Drifter is built with an open source game engine called JMonekyEngine. I decided to use JME3 because I wanted to challenge myself to learn the Java programming language and I thought making a game would be the most fun way to do that.
To package the executables I wrote a custom Powershell script that uses packr (a Java utility that packs executables) to create the binaries for both platforms, although I didn't realise that I had to use a seperate JDK path for each OS. That is why the Linux executables are broken up to but not including Beta 0.2.1.
There are Three main ways to run Drifter. Using the provided Archives, and using Java and the jarfile, and compiling from source.
To Run the game from the archives, to to the releases tab here in the github repo, find the version you want (I Strongly suggest the latest version) and download the correct archive for your OS. Once downloaded, extract the archive. On windows, simply doubble click the archive and click Extract All, then choose the location and wait. On linux, navigate to the archive in a Terminal window, then run tar -xvzf Drivter-x.x.x-XXXX.tar.gz where x.x.x is version and XXXX is the branch (Beta or Alpha). Once extracted, move the created folder (Drivter-x.x.x-XXX_OS) to any other folder on your computer, this is where you want the game to live. then simply run the executable inside that folder and enjoy the game!
To use Java and the Jarfile, you need Java installed on your system. This project uses Corretto 18.0.2, which can be found HERE. Once Java is installed, go to the releases tab and download the .jar of whatever version you want make sure its the client jarfile and not the server. Open a terminal in your downloads directory (or wherever the jarfile is) and run java -jar ./Drivter-x.x.x-XXXX.jar where x.x.x is version and XXXX is the branch (Beta or Alpha).
To compile from source, Use Gradle and the provided build.gradle file. Download the source as a ZIP from github and download Gradle. Unzip the Archive and move gradlew (gradlew.bat on windows) to the project folder. Then run ./gradlew shadowJar or ./gradlew.bat shadowJar it will put a jarfile into the build/libs directory, from here follow the steps above to run it.
