Paper v0.6.0
A minimal WYSIWYG Markdown editor for the desktop.
Requires macOS 13 or newer. Universal: Apple silicon and Intel.
Paper v0.5.0
The outline panel
Press the new button in the title bar — or View → Outline, ⌘⇧O — and the headings of your document flow in over the right edge. Click one and the page goes there, with the caret in the heading; as you scroll, the entry for the section you are reading is marked. In reading mode a click navigates without waking the caret.
The panel floats over the page, so opening it never shifts the text, and it puts itself away: five seconds without scrolling, typing or a pointer over it — three once a click has taken you somewhere — and it withdraws. It is a way of getting somewhere, not another bar to manage.
A startup fix
An initialisation-order slip in 0.4.0 could stop the window's wiring partway through loading. Fixed.
Requires macOS 13 or newer. Universal: Apple silicon and Intel.
Paper v0.4.0
Open files from the terminal
paper notes.md opens the file in Paper. One that does not exist yet is created empty, so the same command starts a new note, and a file already open is raised rather than opened twice.
Install the command from Paper → Install Command Line Tool…. It goes to /usr/local/bin, which belongs to root, so macOS asks for your password; the sheet is the system's own and Paper never sees what you type. Remove it again with rm /usr/local/bin/paper.
Menu items reach a minimized window
Minimizing the only window left the menu bar in place with nothing behind it: Save, Settings, Check for Updates and the mode items did nothing at all, while still looking available. They now go to the window you were working in last.
The dock icon answers in that state too, and brings a minimized window back rather than leaving you to find it.
Requires macOS 13 or newer. Universal: Apple silicon and Intel.
Paper v0.3.0
Pasting Markdown formats it
It used to arrive as its own source. Copying out gives you Markdown too, so a heading keeps its hashes on the way to another application.
Mermaid diagrams
A ```mermaid fence is drawn in presentation and reading mode, in the app's own colours, following your theme and font. Editing keeps the fence as code — the block stays a code block in your file, so nothing changes by looking at it.
Requires macOS 13 or newer. Universal: Apple silicon and Intel.
Paper v0.2.0
Three ways to look at a document
Editing shows the syntax under the caret, presentation puts it away and keeps the keyboard, reading puts the keyboard away too. Opens in in Settings decides which one a new window starts in.
Check for Updates…
In the application menu. It asks, it reports, and it does nothing else — the only network call Paper makes, and only when you pick it.
One document, one window
Opening a file that already has a window raises that window instead of opening a second copy.
Fixes
- A menu command reached every open window, so one press of Save wrote every open document.
- Full screen collapsed the title bar, slicing the file name along the top.
Also
Reset in Settings puts everything back. The text column is wider, and keeps a margin either side at every width.
Requires macOS 13 or newer. Universal: Apple silicon and Intel.
