window with nothing TurnOver can read (a custom-drawn or OpenGL window: Parallels' installation assistant, Bambu
Studio's plate) says so a moment after it comes to the front, and names the key for screen recognition in the
keyboard style in use: VO-Shift-Y with VoiceOver keys (and VO-Shift-L to describe it), the TurnOver key with R with
NVDA or JAWS keys. It said
"window" and then nothing. Issue 74.

  • The verbosity manager: Settings, Item details now lists what is said about an item, in the order it is said (name,
kind, value, state, help text, keyboard shortcut, position, level), each on or off, moved up or down with a button.
"For" chooses the list for everywhere or for the app last in front. (It orders an item's pieces; a Mail message's
sender, subject and time come as one name, so their order isn't changed by it.) The three old switches (help text, shortcut, position) are rows of the
list now; a settings file from before keeps their values.

Fixed

  • An app allowed to speak through TurnOver could speak once after you'd switched away: the line that asked is now said
only with the app still in front. Issue 56.
  • A web page cut short at the reader's size limit said nothing and was taken as complete; it now says "page read in
part", as a page cut at the time limit does. Issue 58.
  • Notification banners went unread after Notification Centre restarted, until VO-O was pressed. Issue 80.
  • A Settings window left open across an install knocked on the new TurnOver every two seconds; it now stops and says to
    open Settings again. Issue 77.
  • With NVDA or JAWS keys where VoiceOver reads, a style change could leave the key layer without its tap. Issue 53.
  • Settings, Sounds, "Whose sounds" counted only in part with VoiceOver off: choosing VoiceOver's left the boundary,
headings, moving and pressing on TurnOver's set. VoiceOver's now plays VoiceOver's own sounds for links, misspellings,
boundaries, pop-ups, a braille display and the rest it has, and TurnOver's set for what VoiceOver says instead
(headings, lists, moving and pressing, the modes); TurnOver's is the set throughout. Until you choose, VoiceOver's, as
before; with VoiceOver off that now means its boundary and braille display sounds too.
  • VoiceOver's sounds were quieter than TurnOver's own, by 5 to 10 dB for most, so a link's blip all but vanished: each
now plays at the set's loudness. A page loaded plays VoiceOver's "web area loaded" sound, the one in its own list.
  • Copy VoiceOver settings copied nothing on macOS 27.2 when VoiceOver's export kept its voice in a new place; it now
finds the voice there and copies the rate, verbosity and typing echo with it. Issue 221. Reported by a tester.
  • Settings, Speech: the voices for other languages and the rotor's voices couldn't be reached from the keyboard. Each
list is now behind a switch that Tab stops on. Issue 225. Reported by a tester.

TurnOver 2.0, build 22.5

Fixed

  • Command-B and Command-I report bold and italic on/off in TextEdit rich text and Ulysses with Markdown XL,
where those shortcuts were silent. Requires the apps’ English menus. Reported by the maintainer. Issue 212.
  • After unlocking, VoiceOver stays available until an ordinary app and keyboard input are ready. A failed return
to TurnOver retains a bounded retry; another lock or a deliberate reader choice cancels stale restoration.
VoiceOver already on before sleep remains on. Issue 204.
  • In JAWS keyboard style, Caps Lock U, O, J, L, M and Period move the text cursor as their arrow equivalents do,
rather than only moving the review cursor. Rapid reading commands keep their order, the keys work where
VoiceOver reads, and assigning one of these commands to its own arrow no longer causes a crash. Issue 144.
  • Text fields such as System Settings’ search field are read and respond to review keys when the app first
reports a temporary stand-in before the actual focused field. The focus check does not copy the field’s full
    text. Issue 195.
  • Returning to an app in browse mode keeps the reading position and mode when the same control regains focus
on the same page. Enter and Space act at that reading position instead of jumping back to the focused control.
    Issue 200.

