Nova 2.0 is the first release you can install without Nix. On x86_64 Linux:

curl -LsSf https://nova.yazelix.com/install | sh

The installer checks every download against the release's checksums and
prints how to start. Nix and Home Manager installs work as before.

New since 1.0

  • Install: Nix-free install on x86_64 Linux, and full macOS support on
    Apple Silicon through Nix.
  • Much faster (measured on Linux):
    • Switching tabs updates the top bar in about 45 ms instead of over 100 ms.
    • A new tab's top bar and Radar sidebar appear in about 0.2 s instead of
      0.5 s.
    • Each Zellij mode change, such as entering pane mode, used to cost Radar
      and the top bar about 120 ms of CPU decoding the full keymap. It now costs
      under 2 ms.
    • A fresh terminal starts 14% faster.
    • Every tab shares one Radar, so opening more tabs does not multiply its
      work.
  • Upstreamed to Zellij: Nova no longer needs its own Zellij fork.
    Zellij's maintainer merged the fork's changes into Zellij itself, most of
    them Lucca's fixes (#5630). Nova now runs upstream Zellij with
    two small patches, and every Zellij user gets:
    • Sixel and Kitty image fixes, and stacked panes that keep their order.
    • Swap layouts applied by name, and double, heavy and dashed pane borders.
    • Lucca's follow-up fixes: #5631, #5687, which keeps
      pane order when a tiled layout is reapplied, and #5706, which
      delivers startup events to background plugins.
  • Terminal: Nova Rio, a pinned Rio fork, replaces Mars.
  • Radar sidebar: tabs, panes, and running agents and jobs at a glance.
    yzx radar-setup connects Codex.
  • Workspace keys:
    • New tabs open in a zoxide search of your recent folders.
    • Alt Shift T and Alt Shift W create and close tabs.
    • Alt j and Alt k cycle through panes.
    • Ctrl Alt h/j/k/l move the focused pane.
    • The command menu's layout entry switches between stacked and split
      panes.
    • Alt Shift B hides or shows the bottom hints.
  • Top bar: before, it showed at most six tabs, however wide the window.
    Now it shows every tab that fits. When tabs need more room, the widgets on
    the right hide one at a time and come back when space frees up. New quota
    widgets show your Codex and Claude usage limits.
  • Anima: yzx anima adds Aquarium, Matrix, Physarum, Chladni, Friends and
    Enemies, and more.
  • Tools: Ratconfig edits Rio settings, yzx doctor and yzx status gain
    JSON output, and every shell keeps Atuin history.

Since 1.5

  • yzx doctor and the installer warn when another yzx comes first on
    PATH, and say how to put this one first.
  • The installer prints a short summary: progress, then how to start, learn
    and get help. install.sh --help prints the provenance check.
  • Helix's Alt r reveal no longer reports openedinvalid_payload.
  • The command menu closes after an entry instead of holding at
    [EXIT CODE: 0].

Source, notices and rebuild instructions

Nova 2.0.0 source and notice review assets

Revision: 56c97c823234fc9add9c26627fc9b2de15237a4b. Tag: nova-v2.0.0. The annotated tag records the maintainer's approval in RELEASE-APPROVAL.json.

The runtime archive is unchanged. The associated component source kit preserves full selected source/vendor trees, original notices, patches and Nix/Nova recipes. Its SOURCE-MANIFEST.json maps component derivations to those materials and hashes their files. Original notices inside source archives remain inside those archives; the language-runtime packet supplements them. License declarations retain their original scopes; this kit grants no replacement license.

Verify SHA256SUMS before extraction. Concatenate the following parts in this order; verify the reconstructed archive's size and SHA-256 against nova-release.json:

Build and replacement instructions

Build the recorded revision on x86_64 Linux with Nix (required for building, not running):

The pinned flake.lock selects build inputs; Nix may fetch those inputs and toolchains. The extracted SOURCE-MANIFEST.json records the Nova recipe root in build_graph[archive_derivation].env.novaSourceRoot; that root is under sources/. Component materials, original patches and complete vendor trees are mapped by components[].materials. The recorded graph retains build flags and recipes. To modify the build, edit a private copy of the selected source and its Nix recipe.

For a dynamic-library replacement test, use a private runtime copy. Match the library's lib/native provider with share/yazelix/archive-origins.txt and the source manifest, build an ABI-compatible replacement and replace the library at the same relative path, retaining its SONAME and loader links. Exercise it through that copy's bin/yzx. Static or embedded changes require rebuilding their consuming program. These steps do not establish that every applicable replacement/relink obligation is satisfied.

The maintainer's source/build, notice and replacement/relink review is recorded in RELEASE-APPROVAL.json. Local checksums are not GitHub OIDC provenance or an immutable-release guarantee.

