Brickworks 0.15.0

Choose a tag to compare

@Xaxis Xaxis released this 03 Nov 15:40

The desktop app is free, as brickworks.diy now says, and nothing in it asks
about a plan. Instructions keeps the window moving while it works out a
model's steps, where 0.14.0 held one frame there for a fifth to two fifths
of a second. A click hinge turned on a slow or busy machine stops on a click
short of what is in its way, where it could end inside its base. A model
opened while the last was still being weighed shows its own weight. When
Claude looks over a design, it hears when the model shows fewer colours than
real sets of its theme. And in German, French and Spanish more of the
Library's themes are named in the language.

Changed

  • The desktop app is free. brickworks.diy's plans and download pages have
said so since 2 November, and 0.15.0 holds no plan check at all: the paid
desktop's check at start and its screen, built for a Pro desktop and never
switched on, are gone. Signing in is as it was.
  • Instructions works out a model's steps without stopping the window. On
the example car, timed in the Linux downloads the same hour, six tries
each, the longest frame while it worked out the steps was 0.18 to 0.39 s in
0.14.0 and is 0.02 to 0.10 s in 0.15.0: the code that lays out the steps
and draws the booklet is now loaded off the window's thread the first time
it is used. Its bar comes up in the first frame after Save, as it did.
  • When Claude looks over a design (review_model, look_at_model), it hears
when the model shows fewer colours than real sets of its theme and size
show, and which colours those sets add a little of. Nothing is recoloured
    for it.
  • In German, French and Spanish the Library names every theme as the site
does: themes that are words are translated (Collectible Minifigures,
Educational and Dacta, the numbered minifigure series), and product lines
    and licences keep their names.
  • Following someone in Build together draws nothing while neither view
moves, where it drew the whole window every frame.

Fixed

  • A click hinge turned on a slow or busy machine stops on the last click
short of what is in its way. It could go through its base, or stop inside
    it between two clicks.
  • A model opened while the last one was still being weighed shows its own
weight in the status bar, where it could show the last model's verdict, or
    a weight below zero.

@Xaxis Xaxis released this 01 Nov 19:32

A release for big models and touch screens. Replacing a part across a
10,000-part model no longer stops the window: replacing all of one with a
2 x 4 held a single frame for around half a second in 0.13.0, and now its
longest frame is under a tenth of a second. Suggest sections on a model that
size is a little quicker too. A design Claude finishes in the assistant's
panel is framed whole, as Frame all frames it, where a tall one used to run
out of the top of the view. And on a touch screen, a drag begun on a text
field, a tile's "+N" or any other control in a list scrolls the list.

Changed

  • Replace on a big model keeps the window moving. On a 10,105-part model,
    replacing every part with a 2 x 4 held one frame for 0.44 to 0.75 s in
0.13.0's Linux download; in 0.14.0's its longest frame is 51 to 84 ms, nine
tries each, timed the same hour. Where each new part fits is worked out off
the window's thread, and work every edit did for nothing on a big model is
gone. The model it makes is the same, part for part.
  • Suggest sections on the same model is usually a little quicker: in three
rounds of three tries, its best took 2.2, 2.9 and 2.0 s, where 0.13.0's
took 2.7, 2.8 and 2.7 s. It suggests the same sections.

Fixed

  • A design asked for in the assistant's panel ends whole in the view,
framed as Frame all frames it, where a tall tower went up out of the top
of the window and a long wall ran off both sides. A view you turned while
Claude worked is kept, and so is one looking closely at part of the model.
  • On a touch screen, a drag begun on a text field in a list scrolls the
list: Properties, Settings, the parts search, the assistant's drawer and a
dialog's form could be scrolled only from the gaps between fields. A tap
still puts the cursor in the field, and a press held still selects its
    words. A drag begun on a tile's "+N", the parts bin's buttons, a category,
a Library card, a colour swatch or a key's chip scrolls its list too.