TurnOver 2.0, build 22.4

Fixed

  • Open and Save dialogs are read: a file dialog in TextEdit, or "browse for file" on a web page in Safari. macOS
draws them in a separate service, which TurnOver ignored as a process that isn't an application; the service
serving the app in front now counts as that app. Reported by Maldalain (issue 14).
  • After the Mac wakes and is unlocked, TurnOver takes over again when the swap is off. TurnOver turns VoiceOver on
for the lock screen, which it can't read; with the swap off it then never turned VoiceOver off again, so VoiceOver
stayed in charge after every wake until it was turned off by hand. A VoiceOver that was already on before the Mac
slept stays on. Reported by the maintainer.
  • App Store: Return on a search result opens it. The results page's container reports no size, so every row counted
as off screen and Return said "could not reach … try again" for an app plainly on screen; the page's list, or the
window, now gives the area, and a page with no scroll bar asks the row to scroll into view. Search results that
arrive in stages (11, then 24, then 36 for "water") are read again as they settle, the place kept by name, and the
Store's own hit test, which lags a new results page, is given up to a second to agree before the icon is clicked.
Reported by the maintainer (Keynote, from a search for Pages; then the water apps).
  • VO-Left and VO-Right can move past segmented controls, such as the buttons in a SwiftUI picker, without getting
    trapped between their segments.
  • Finder's desktop: each item says its own place ("3 of 35"), not "35 of 35" for every one. Reported by jcast77
    (issue 140).
  • TurnOver Key: pressing Command Control Period again just after "TurnOver off" no longer leaves the key doing nothing
until its helper restarts (a contributor's change).
  • An app that refuses TurnOver's notification sign-ups as it comes forward (Telegram from the Mac App Store) no longer
holds TurnOver up for seconds: the second try runs off the main thread, as the first one does (a contributor's
    change).
  • Windows style: Option D, which opens the Desktop folder, no longer leaves TurnOver silent while macOS asks for
permission to the Desktop folder (a contributor's change).
  • Copy VoiceOver settings reads a VoiceOver export that stores its voice the newer, flattened way; it failed with
"no voice" for such an export (a contributor's change).
  • Pages: a document just opened can be read with the arrows. Pages reported its page layout as the focus, with no
caret in it; the body text takes the focus instead (a contributor's change).
  • Next and previous item reach the texts between the buttons of a System Settings pane, which said "nothing to
review" at every press (a contributor's change).
  • JAWS keys do what JAWS's do: Caps Lock Apostrophe, Option Caps Lock X, Caps Lock V and Caps Lock F3 have their
JAWS meanings rather than the Windows style's keys underneath; Caps Lock F7, F6 and F5 list a page's links,
headings and form fields; and Caps Lock Left and Right Arrow stay the previous and next item in a text field (a
    contributor's changes).
  • Clicks are made as a hand makes them, the pointer there first and the button held a moment, so a dialog that
ignored a quick click (Bambu Studio's) takes it.
  • Turning VoiceOver on uses VoiceOver's own shortcut first, which is quicker, and opens VoiceOver only if that fails.
  • The TurnOver layer's K changes the keyboard style without TurnOver stepping in where VoiceOver leads, and the new
style's name is said once, not by both readers.
  • The spoken Tab hint in password fields is gone: it got in the way of moving around.
  • Settings: the Experimental group is a plain section; its disclosure triangle wouldn't open from the keyboard.
  • The control channel between TurnOver, its Settings window and TurnOver Key keeps every message whole under load,
and a late reply can no longer reach the wrong client (a contributor's change).
  • Plugins from the library: an archive that expands well beyond its stated size, or holds files its listing doesn't
show, is refused (a contributor's change).
  • Speech: when TurnOver's voice never starts as it is needed (the system voice stuck), VoiceOver is given the speech
back instead of staying muted. Issue 71.
  • Starting TurnOver waits until its keyboard access is really working before it mutes VoiceOver, so a start can't
    leave keys unheard. Issue 52.
  • Moving by character keeps a letter or emoji made of several parts whole, in text fields and in Terminal.
    Issues 159 and 180.
  • Searching a window for the next heading, link or control no longer holds TurnOver up, and results that arrive
after you've moved to another app are dropped. Issue 119.
  • App Store: pages are read in the page's own order, the first content is read before shelves further down finish
loading, a late page load can no longer move the selection or act on an old row, and confirming a purchase needs a
fresh press of its own. Issues 54, 173, 174 and 176.
  • Music, Podcasts and TV: pages are read one at a time and a late read is dropped, the selection stays on the same
item when the page refreshes, and actions go to the window you're in. Issue 182.
  • TV: choosing Home in the sidebar goes to Home's page instead of staying on Search, and shelves are read as soon as
    they're ready. Issue 186.
  • Word: page reading checks that the window and the page range are still current, and Word's own sound at the start
or end of the text is left to Word, so it isn't heard twice. Issue 178.
  • Mail: a message is read even when it sits beside an editable reply area. Issue 179.
  • Safari: a late reply from Find or a tab switch is no longer spoken after you've moved on. Issue 181.
  • Speech recovery: a voice queue still stuck after sleep or wake-up grace gets another recovery attempt. A late
replacement cannot overwrite a player that has recovered or been replaced, and restarting waits at most two
seconds for its spoken warning, even if the system voice is stuck too. Issue 155.
  • Privacy: typed keys and braille cells are kept out of diagnostic logs, braille typing echo stays out of speech
history, and deleting a pending braille cell in a password field does not speak it. Helper diagnostics no longer
keep page titles or element text. Feedback reports remove old input and helper diagnostics even when speech is
    included. Issues 60, 61, 62 and 68.

