OpenTape v0.1.1
A small update: one important fix, a refreshed icon, and less clutter.
Fixed
- Exporting after a crash. If OpenTape quit mid-recording (a crash or a force-quit), restoring that recording and exporting it now works and keeps the whole take. Before, the export could fail or come out short.
- Command menu. Sound panel and Mute no longer show up for recordings that have no sound.
Changed
- A slightly refined app icon, with some minor changes like centering it and adjusting sizes.
- No more "Coming soon". The camera button, captions and audio tracks, the volume sliders and the Wallpapers tab were placeholders for features that aren't ready, so they're gone until they work.
New
- A ⌘ button in the editor header opens the command menu, the same one as ⌘K.
Install
OpenTape updates itself, so you'll be offered this version at launch.
New here? Download OpenTape.dmg below, or install with Homebrew:

New
- Record a display, a window or an area, with the microphone and system audio.
- Auto zoom on clicks and typing, following the cursor while zoomed.
- A smooth cursor in several styles, with optional click effects.
- Frame it on a gradient, color or picture, at Auto, 16:9, 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5.
- Edit lightly: cut, trim, speed up and blur, with undo and ⌘K.
- Export to MP4 or GIF, up to 4K at 60 fps, to a file or the clipboard.
Install
Download OpenTape.dmg below, open it and drag OpenTape to Applications. It needs an Apple silicon Mac on macOS 15 or later. On first launch, a window walks you through the Screen Recording and microphone permissions.
Good to know
- Everything stays on your Mac: no account, no cloud. The only request the app makes is the update check.
- The app updates itself. To hear about new versions, star the repo and choose Watch → Custom → Releases.
- It's early: camera, captions and per-track volume are coming soon. Please report bugs as issues.