@Xaxis Xaxis released this 01 Nov 11:10

A release about getting to your model sooner. Brickworks now opens a second
or more sooner: the first screen loads only what it shows, and Render,
Simulate, the assistant and the other panels and dialogs are made the first
time you ask for one. On a big model, dragging See inside's cut takes a
couple of milliseconds a move instead of forty, and the next model you open
no longer waits for the last one's joints to be read. Search offers each
part once, and undo puts a part back where it stood, so a save after it is
the file you had. In German, French and Spanish, parts and colours now have
the names the LEGO Group gives them there, and search finds them by those
names; the sign-in screen, the dialogs, the Library's themes and the version
line read in the language too, with thousands grouped the way it groups them.

Added

  • Connect Claude opens Claude's Add custom connector form with Brickworks
already filled in, whichever kind of account you sign in to Claude with.
  • In German, French and Spanish a part is named whole in the language, as
the LEGO Group names it there (Brique 1×2, Fliese 1×4 mit Rille, Teja
curva 2×1), and so is a colour ("Rouge, opaque"). Search takes those
names, with or without accents: "brique 1x2" finds 3004. Prints, stickers
and minifigure pieces keep their English names.

Changed

  • The app opens sooner. On a Linux machine its first screen was there in
6.4 s, where 0.12.0 took 7.7, and its loading before that screen takes a
third less. A panel or dialog the first screen does not show is loaded the
first time you open it, and the first time Render or Simulate is used the
window says so while it loads.
  • Dragging See inside's cut on an 8,785-part model takes 1.4 to 2.9 ms a
move, where it took 44, and the window no longer stalls twice a second on
    a big model.
  • A model with parts of its own opens in about a second after a big one,
where it waited 7 to 13 seconds for the last model's joints to be read.
  • On a model too rich for the graphics card to draw quickly, the outline
under the pointer and its words in the status line wait for the pointer
to rest, so moving the mouse never waits on the drawing.
  • Asked to measure or change a model you have already built, Claude is told
to edit it part by part rather than design it again, so details you did
not ask to change stay as they are.
  • In German, French and Spanish: the sign-in screen, the dialogs and the
status line, the Library's set names and themes, Render's backdrop, a
sub-assembly's properties, and the version line in Settings and
--about. Counts in the thousands read 1.575 in German and Spanish and
    1 575 in French.

Fixed

  • Search, the palette and Claude's search_parts no longer offer a part
LDraw draws in one colour beside the part it places (303923 beside 3039
    in blue).
  • Undo puts a part back where it stood in the model, so the build steps
and a save after an undo are what they were before it.
  • A dialog's default button stands out from Cancel again.
  • Double-clicking a row's name in the model tree keeps it open to rename.
  • A clicked button's tooltip stays down until the pointer leaves it.

@Xaxis Xaxis released this 31 Oct 22:01

A release about pictures, booklets and your own language. On a graphics card
that traces rays, Best now follows the light bounce by bounce over your
model's own parts, so shadows soften as they should and light comes off the
floor and between the parts, and the car at 720p is clean in a few seconds.
A render queue draws picture after picture while you go on building. A
printed booklet can show an axle or a beam at its real size to lay on the
page, a part pulled out with an arrow back in, the step's colours, and a
sub-model finished before you build it. The whole app reads in German,
French or Spanish, chosen in Settings, and on a 10,000-part model Check
stability answers in about a second and Suggest sections in about five.

Added

  • Best is path traced on a graphics card with ray tracing: soft shadows,
light bounced off the floor and between the parts, and glass that tints
what is behind it, cleaner with every sample (Best's frames, 256 when you
leave it). Where the card cannot trace rays, Best is frames averaged as
before, and Render's Quality note says so.
  • File, Render queue…: queue the model and the view as they are now, change
either and queue another, and each is drawn in turn and saved where
Render saves while you work. Finish now keeps a path-traced picture as
clean as it is so far. Claude can use the same queue.
  • Booklets: the first step to use a straight Technic axle or beam shows it
at its real size, with its length in studs, true at 100% in the PDF and
the PNG pages. Build, Booklet page adds per step a part pulled out with a
red arrow back in, a colour guide, a 1:1 guide for the parts you choose,
and a sub-model's preview, each one Undo and saved with the model. Claude
    can set each with edit_booklet.
  • Settings, Language: English, Deutsch, Français or Español, for the
menus, tooltips, panels, the keys sheet and the first build. Parts and
colours keep their names. Find a command takes a command's words in the
language you chose as well as in English.