TurnOver 2.0, build 22.3

Fixed

  • Typing echo: after a Backspace, the word said at the next space was the word before the one just typed when the
field was slow to take the space (TextEdit, WhatsApp). The field's word now counts only once the space is in; until
then TurnOver looks again, and after a tenth of a second says the letters typed.
  • JAWS keys: Caps Lock H reads the sentence, as in JAWS; it opened the Speech settings (a contributor's change).

TurnOver 2.0, build 22.2

Fixed

  • After the Mac wakes and is unlocked, TurnOver comes back. The lock turns VoiceOver on for the login window; the notice
of that arrived only after the wake, minutes later, and TurnOver took it for VoiceOver turned on by hand, so it stayed
off until quit and started again. The lock's own VoiceOver no longer counts, and once secure input is off TurnOver
looks again for up to ten seconds until an ordinary app is in front.
  • TurnOver Settings: Tab and Shift Tab are TurnOver's own in its window: the sidebar, then the section's controls in
screen order, round and round, whatever the Mac's Keyboard navigation setting says. With that setting off (the Mac's
default) the window's own Tab reached the sidebar and the ducking pop-up and nothing else, and TurnOver's generic
Tab fallback, sorting the sidebar by its middle, skipped the top half of the pane. Reported by four people on
AppleVis; reproduced here with the setting off and on.
  • Copying VoiceOver's settings with a Siri voice chosen in VoiceOver no longer sounds like a failure: the copy is
reported, then that the voice is a Siri voice, which Apple gives to Siri and VoiceOver alone, so TurnOver keeps its
own, with where to choose another. Reported on AppleVis.
  • NVDA and JAWS keys: Left Option on its own, when the Dock doesn't take the focus (macOS's own Move focus to the Dock
shortcut turned off), says so and where to turn it on, instead of nothing. Reported on AppleVis.
  • The shortcut menu (VO-Shift-M; Shift F10 or Right Option in the NVDA and JAWS styles) opens the menu of the item
TurnOver is on: its own menu action where it has one, else a right click in the middle of it. Control Return, the
fallback before, opened nothing in Finder or Safari, and on one Mac the desktop's menu instead of the item's. With no
item, TurnOver says so. Reported on AppleVis.
  • VoiceOver keys: after VO-Shift-Down into Safari's toolbar, VO-Right moves along it and bumps at its end. Safari
sends the focus TurnOver had put on the button back to the page, and the cursor followed it there: VO-Right then
bumped at once, or landed on the window's close button. Issue 106.
  • A password field says, once a run, that Tab or Shift Tab leaves it: macOS keeps every key from TurnOver in a
    password field, so VO-Left and VO-Right can't. Issue 107.
  • WhatsApp: Return on a conversation checks that it is the one now open before going to its message box. WhatsApp
answered the press with success and kept the conversation already open, so a link pasted and sent went to the
wrong person. On a mismatch the row is selected instead; if that fails too, TurnOver says which conversation is
open and stays in the list.
  • Spotlight on macOS 27 is read: Command Space says the search field, the letters typed go to it, Tab reaches the
microphone, Escape says it closed (Urh's change; Spotlight's panel is drawn by "Siri AI" there, which TurnOver didn't
    follow). Reported on AppleVis.

