LeanRows for Android 0.2.0 sorts a whole file by any column, as desktop
LeanRows 0.4.0 does, and has LeanMark's five themes and a settings sheet.

Not on Google Play yet. This build is for testing on a phone.

Sorting

  • Tap a column title to sort the whole file by it. Tap it again to reverse
the order. The sorted column shows an arrow.
  • Long-press a title for text or numeric order. Tap Row to go back to the
file's own order. The More menu (⋮) has the same commands and Sort by
    column.
  • Text order compares the field's bytes, case sensitively. Numeric order
compares integers, decimals and exponents exactly. Numbers come first,
then text, then empty values, in both directions. Equal values keep the
    file's order.
  • Rows keep their own numbers from the file. Find and Go to row use them.
  • Cancel, next to the progress, stops a sort and keeps the view you had.
  • A sort uses at most about 8 MB of memory. Its temporary files go in the
app's cache and are removed as soon as they are no longer needed, also if
the app is closed. A sort that would not fit in the free space is refused
before it starts, with a message that says how much it needs.
  • Excel sheets are not sorted yet; the app says so.

Themes and settings

  • Five themes: System, Light, Dark, Dim and Dusk, with LeanMark's colours.
  • The theme button shows the theme as a coloured dot and names it when you
press and hold it. A tap moves to the next theme.
  • The settings button opens a sheet with the theme and the zoom of the
table, from 50% to 300%. Zoom enlarges the table only.
  • Both are remembered.
  • Go to row moved to the More menu.

Faster and smaller

  • Find previous reads the file about once. It read the same file many
    times over before.
  • Switching the phone between light and dark no longer opens the file
    again; you keep your place.
  • The APK is smaller: Kotlin metadata files and other languages' strings
from a library are left out.

Still no permissions and no network.

LeanRows for Android 0.1.2. The first GitHub release signed with a stable release key.

On Google Play this app is in a closed test. To join: https://abooodbah.github.io/leanrows-android/

What changed

  • The APK is signed with a release key that stays the same from now on, so later versions install as updates.
  • If you installed 0.1.0 or 0.1.1 from GitHub, uninstall it once before installing this one. Those were signed with a throwaway test key. Google Play installs are not affected.
  • The app itself is unchanged. Still no permissions and no network.

Files

Each file has a .sha256 next to it. LeanRows-0.1.2.apk is the build to install. Its signing certificate SHA-256 is 64:5D:AA:58:1D:F1:AF:33:29:9B:8B:51:E4:6A:D2:2E:1D:E3:12:E9:16:78:29:A3:3A:9D:32:96:E5:6E:AD:9C.

LeanRows for Android 0.1.1. Opens Excel .xlsx workbooks, read-only.

Not on Google Play yet. This build is for testing on a phone.

What changed

  • Open .xlsx workbooks from any app or with the open button. The first visible sheet opens with columns A, B, C; a Sheet button lists the other visible sheets.
  • Cells show text, formula results as saved, true and false, errors, and dates and times (2026-01-01, 2026-01-01 06:30:15, 06:30:00). Other numbers are shown as stored. Nothing is calculated.
  • Damaged or hostile files are refused with a message that names the limit, including oversized "zip bomb" files.
  • No new library and still no permissions or network.

Measured on an API 34 emulator (no GPU, median of 3)

  • A 100,000-row sheet: 3.1 s to prepare, rows on screen 3.7 s after a cold start (a CSV file of the same size: 1.1 s).
  • APK: 13 KB larger than 0.1.0. Memory with CSV files did not change.
  • Start with a CSV file was about 40 ms later; not yet checked whether that is real or noise.

Known gaps

  • A sheet is prepared in full before any row is shown.
  • .xls, .xlsm and .xlsb are not supported. Number formats other than dates and times are not applied.
  • No test file was written by Excel itself, and Japanese phonetic text is not tested.
  • This build is signed with a throwaway test key that changes every build: uninstall before installing a newer one.

Files

Each file has a .sha256 next to it. LeanRows-0.1.1.apk is the build to install. The phone test files now include two workbooks, with a workbook step in PROGRESS.md.

@abooodbah abooodbah released this 29 Oct 10:39

LeanRows for Android, first pre-release. A read-only viewer for large CSV, TSV, JSON Lines and log files that keeps only the rows on screen in memory.

Not on Google Play yet. This build is for testing on a phone.

What works

  • Open with: CSV, TSV, JSON Lines and log files from any app (view and share), plus an open button.
  • The desktop row engine, ported and checked against the desktop's own output on 20 test files.
  • Find (with match case), go to row, tap a cell to see and copy it, sideways panning with the row numbers fixed, a fast scroller, rotation.
  • No permissions and no network.

Measured on an API 34 emulator (no GPU)

  • APK: 204 KB.
  • A 100,001-row file indexed in 461 ms; the app used about 27 MB after opening it.
  • Start: no slower than an empty app to the first frame.

The emulator has no GPU, so start time and scrolling still need a real phone; the steps are in PROGRESS.md under "Phone test".

Known gaps

  • .xlsx files are not supported yet.
  • Columns are named Column 1, Column 2 and so on; there is no header detection, as in the desktop app.
  • Long records show at most 64 fields of 1,024 bytes from their first 4 KiB.
  • This build is signed with a throwaway test key that changes every build: uninstall before installing a newer one.

Files

Each file has a .sha256 next to it. LeanRows-0.1.0.apk is the build to install and time; the debug APK, the empty app and the phone-test files are for the phone test.