Maintainer source and notice review

Reviewed for Nova 2.0.0 at revision 56c97c8 (x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, no-Rio). Approved by the maintainer, Lucca Huguet, 2026-11-01.

Reviewed files: the Portable Release dry run https://github.com/Yazelix/nova/actions/runs/41336600930 on main. SHA256SUMS verifies all seven assets, and nova-release.json's records and the reconstructed source archive match their bytes; GitHub build provenance verifies all eight files with the run's Sigstore bundle against the workflow, refs/heads/main and the revision above. Sizes: runtime 481,811,491 bytes, complete source kit 3,341,938,143 bytes in two ordered parts, language-runtime notices 980,816 bytes. Against Nova 1.5.0 the runtime is 9,653 bytes smaller and the source kit 51,326 bytes larger; the notice packet is 9 bytes smaller with byte-identical notice files. All three are within 0.002%.

Installed artifact: the same workflow installed these exact runtime bytes and ran checks/linux-archive.sh in an unprivileged, read-only Ubuntu 24.04 container without Nix or the checkout, and it passed; the same check passed again locally on the downloaded runtime in the same pinned image. The extracted archive passes packaging/archive_metadata.py --release; its package.json and runtime_identity.json name version 2.0.0 on the stable channel, and bin/yzx --version prints 2.0.0 in an empty environment. The 2.0.0 Edge Nix package built from this revision was installed on 2026-10-23 and dogfooded from the Yazelix Nova (Edge) desktop entry, including both 2.0 popup fixes (Helix Alt r reveal and command-menu entries).

Source coverage: 651 component records and 1,949 complete source roots; all 136 runtime origins have captured owners or roots, and every component's materials are in the kit. The 121 native library providers below (123 runtime origins) use exactly the same origins and original source materials as Nova 1.5.0, with unchanged FFmpeg configuration flags. Since 1.5.0 only seven source roots changed, all Nova's own or its Zellij patch: Nova's recipe tree (the 21 files of the 2.0 range), the default Zellij config.kdl, yzx-menu.rs, the generated yzx-tutor source (src/main.rs), the Zellij distribution recipe (adding zellij-pipe-payload.patch and its README note), and its patched vendor tree, where only zellij-client-0.46.0/src/cli_client.rs differs; that tree's 838 notice files are byte-identical to 1.5.0's. The full Zellij source tree is unchanged and keeps its MIT LICENSE.md. Grammar sources are unchanged. The language-runtime packet carries the same 89 original Rust and Go notices from 9 archives, including Go PATENTS.

The runtime includes these native library providers. Their original copyright notices and applicable license texts are supplied in the associated complete component source kit at the mapped materials; original scopes and alternative grants remain authoritative. This list records provider use and material association, not a new or replacement license.

The packaged FFmpeg 8.1 is configured with --enable-gpl, --enable-version3 and --disable-nonfree. Its original LICENSE.md and COPYING.GPLv3 are in the source kit; default LGPL claims do not describe this build. FFmpeg uses LAME 3.100, covered by the GNU Library General Public License in lame-3.100/COPYING (the engine header in libmp3lame/lame.c permits version 2 or later); its README and LICENSE are preserved. A same-recipe LAME dynamic replacement was verified against these same LAME materials while preparing the cd09cab packet.

CodexBar 0.74.1 ships as upstream's prebuilt static binary (libexec/yazelix/codexbar). Its MIT license (Peter Steinberger) ships in the runtime at share/licenses/codexbar/LICENSE; the source kit carries the release archive and CodexBar's full source tree with that LICENSE.

Pinned children: the full zjstatus (Yazelix/zjstatus 0a4ba3e6e46b7795d1226000858d7bc2d6973710), zj-radar and Zellij source trees in the kit retain the MIT notices that their filtered compilation inputs omit. The complete tree-sitter-bash source retains its original MIT notice. Scoped Groovy, Hyprlang, ADL, SuperCollider, EEx, PTX and LPF grammar declarations remain authoritative; later canonical texts do not substitute grants. Cargo OR grants remain alternatives.

Installer: the install.sh asset (12,327 bytes, SHA-256 a3d2924760c811a337b70180d8d29e6b448517308ddf6a85c6587af407eb1987) is byte-identical to packaging/install.sh at the revision above and is recorded under installer in nova-release.json. It is Nova's own script and bundles no third-party component.

SOURCE-DELIVERY.md gives the exact-revision Nix build command, the preserved recipes and the component build-flag mapping. Its private-copy replacement guidance applies to ABI-compatible dynamic libraries; static or embedded components require rebuilding their consumer. This review is technical association and maintainer acceptance, not blanket legal clearance or an independent offline rebuild of every source.