TurnOver 2.0, build 22.1

Fixed

  • One reader speaks at a time whatever the swap setting says. With "TurnOver and VoiceOver swap" off, turning VoiceOver
on left both talking over each other; now TurnOver goes quiet while VoiceOver is on and running, and comes back when
VoiceOver goes off (if that is what quietened it). Started with the swap off and VoiceOver on, TurnOver waits and says
    so through VoiceOver.
  • TurnOver Settings: Escape closes the window; the app quits with its last window and when TurnOver has gone (left
running with no window, only a force quit found it); Tab reaches every control in the window, pop-ups and sliders too,
whatever the Mac's Keyboard navigation setting (with it off, a Tab through Speech met only the ducking pop-up).
    Reported on AppleVis.
  • Keyboard navigation (System Settings, Keyboard) is turned on for the Mac once, with a welcome page saying so, since
TurnOver's Tab needs it where VoiceOver's keys did not.
  • Steam and its games always speak through TurnOver where Steam is installed: the switch for it is gone from Settings
and the Games menu (Steam itself says when it is asked to open its port, so off only hid speech). Reading Big Picture
    and Restart Steam stay.
  • NVDA and JAWS keys: Left Option D opens the Desktop folder in Finder, as Windows D reaches the desktop. Asked for on
    AppleVis.

TurnOver 2.0, build 22

Choose a tag to compare

@Doll-Eye Doll-Eye released this 25 Oct 17:56
90d2f30

TurnOver 2.0, build 22

Changed

  • CoExist is gone: TurnOver is a full screen reader from the first launch, and one reader speaks at a time. While
TurnOver is on VoiceOver is off; Command Control Period quits TurnOver and starts it again. VoiceOver is no longer
kept running and silenced alongside it, so nothing asks for audio recording permission any more, and TurnOver's own
braille and sounds are on. Password fields and macOS's own prompts are TurnOver's to read; what you type in a
password field is still never spoken or logged. Discussion 46.
  • Screen reader behaviour: TurnOver is on or off, VoiceOver is on or off, and that is all. TurnOver reads everywhere
while it is on; no apps are labelled for either reader and nothing switches as you change apps. A new Settings
section, Screen reader behaviour, holds one switch: TurnOver and VoiceOver swap, one coming on as the other goes
off (TurnOver turns VoiceOver off as it starts and on as it quits, comes on when VoiceOver turns off and steps aside
when VoiceOver comes on). Off, each reader has its own switch and neither changes the other, for VoiceOver reading
inside a virtual machine such as Parallels. Readers per app (the lists, the modes, switching as apps change) are
folded away inside that section, off for a new install; a set-up that already uses them keeps working as it did.
  • TurnOver turns VoiceOver on by starting it, not by its keyboard shortcut, which can be changed or stop working;
and VoiceOver's own shortcut passes straight through TurnOver's keys instead of waiting on them. Command Control
Period waits for Command and Control to be let go before TurnOver quits, so VoiceOver's shortcut arrives cleanly.
  • The welcome, on a first start and after this update, presents TurnOver as a full screen reader, and names the
three keyboard styles, the menu, the Settings window and the copy of your VoiceOver settings by their keys.
  • The menu is short, in NVDA's shape: This app, Settings, Keys, Tools, Help, Support TurnOver, Quit. Every setting
now lives in the Settings window, in sections down the side: General, Speech, Keyboard, Item details, Web pages,
Documents, Screen recognition, Other apps' speech, Screen reader behaviour. Braille waits under Tools until it has
    its section.
  • Settings: voices for other languages are in the Speech section (a voice and a rate for each language with a voice
installed); the Voice list is the Mac's languages and English, Eloquence first; Steam's two switches (game speech,
and reading Big Picture) and Restart Steam are in Other apps' speech as well as under Games in the menu; the
settings keys (Command Control Comma, then S, and the style's own) open the window at the asked section; Previous
builds, under About and updates, opens the releases page for going back to an earlier build.
  • Command Control M opens the TurnOver menu in one press, in every keyboard style. Command Control Comma then M
    still works.
  • VoiceOver keys: Left and Right pressed together, which turn Quick Nav off and on, now also switch a document between
focus mode and browse mode: off is focus mode (the keys go to the page, until the focus leaves), on is browse mode.
There was no deliberate way into focus mode in this style, since TurnOver Space is VO-Space.
  • Browse mode: a letter is always a command, as in NVDA; a field is typed into after Return or Tab enters it.
  • Pressing a control on a web page now says what changed: on or off, checked or not, expanded or collapsed,
selected. A page that changes the control a moment later (Squarespace's switches take a second or two) is still
reported, with the control's name if you have moved on. VO-Space presses the control through accessibility, as
VoiceOver's VO-Space does; Enter and Space send the real key, as before, so a page that ignores one answers the
other. A menu button that ignores the accessibility press (the Claude app's More options) is opened by the keyboard.
  • Notification Centre: VO-O opens the panel and the key again closes it; the Notification Centre and Control Centre
keys find the clock wherever macOS puts it; a panel left open before TurnOver started is handled.
  • VO-Shift-L recognises the whole screen when the cursor is not on a picture, a direct recognition key in the Mac
    style.
  • The typing echo is private: typed words are never written to the log or carried in a report.

