Working Knowledge Layer Toolkit 1.2.0
Create compatibility layer mods for Working Knowledge.
The Working Knowledge Layer Toolkit helps Space Engineers players and mod authors connect custom block mods to the Working Knowledge progression system. It scans installed block mods, lets you organize their blocks into schematic groups, and generates a complete layer mod ready for validation and in-game testing.
What's New In 1.2.0
- Choose from the complete catalog of active Working Knowledge schematic groups, including all Prototech families.
- Assign catwalks, stairs, ladders, ramps, railings, and similar personnel-access structures to the new Industrial Access group.
- Use clearer group-selection guidance that keeps trusses and framework under Industrial Structure while placing walkable access structures under Industrial Access.
- Rely on stronger release validation that verifies every built-in group name and tier against Working Knowledge before packaging.
- Get a cleaner downloadable archive containing only the standalone Toolkit files; repository-only test fixtures are no longer included.
- Continue creating namespaced custom schematic groups and remapping blocks already covered by Working Knowledge.
- Preview layer conflicts, priority winners, skipped claims, and safe fallbacks before testing in-game.
What It Does
- Scans local or Steam Workshop Space Engineers mods.
- Finds public block definitions while skipping hidden support blocks.
- Identifies new blocks and blocks already covered by Working Knowledge.
- Looks up friendly Steam Workshop names when possible, with offline fallbacks.
- Lets you assign a default schematic group and change individual outliers.
- Supports the complete built-in group catalog and stable, namespaced custom groups.
- Generates:
modinfo.sbcData/ResearchBlocks.sbcData/WorkingKnowledge/block_mappings.txt- Custom-group metadata and game definitions when required
- README, changelog, and Workshop-description starter files
- Includes a standalone validator, complete example layer, format references, troubleshooting guide, and publishing checklist.
Intended Use
Use this toolkit when you want blocks from another mod to participate in:
- Working Knowledge research gates and schematic unlocks
- Proficiency progression
- Data Fragment and exact Data Schematic rewards
- Welding and repair restrictions
- Grinding and salvage behavior
- Working Knowledge HUD, LCD, Pedestal, and administrative audit displays
Quick Start
Download and unzip WorkingKnowledgeLayerToolkit-1.2.0.zip, then run:
.\Start.ps1Or double-click:
Start.bat
The toolkit does not need to be installed or placed inside the Beneath the Crust repository. Windows PowerShell 5.1 is required. An internet connection is optional and is used only for Steam Workshop name lookups.
Mod Priority
Use this normal in-game Active Mods order, shown top to bottom with highest priority first:
- The generated Working Knowledge layer
- The source block mod
- Working Knowledge
When two layers map the same block, place the layer you want to win higher in the normal Active Mods list.
Validate And Test
After editing a generated layer, run from the toolkit folder:
.\Validate.ps1 -LayerPath "C:\Path\To\YourLayer"Before publishing a layer, test it in a fresh world and run:
/wk admin audit
The offline validator checks layer files, custom-group wiring, and predicted priority winners. The in-game audit confirms the actual loaded blocks, definitions, and mod order.
Important For Published Layers
Custom schematic group IDs and generated definition subtypes are persistent compatibility contracts. Choose stable, namespaced IDs and do not rename them after publishing.
Workshop layer authors should set both Working Knowledge and the supported source block mod as requirements.
Working Knowledge Layer Toolkit 1.1.0
Create compatibility layer mods for Working Knowledge.
The Working Knowledge Layer Toolkit helps Space Engineers players and mod authors connect custom block mods to the Working Knowledge progression system. It scans installed block mods, lets you organize their blocks into schematic groups, and generates a complete layer mod ready for validation and in-game testing.
What's New In 1.1.0
- Create entirely new custom schematic groups for technology that does not fit the built-in categories.
- Generate all definitions required by custom groups, including tiered Data Fragment support, hidden research unlockers, and durable exact Data Schematic consumables.
- Remap blocks already covered by Working Knowledge, making it possible to reorganize built-in or previously supported technology.
- Resolve conflicting layers by priority, with the highest-priority valid assignment winning and invalid claims falling back safely.
- Validate multiple layers together to preview mapping winners, group redefinitions, collisions, skipped claims, and fallbacks.
- Use clearer numbered menus for block selection and outlier handling.
- Hide already-covered block sets during normal selection while providing an advanced option to show them for intentional remapping.
- Generate improved README, changelog, Workshop-description, testing, and publishing guidance for each layer.
- Run built-in generator checks and automatic validation before generation completes.

Working Knowledge Layer Toolkit 1.0.0
Create compatibility layer mods for Working Knowledge.
This toolkit helps Space Engineers mod users and authors connect custom block mods to the Working Knowledge progression system. It scans block mods, finds supported custom block definitions, lets you assign them to schematic groups, and generates a ready-to-test layer mod.
What It Does
- Scans local or Steam Workshop Space Engineers mods
- Finds new public block definitions
- Skips vanilla blocks and blocks already covered by Working Knowledge
- Looks up Steam Workshop names when possible
- Lets you choose default schematic groups and override outliers
- Generates:
modinfo.sbcData/ResearchBlocks.sbcData/WorkingKnowledge/block_mappings.txt- README and publishing starter files
Intended Use
Use this if you want a custom block mod to participate in:
- Working Knowledge research gates
- schematic unlocks
- Proficiency
- welding, repair, grinding, and salvage behavior
Quick Start
Download and unzip the toolkit, then run:
.\Start.ps1Or double-click:
Start.bat
The generated layer should be loaded after both required mods:
- Working Knowledge
- The source block mod
- The generated Working Knowledge Layer mod