Changed

  • Check stability on a 10,000-part model answers in about a second, where
it took eight: it shows the weighing the status bar has already done.
  • Suggest sections on a 10,000-part model takes about five seconds, half
what it did, with the same sections, and a big model's build steps are
    worked out sooner.
  • Colour the hidden parts on a big model no longer stops to follow the
    build steps first.
  • Claude doing CAD work for you over the connector gets a CAD answer when
it places a few parts: each part's span and what holds it, with no
design method and no fresh look. A part refused for floating says where
it would stand. attachment_points answers several parts in one call, and
in_view says the colour, face and turn of the part in your hand and the
    span its ghost takes.

@Xaxis Xaxis released this 31 Oct 11:49

A release about building by hand. A part turns about any of its own axes by
rings and arrows on it, Connect puts a point on one part onto a point on
another at any angle, a number typed while you move a part moves it exactly
that far, and copies go down in a row or a ring at once. Split swaps a part
for smaller real parts and Merge does the reverse, a set's own bin follows
its booklet, and the Library opens on real sets drawn in 3D. Every tool has a
key, and Studio's, Mecabricks' or LDCad's keys come as presets, so your hands
already know it. Two people building together see each other's pointer and
pin comments to parts, a model's build plays as a video, and Claude, or
another AI on your own key, can design for you.

Added

  • Rotate puts rings on the selected part and Move puts arrows on it: turn
or slide it about its own axes, the model's or the view's, to any angle,
    in three actions.
  • Connect: a point on the part in hand onto a point on the model, at any
angle, in one undo. A pin goes in from the face you point at.
  • Type a number while moving or turning a part to move it that far.
  • Copies in a row, in a ring, or along a hose, all at once.
  • Split a part into smaller real parts, or Merge parts into one real part,
    with one key.
  • Rubber bands round pulleys and springs between holes, each laid in a few
clicks and saved as plain LDraw.
  • View, Split: a straight-on view beside the model, with its own zoom, Fit,
    box select, Connect and handles.
  • Every tool has a key. The keys sheet (F1) shows every key at once, finds
one as you type, and offers Studio's, Mecabricks' or LDCad's keys as
presets, or your own. Shift with a digit paints a favourite colour.
  • Find a command by typing (Ctrl+/ or Ctrl+Shift+P): every command, its key
and its menu, and a part's number takes that part into the hand.
  • A Make menu for the minifig builder, mosaics, Brickify, the part maker,
    prints and stickers.
  • The parts bin names every part on its tile, lists what fits the selected
part, finds parts made in a colour, folds prints away and lists as rows.
A double-click on a tile replaces the selected part or fits it.
  • A set opened from the Library brings its own bin, following its booklet
    with the step's parts first.
  • The Library opens on real sets drawn in 3D, and its search finds the set
you mean, typos and run-together words included; a theme's name alone
lists that theme's sets, newest first.
  • Build together: the other person's pointer, comments pinned to parts, and
a change made just before you quit is never lost.
  • File, Render, Building: the model built up part by part as a video (an
animated WebP and its frames, and an MP4 where ffmpeg is installed).
  • A Product look for renders: a clear coat, soft studio light and a sweep
backdrop, with clear parts showing what is behind them.
  • Drag a part to any step on the timeline; steps have keys.
  • Booklets: a page's layout copied to every later page at once, pictures
that turn, arrows that bend, boxes that snap to guides, print-quality PNG
pages and a PDF that carries its font. Claude can lay out a page.
  • Simulate says where an arm meets a wall, a linkage's range, and where a
motor stalls under its load. Measure gives the angle between two holes.
  • Meet swings the hinges between two parts until they join.
  • An axle slides through its hole to where the pointer is.
  • The reference picture is in the undo history like a part.
  • A first launch builds a first model with you, one step at a time, in place
    of a tour of cards.
  • Settings, AI: choose who designs. Claude, as before, or another AI on your
own API key: OpenAI, the Anthropic API, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, Mistral,
Groq, Together, DeepSeek, xAI, or any server that speaks OpenAI's Chat
Completions (Ollama, LM Studio, vLLM on your own computer). Pick a model
from the provider's own list, set its temperature, max output and
reasoning effort, and Test it: one tool call and one picture, and it says
plainly what works. Your key is kept on your computer in a file encrypted
to it, or for the visit only, and is never sent to us, logged or saved
    with a model.
  • Every AI streams its design, drawn brick by brick as it writes. Claude can
mirror, split, merge and measure in one call each.
  • Help, Send feedback…: tell us something is wrong, an idea or a question.
A picture of the window goes with it, which you can remove, and, if you
tick them, the version and your system, the model you have open and the
app's last log lines, each of which you can read first. Signed in, your
reports and our answers are on your settings page.
  • For beta testers, Help, Beta hub: what is new to try, what we know is
wrong, and the early features your account has.
  • The LDraw library on the website, at brickworks.diy/library: every set the
app's Library opens, each with a page of its own and Open in Brickworks.