Fixed

  • VoiceOver comes back after a quit, a crash or a long hang, also when macOS says it is on but it is not running
(quit by a script, or crashed), and waking the Mac from sleep no longer toggles VoiceOver.
  • With NVDA or JAWS keys, the layer that makes Caps Lock the NVDA key where VoiceOver reads can be turned off: Settings,
Keyboard, "NVDA and JAWS keys where VoiceOver reads too" (on, as before). Off, VoiceOver's own Caps Lock keys
(VO-F7, VO-F8, VO-M) work in the apps VoiceOver reads. The old setting for it was never read.
  • The speech settings are TurnOver's own again: the rate, volume and pitch keys change TurnOver's voice only, and
TurnOver no longer reads VoiceOver's rate when it takes over. The link between the two readers' settings wasn't
    reliable.
  • TurnOver Settings: the switches in Screen reader behaviour are read with their names on Tab (the window gives a
switch its label a moment after Tab lands on it; TurnOver now waits for it); changing a switch no longer pauses
for a second and a half; Tab never lands on a control the window has thrown away when the section changes (a
contributor's change); a Settings window left open through an update is closed, since it showed TurnOver as off.
  • Safari: a page that moves the focus into an empty frame by itself (an advertisement loading) no longer takes
    TurnOver off the page.
  • VoiceOver keys: Right Arrow reads the character you just passed, as VoiceOver does, so what you hear is what
Backspace will delete. NVDA keys and JAWS keys keep reading the character after the caret, as on Windows.
  • Backspace speaks the deleted character at once, instead of after waiting for the caret (Mail's compose window held
every repeated Backspace back by a quarter of a second).
  • A list focused twice within half a second with a different row selected (Finder opening a folder) is read
each time; it was taken for the same focus and read once.
  • Braille: a Focus 5 by USB is found, and freed from VoiceOver's braille server; a message held on the display gives
way to the next command, as in NVDA (two of a contributor's changes).
  • Word's own dictionary decides what is misspelled in Word; the choice now lives in Word's app module instead of
shared code, with tests (a contributor's change).
  • The app shortcut picker offers every application once: Safari and other apps reached through a link were missing,
and some appeared twice (a contributor's change).
  • Waking the Mac no longer says TurnOver is not responding in the system's voice, several times over itself. The
watchdog took the sleep for a hang; it now knows the difference, and its warnings are said one at a time.
  • Finder: Command Down on a folder, and Command Up, are sent again if Finder ignored them. About one press in
twenty did nothing although the key reached Finder; now, if nothing has changed a third of a second later, the key
goes once more. Only for a folder, never for a file, so nothing opens twice. A symptom fix; the cause is in Finder.
  • Finder: an empty folder is read as empty, and Down Arrow in it says so. It was read as a list of four or five
items, and the arrows walked through the columns.
  • A menu item, button or link with no name of its own is named by the text it holds (GitHub Desktop's lists of
repositories and branches were nameless menu items).

