Releases: Weft-Rust/Weft

Weft 26.11.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 02 Nov 00:18

Install: unpack the archive for your system anywhere and run the game. Needs a GPU with Vulkan.

  • Windows: run weft.exe.
  • Linux (x64): chmod +x Weft-*-linux-x64.AppImage, then run it. If it asks for FUSE, run it with --appimage-extract-and-run. Or the same as a folder: tar xf Weft-*-linux-x64.tar.gz, then Weft/weft. Needs your GPU's Vulkan driver.
  • macOS (Apple Silicon, macOS 12 or newer): tar xf Weft-*-macos-arm64.tar.gz, then xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine Weft, as the game is not signed by Apple, then Weft/weft. Vulkan comes with the game (MoltenVK).

Textures: the game comes with its own. If Minecraft is installed through the official launcher or Prism, Weft builds a resource pack from your copy on the first start (Settings > Resource Packs to turn it off). Nothing from Mojang is included or downloaded.

Multiplayer: pause menu > Multiplayer > Open to Friends gives a ticket; your friend pastes it into Multiplayer > Join. It also works by address, with the port forwarded, and weft --server runs a world with no window (see the README).

Mods: put a mod's .zip into the mods folder: the Mods screen has a button that opens it. Mods are native libraries and have to be built for your system and the same engine version, see the modding cheat sheet.

The mod interface and the save format can still change between versions.

Changes

Gameplay

  • Beds: respawn point, lying pose
  • Spawn eggs for every entity, including mods'
  • Advancements stay through death (#28)
  • Explosions no longer break water
  • The crosshair targets a mob in front of a block
  • Air refills in creative; swimming no longer bobs the view
  • Third person: held items like Minecraft's, the view shakes from hits and walking

Multiplayer

  • Dedicated server, console commands, op, whitelist (#19)
  • Direct connection by address (#17)

Graphics and performance

  • GPU simulated particles, rain and snow
  • Vanilla-like falling particles
  • Terrain and sky shader optimizations (#30)
  • Distant terrain fixes, from high above and from underground (#13, #23)
  • Redrawn dirt, grass, stone, ores and tall grass
  • Inventory block icons no longer squashed
  • Armor texture layout fixed

Resource packs and shaders

  • Leather items and armor take their textures from the Minecraft pack (#27)
  • Beds take their textures from the pack, in both of its layouts
  • Fixed the crash after disabling the generated resource pack (#20)
  • Shader pack fixes

Install and data

  • Releases write to per-user folders, so the game can live in a read-only location and survive updates (#32)
  • An existing run/config keeps a copy portable; --run-dir still overrides everything
  • A player's copy of a mod replaces the shipped one
  • The test mod is no longer in releases

Modding

  • .handheld() tag for items held like tools
  • Tag-based localization (see docs/localization.md)
  • Advancements go by tags, so new food and mobs count on their own
  • Mods can be switched on and off in the Mods screen, applied after a restart
  • Mods can keep marked components through death and are told about respawns
  • The base game starts with every other mod turned off

Fixes and project

  • Clipboard is cached instead of being recreated each time (#16)
  • A toast hides with the GUI on F1 and stays behind when leaving a world
  • Faster parallel test runs

What's new

Combat, swimming and the sky now work like modern Minecraft, and the world got a lot more alive.

  • Combat: attack cooldown with an indicator under the crosshair, crits, sweeps, sprint knockback
  • Advancements: 19 to earn, with toasts and a screen on L
  • Sky: new sun, moon and stars, plus clouds that reach the horizon, with a height setting
  • Weather: rain, snow and thunder, /weather
  • Movement: modern swimming and crawling, head turns before the body in third person
  • Mobs: vanilla models for cow, pig, sheep, chicken, creeper and skeleton; creepers explode, skeletons shoot
  • Multiplayer: permission levels with /op and /deop, other players' mining is visible, player list on Tab
  • Also new: timed eating, more particles, suffocation and void damage, per-liquid fog, F11 fullscreen, reworked first-person hand

Fixed: death no longer lets you heal or pick things up, removed mobs stay gone after a reload, water keeps flowing after one, no item loss when leaving with an open menu or when a chest disappears, safer saves, no more fall damage from ladders or wasted buckets, and many smaller fixes.

For modders: the sky and liquids are fully moddable, reach and mining speed are attributes, and mods can read more from the client. Mods have to be rebuilt for this version.