Changed

  • The parts bin and Properties each have a column of their own, and on a
laptop the model keeps at least 60% of the window, the two taking turns
where both do not fit. Hose, Simulate, Motions, Stress and hidden colours
stand beside the model, never over it.
  • Each command lives in one menu, and the part menu holds what is done to a
part. No menu is taller than a laptop's window.
  • On a 10,000-part model, select joined, paste, duplicate and replace answer
within a second, and hidden colours in under two.
  • The design checks take half the time they did, so a session builds
sooner, and a call through the connector answers in half the time.
  • The app carries the Brickworks mark, and it opens the app's menu.
  • Help, About credits everyone whose work is in Brickworks.

Fixed

  • A side cut to three studs by a mirror plane keeps its panels.
  • A rubber band whose pieces were stripped from its file opens whole.
  • Choosing a row of another sub-model in the model tree no longer crashes
    the app.
  • Every key the app names in a hint is the key your keys give it.

@Xaxis Xaxis released this 28 Oct 16:40

A release about a second look. When Claude designs something new, a fresh
pair of eyes now looks at it before it is finished: a Claude session that
never saw the designing is shown three pictures and the person's whole
request, and says what reads as a generic box and the three changes a set
designer would make first. Judged against the same designs without it,
designs with it were preferred in two of every three verdicts. Parts with
studs on their sides are no longer read as wider than they are, and the
Tested mark judges a build by its own parts and its own joints.

Added

  • A fresh pair of eyes at a new design's first save. Claude Code, started
on its own and shown only the request and three pictures of the model,
names what makes it read as the subject, what reads as a generic box,
and the three biggest changes; the designing chat makes them. Where no
Claude Code runs, the chat is shown the same pictures and asked the same
question, and answers it before it builds on.
  • The fresh eyes judge by the person's whole request, in their own words,
and never ask to take away anything it names.
  • Every lot on a model's Parts tab shows its own part, drawn by Brickworks.

Changed

  • A chat through the connector hears the model's sizes once for itself,
    not once for every tab.
  • A step's parts are counted as a booklet shows them, and a side build
    counts as one step.

Fixed

  • Claude Code is found where its installer puts it, so an app started from
a desktop icon can use it.
  • A part with studs on its side (87087, 4733, 30414) is no longer taken
for a wider one: a shape built beside it is told when it would float,
and its foot is laid in plates.
  • The Tested mark: a build that tips is let settle and fails only where a
joint gives; a part is judged by its own shape, never another's moved
out of place; chains are held by their sprockets; and real sets'
booklets, colours and joints pass it.
  • Rename or delete stays in reach however many models are saved.
  • On a phone, Build it comes up where it stays, so a finger never lands
    on the timeline.

@Xaxis Xaxis released this 28 Oct 10:47

A release about the app's own face, and about counting and finding what a
model is made of. Every dialog, menu and button wears the app's dark look
and can be seen on it, and a file chooser opens where you would look. A
model has one part count, the pieces a builder takes out of the box, and
Stress weighs a Technic model's pins and axles, the Cat D11 in seconds.
Search finds a technique by its words and a part by its number, and a
photo's part comes in its colour. Claude lays real pieces that do the job,
where the model can hold them, and Instructions saves a PDF.