TurnOver 2.0, build 21

New to try

  • TurnOver is free and open source: the code is at github.com/TurnOver-For-Mac/turnover, no tester key is needed any
more, Send feedback opens TurnOver's problem form on GitHub, and Support TurnOver in the menu opens Ko-fi.
  • Plugins are back on for everyone: the TurnOver menu, Tools, Plugins. Shared as pull requests to the plugins
repository, checked and reviewed before the library carries them.
  • TurnOver reads every app by default; VoiceOver still handles passwords and macOS's own prompts. Command Control
Shift T gives the app in front to VoiceOver, or back to TurnOver, straight away (the layer's T still does too).
  • JAWS keys (Command Control Comma, then K, until you hear "JAWS keys"): JAWS's laptop layout with Caps Lock as the
JAWS key. The reading grid (Caps U I O for lines, J K L for words, M comma period for characters, Y H N for
sentences, Control U I O for paragraphs), Caps Shift J and L for the line up to and from the cursor, Caps Z for the
virtual cursor, Caps F5 F6 F7 for the lists, Caps P and semicolon for the JAWS and PC cursors, Caps 8 and 9 to
click, Caps Control H for speech history, Caps Control V for the app's version, Caps Control F12 for the time with
seconds. During say all, Left and Right go back and on a sentence, and Page Up and Page Down change the speed for
that say all. Every other key is the Windows style's.

Fixed

  • Waking the Mac at the lock screen no longer ends in several TurnOvers speaking at once: while the Mac is asleep,
locked or just awake, a stuck voice is left to come back rather than restarted; a restart after a hang ends the
stuck copy, so there is only ever one. Reported by a tester.

  • Giving a key to a command: the list of commands stays open for the next one; Escape leaves it. Reported by a tester.

  • Command Tab doing nothing until TurnOver was turned off and on: a modifier the Mac thought was still held is
released before Command Tab passes, and the log records both states.

  • When the Mac's audio system hangs (it did for a few minutes on 20 Oct), TurnOver no longer hangs with it and
restarts over and over: the fresh voice is built off the main thread, nothing waits on the speech queue, the
device list is read on its own queue, and the log says which audio call stuck.

  • Screen recognition no longer freezes TurnOver (it could restart itself on a slow read). Reported by a tester.

  • The Windows style (NVDA, Narrator and JAWS keys): no more pauses between the pieces of what TurnOver says
("Settings submenu 3 of 9", "OK button"), as NVDA says them. The Mac style keeps VoiceOver's way. Reported by a
    tester.

TurnOver 2.0, build 20.2

Fixed

  • TurnOver restarting itself ("TurnOver's voice stopped"), most often after say all and an arrow key: the speech could
wait for ever on the Mac's audio player. It no longer can, and if speech ever does stick, a fresh voice takes over
within a few seconds instead of a restart. Reported by a tester.
  • Context menus: Right Arrow on an item with no submenu no longer closes the menu or freezes TurnOver, and Right on
Open With opens it. Reported by a tester.
  • Word: every table in a document moves by row and column, not only the first. Reported by a tester.
  • Your own keys: VoiceOver's and NVDA's commands (next paragraph, next table and the rest) are listed whatever the
keyboard style, and keys given to them work; right Option keys you set work with VoiceOver's Option Commander off.
    Reported by a tester.
  • Command Control Period switches TurnOver off and on again after an update; it had quit TurnOver instead.

Fixed

  • The Dock, status menus and Spotlight: the arrows move through them again with a TurnOver app in front (in build 20
they went to the app behind).
