Install: unpack the archive for your system anywhere and run the game. Needs a GPU with Vulkan.
- Windows: run
weft.exe. - Linux (x64):
chmod +x Weft-*-linux-x64.AppImage, then run it. If it asks for FUSE, run it with--appimage-extract-and-run. Or the same as a folder:tar xf Weft-*-linux-x64.tar.gz, thenWeft/weft. Needs your GPU's Vulkan driver. - macOS (Apple Silicon, macOS 12 or newer):
tar xf Weft-*-macos-arm64.tar.gz, thenxattr -dr com.apple.quarantine Weft, as the game is not signed by Apple, thenWeft/weft. Vulkan comes with the game (MoltenVK).
Textures: the game comes with its own. If Minecraft is installed through the official launcher or Prism, Weft builds a resource pack from your copy on the first start (Settings > Resource Packs to turn it off). Nothing from Mojang is included or downloaded.
Multiplayer: pause menu > Multiplayer > Open to Friends gives a ticket; your friend pastes it into Multiplayer > Join. It also works by address, with the port forwarded, and weft --server runs a world with no window (see the README).
Mods: put a mod's .zip into the mods folder: the Mods screen has a button that opens it. Mods are native libraries and have to be built for your system and the same engine version, see the modding cheat sheet.
The mod interface and the save format can still change between versions.
What's Changed
Redstone
- Pistons and sticky pistons move blocks as real moving bodies; slime blocks; flying machines work
- Floater: a block that moves whole structures;
- Anchor: an immovable block when powered, movable when unpowered
- Own rules: a build works the same in any direction, no quasi-connectivity, wire on floors, walls and ceilings, idle circuits cost nothing
- Guide in docs/redstone.md
Blocks and building
- Stairs, slabs and vertical slabs for every full block, including blocks from other mods
- API for different blocks sharing one cell, such as two different slabs or waterlogging
- Stairs and other model blocks collide box by box instead of as one solid shape
Gameplay
- Spiders are neutral in daylight and fight back when hit, for 20 seconds
- Being pushed no longer counts as a jump, so it costs no hunger
- Mining progress adds up on the server tick by tick
- Mob knockback follows vanilla
- /tick rate now also reaches the client: mining, use bars, swings, animated textures
- /seed command, /help shows full usage
Graphics
- Lamps show by day, and block light keeps its color in sunlight
- Sun, moon and clouds match vanilla
- Translucent blocks are sorted far to near, so they draw correctly through each other
- Smoother distant terrain
- Lights on moving bodies reach clients with no dark flash
Textures and resource packs
- Many textures redrawn
- Every CTM method now works on any block, and a tile can be a model
- A pack's block model also draws the block's item
Interface
- Chat settings screen improvements
- French translation
Modding
- Own gates and wires: signal_logic, wire, crates/sdk/src/signal.rs
- r.stairs, r.slabs, r.vertical_slabs, r.shapes_of
- neutral(|w, mob, player| ..) for mobs, ai::target for custom goals
- World seed API: seed, position_seed, cube_seed
- .not_in_world() for entities that aren't in the world
- Builder call order no longer matters
- Renamed: near_bodies to near_targets, set_look to set_appearance
- Changed: collision and selection are now one hitbox; boxes are in 1/16 everywhere; API angles are in degrees; .use_time is in seconds; - - signal_logic delay is in redstone ticks
- Large cleanup of duplicated logic between client, server and SDK, which fixed several mismatches
Releases and project
- AppImage for Linux next to the tar.gz
- Minimum Rust version raised to 1.95
- Format check in CI
- Test suite cut to the 120 tests that catch new bugs
- README mentions MINECRAFT_DIR_LOOKUP