Added

  • Instructions saves a PDF beside the booklet's page, every step and the
parts list in it, ready to print or send.
  • The app starts on its own mark, not the engine's.
  • Stress weighs pins and axles, so a Technic model's joints are weighed
too: an axle keyed in its hole, or pins on two lines, hold square, and a
lone line of pins turns unless their friction holds it. On the Cat D11
it weighs 146 joints, 125 of them pins or axles, in seconds; it took 47
    to list 14 studs.

Changed

  • Every dialog and menu wears the app's own dark face, the engine's own
questions among them (a new folder, overwriting a file).
  • A file chooser opens where you would look: where that kind of file came
from last, else Pictures for a picture, Documents for a model and
Downloads for a mesh to brickify or a shopping list. Never the folder the
    app is installed in.
  • Every button can be seen on the dark face, edged in the tick boxes'
outline, and a question's default is the strong blue with white words.
Read off the pixels, 307 of 653 buttons fell short before; none do now.
  • A model's part count is the pieces a builder takes out of the box, and
every place that counts says the same: the model tree, the viewer, the
steps bar and the toast. The Cat D11 is 3,868, where some said 6,793 for
its motors' cables drawn in segments.
  • Techniques are found by their words, best first, and titled as words:
"stairs" finds stairs, and "door" leads with doors.
  • A part number finds the part it numbers: 3648 is the gear, not a torso
    printed "Set 3648".
  • A photo's part comes in the photo's colour when Brickognize is sure of
it, and the line says which.
  • Every tooltip stays inside the window, a long one in lines.
  • Claude's feature pass offers only a piece that is the feature, sized to
fit the model (a tail light gets a clear part), and lays a real set's
piece where the model can hold it, finding the hold itself. A scene or a
building stands on its own plates, not on a baseplate the brief's size.
  • A Claude using the connector hears how to work once a sitting, as Claude
Code does, and begins each design with its subject.
  • A returning person sees their last model at once, and is signed in
    behind it.
  • Build together: someone who joins sees the model from the owner's view,
people go by the names on their profiles, and the panel keeps its size as
    the chat grows.
  • A minifigure holds what it is given in its hand, the right way round and
clear of its own body, and says so when a part has nothing a hand can hold.
  • A model's moves are named only where something really moves that way: a
castle's drawbridge is no crane's boom.

Fixed

  • Edit › Select by › Part number or name selects the parts it lists inside
sub-models too; on a big Technic set it found them and selected none.
  • The first design Claude makes on a new account is a model of its own,
not built into the example car.
  • A save made by hand is never refused by the benchmark's piece count.
  • The detail pass puts a door in its wall and at the wall's height, and a
window in the wall rather than on the ground beside it.
  • An edit says how many bricks it made again when the request named no
    count.

@Xaxis Xaxis released this 28 Oct 10:40

A release about building with others, and by any hand. Build together puts
two people on one model at once, live, each with their own undo. The app
works with a screen reader and the keyboard alone, and on a tablet by touch.
Finding a part is quicker and surer: search ranks parts by how much real
sets use them and answers to BrickLink's and Rebrickable's names and the
element numbers printed in instructions, a photo of a part finds it, and
the parts bin holds the worked constructions the assistant knows. A booklet
saves itself as a PDF, and Sign in with orangecheck works on the desktop.

