The mere thought of it makes me shudder, speak not of the discomfort I’d experience were I forced to utter such sentences myself.
‘Mere possession’ can indicate lack of control, but does not say anything about whether it is my one and only possession.
That said: merely is not ideal, it’s only defense is that it has some precedence.
