LeanDoc 0.2.0
LeanDoc for Android 0.2.0 looks and works like the other Lean Apps, with
LeanMark's five themes and a settings sheet. It is a pre-release; on Google
Play the app is in a closed test.
Added
- Five themes: System, Light, Dark, Dim and Dusk, with LeanMark's colours.
Dim and Dusk are softer dark themes for long reading. The theme button
shows a dot in the theme's colour, and its name says the theme, for
example "Theme: System (Dark)". - A settings button that opens a sheet with the theme, the view, the page
colour and the zoom. - The page colour: white like paper (as before), or the theme's colours.
LeanDoc remembers the choice. - On a phone the outline opens as a sheet from the bottom edge, with the
section you are reading marked and kept in view. Before, a phone in
portrait had no outline. In landscape the outline pane returns. - Back closes an open sheet before it closes the app.
Fixed
- When the system switched between light and dark while a document was
open, LeanDoc read the file again and lost your place. It now keeps the
document and the place, and only the colours of System change: on the
emulator 0.3 to 0.4 s to the new colours, against 2.8 to 3.4 s. - After a long jump through the document the outline marked a section
several entries away. - The download from Google Play to an arm64 phone is about 541 KB instead
of 735 KB, and the APK on GitHub is 1.5 MB instead of 3.4 MB. - The app no longer keeps a second copy of the open document: about 24 MB
less memory for a 22.5 MB document full of photos. - From LeanDoc desktop: Find waits for a pause in typing, zoom steps are
laid out once, and switching back to a view reuses the parsed document.
Measured
On an API 34 emulator without a GPU, release builds. Start time, scrolling
and memory on a real phone were not measured; the phone test is in
PROGRESS.md.
Known gaps
- On Android System WebView older than 128 the outline's marked section can
move on later than the heading passes. - The keyboard shortcut list of the desktop is not shown; a hardware
keyboard's shortcuts still work.
LeanDoc 0.1.2
LeanDoc for Android 0.1.2. The first GitHub release signed with a stable release key.
On Google Play this app is in a closed test. To join: https://abooodbah.github.io/leandoc-android/
What changed
- The APK is signed with a release key that stays the same from now on, so later versions install as updates.
- If you installed 0.1.0 or 0.1.1 from GitHub, uninstall it once before installing this one. Those were signed with a throwaway test key. Google Play installs are not affected.
- The app itself is unchanged. Still no permissions and no network.
Files
Each file has a .sha256 next to it. LeanDoc-0.1.2.apk is the build to install. Its signing certificate SHA-256 is 07:CD:84:19:C6:2C:F7:81:1B:02:2E:A7:08:2B:93:07:78:27:68:33:49:77:1D:BC:2E:E5:7A:02:DE:73:50:2D.
LeanDoc 0.1.1
LeanDoc for Android 0.1.1. Pages now fit the phone's width, and the controls take less room.
Not on Google Play yet. This build is for testing on a phone.
What changed
- A Letter or A4 page now fits the screen width when a document opens (about 44% zoom on a 412 dp phone). Before, the right edge was cut off until you zoomed out. The zoom buttons enlarge the text.
- On a phone the theme, other-app and Open buttons move up beside the file name, so the controls take two rows at 360, 412 and 640 dp, and three on a very small 320 dp screen.
Measured on an API 34 emulator (no GPU)
- APK: 876 bytes larger than 0.1.0.
- Memory after a 300-page document: up 0.3%.
- That 300-page document took 22% longer to draw (10.1 s against 8.3 s, median of 3). The extra time comes from the lower zoom: at 44% more of the document is drawn on the first screen. With the old 50% floor it draws as fast as 0.1.0. The emulator has no GPU, so the gap on a phone may be much smaller; the phone test will show it.
Known gaps
- Text at the fitted zoom is small on a phone; use the zoom buttons.
- Images and documents linked from outside the file are not shown, by design.
- This build is signed with a throwaway test key that changes every build: uninstall before installing a newer one.
Files
Each file has a .sha256 next to it. LeanDoc-0.1.1.apk is the build to install.
LeanDoc 0.1.0
LeanDoc for Android, first pre-release. A read-only viewer for Word documents (.docx, .dotx, .docm, .dotm) that opens files from your file manager, email or browser, without Office.
Not on Google Play yet. This build is for testing on a phone.
What works
- Open with: Word documents from any app (view and share), plus an open button.
- The desktop LeanDoc 0.1.4 reader, so pages look the same as on Windows, Linux and macOS.
- Every document is checked and cleaned first by the desktop core: macros, ActiveX, OLE objects, external links, remote templates and images, embedded fonts and comments are removed, and tracked changes are accepted.
- Old .doc files get a clear message and can be sent to another app.
- No permissions and no network.
Measured on an API 34 emulator (no GPU)
- Download from Play to an arm64 phone: about 0.7 MB (1.5 MB installed).
- Start: 229 ms over an empty app to the first frame.
- Memory after a 300-page document: about 153 MB including the WebView renderer.
The emulator has no GPU, so start time and scrolling still need a real phone; the steps are in PROGRESS.md under "Phone test".
Known gaps
- At the default zoom a Letter or A4 page is slightly wider than a phone screen, so the right edge is cut until you zoom out. Fit-to-width is not done yet.
- The toolbar wraps to three rows on a phone.
- Images and documents linked from outside the file are not shown, by design.
- This build is signed with a throwaway test key that changes every build: uninstall before installing a newer one.
Files
Each file has a .sha256 next to it. LeanDoc-0.1.0.apk is the build to install and time; the debug APK, the empty app and the phone-test files are for the phone test.