Added

  • The parts bin has a Techniques tab: 91 worked constructions, such as a
window in a wall, a round tower or a smooth diagonal, each with why it
works. Choose one and it is in hand whole; R turns it, a click puts it
down, and one Undo takes it back.
  • A camera in the parts search finds a part from a photo, through
Brickognize. The app says before the first photo that it goes to them.
  • Search ranks parts by how much real sets use them, so "door frame" finds
the frame in hundreds of sets first, and folds prints and stickers under
their part's tile behind a count. It answers to BrickLink's and
Rebrickable's names ("Technic, Liftarm Thick 1 x 5"), Technic words, and
the element numbers printed in instructions, which bring the part in
    their colour.
  • The booklet saves itself as a PDF, or as PNG pages, from its own bar,
beside Print. The Wizard's Tower's 590 pages make a 40 MB PDF in seven
    seconds.
  • On a tablet, Brickworks is built by touch: the phone's layout laid wide,
every target a finger's size, turned either way round.
  • Sign in with orangecheck on the desktop: its button opens orangecheck in
your browser, and the app is signed in when you come back.
  • Brickworks works with a screen reader on the desktop. Every button, part,
colour and field says its name ("Select, V", "Brick 2 x 4, 3001"), and
what the status line says is read out. F6 (or Tab, with a screen reader
    running) goes from the model into the toolbar, the parts and the colours;
Return takes a part, and Return again puts it down where the middle of the
view is. Settings has Interface size
(85 to 150%) and Reduce motion.
  • On brickworks.diy, a public collection can be followed: its page leads
with a cover of its models' pictures, Follow and how many follow it, and
what is put in it shows in the follower's feed. A model's page says how
many collections it is in, each a card a click away. Share on a model's
page opens a sheet with its link and the code to embed it, each with
Copy, and the embed is drawn in the light or dark its viewer chose.
  • Build together: File › Build together… gives a link to the model, and
whoever opens it, signed in, builds it with you at the same time, in a
browser or the desktop app. Each of you sees the other's parts go down,
move, change colour and come off as it happens, and who is here. Undo
takes back only your own changes. Two people moving one part at once
both see it end in the same place, and the one whose move was overtaken
is told. Everything the model is goes too: its name, the floor, motions,
build steps, the booklet's looks, the colours of hidden parts, and parts
printed or made in the app. Each person's pointer shows in the others'
view with their name, and the panel has a short chat for people 13 and
over. A reload or a lost connection goes back into the session by
itself. A Claude connected to one person's tab builds for everyone. The
owner ends the session; the model stays theirs.

Changed

  • A first visit to brickworks.diy/app downloads half as much before the
parts bin is usable: 17 MB where it was 31. The engine and its pack are
sent compressed harder, the pack leaves out the developers' own scripts
and carries only the parts the first screen draws, and the rest of the
parts come in one piece while the app starts.

Fixed

  • After a menu or the snap chooser was used with the mouse, the arrow keys
stopped moving the selection: the keys stayed with the menu's button.
They go back to the model when the menu closes.
  • A model Claude had worked on, saved as one file with sub-models, came
back from the autosave without its name.
  • A step edit on a big model with its own steps is quick: on the Wizard's
Tower it takes a fifth of a second where it took up to four.
  • A rare script error in the stability and section workers, seen under a
heavy load, is gone: what a worker reads is now locked.
  • Saving, exporting or moving parts between steps on a big model with its
own steps says so on the status bar before the app is held, as it does on
any other big model. The Wizard's Tower's Save held the window for up to a
second, and a step edit for up to three, with nothing said.
  • When Claude asks for a change that changes nothing, such as painting a
part the colour it already is, or one its part was never made in, the
answer says nothing changed and why, instead of "Done" with an empty
    list of changes.
  • On brickworks.diy, /challenges goes to the challenge page instead of
"not found", and every page's footer links the challenge.
  • The sign-in screen says your models are kept with your account as well
as on the device, as they have been since 2026-10-23. It said they were
not kept with your account, and so did the FAQ and the privacy page.
  • Signed in on a new browser, a phone or a fresh install, Brickworks opens
on the model you saved last instead of the example car. A first visit, and
an account with no models yet, still start on the example car.
  • After Claude works on a model over the connector, nothing of its is left
in your hand and the view shows the whole model. A print Claude made was
left in hand, so the first click put down a stray part, and the view was
still framed on the empty baseplate the design began on. A view you turned
while Claude worked is left as you turned it.
  • The words in an SVG print. A sign, a menu board or a name plate drawn
with SVG text, by a person or by Claude, printed without its words: the
app's SVG renderer draws no text. Its words are now set in the app's font
and drawn as outlines, with their size, weight, colour and alignment. Text
that cannot be drawn is refused with why, and a picture with nothing in it
is refused rather than said to be printed.
  • Putting a part down never moves the rest of the model. A part that
reaches below the floor, a gear on an axle in a Technic brick on the
baseplate or a car's wheel under its chassis, goes where its ghost shows,
and the status line says how far below the floor it reaches. The model
used to rise to stand on it, lifting the build off the baseplate, and two
gears put down there could not then be turned by hand.
