nes-pi 0.1.1: refinements
What's new
- OPTIONS from the in-game menu. The in-game menu is now SAVE STATE, LOAD STATE, OPTIONS, RESET, GAME LIST, POWER OFF. OPTIONS opens over the paused game, and every option applies at once.
- Battery saves written at POWER OFF. Games with battery-backed RAM (Zelda and friends) now keep their saves when you switch off with POWER OFF, as well as when you change game. Always switch off with POWER OFF before unplugging.
- RESET is the console's RESET button, as on a real NES, instead of switching it off and on.
Install
- Extract
nes-pi-0.1.1-sd.zipto the root of a FAT32-formatted microSD card. - Copy your games in
.nesformat (iNES / NES 2.0, NTSC) into thenespifolder. No BIOS is needed. - Connect a USB gamepad and an HDMI display (on a Pi 4: HDMI 0, the port next to the power socket), insert the card and power on your Raspberry Pi.
Updating from 0.1.0: copy the new files over the old ones; your nespi folder (games, saves, settings) is kept. config.txt is replaced too: if you had changed it (for example for 720p), make the change again.
Games are not included with nes-pi. Full instructions and controls are in README.txt inside the zip.
nes-pi 0.1.0: first public release
nes-pi 0.1.0
The first release of nes-pi: a streamlined, bare-metal NES emulator for Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi 3, with no unnecessary layers and highly responsive input. Built on Circle and Nestopia, from the maker of neo-pi.
Highlights
- Responsive controls: pads read every millisecond and beam racing, so what you press shows up on screen a couple of milliseconds later, almost as quickly as on the original hardware with a CRT
- Accurate emulation: Nestopia core, battery saves, one save state slot per game
- TV filter: OFF (sharp pixels), RGB (scanlines), or blargg's NTSC filter through S-Video, composite or RF, on a core of its own: no added lag
- Palettes: Nestopia's own, a consumer TV, the Sony CXA2025AS decoder, or your own
.palfile (nespi/palette.pal) - Sprite flicker: original (8 sprites per line) or reduced
- Lazy finger turbo buttons, screenshots, Toaster mode (one game on the card boots straight into it), safe power off
