0.9.0
360° clips from Insta360 cameras, looked around in as they play. Settings in a clear order: Source, Transform, Output. Action Footage Library, a companion app for the trip's batches. Still alpha.
Install:
- Mac:
ActionFootagePlayer-0.9.0-macos-arm64.dmg. Open it and drag both apps onto Applications. The first time, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. The same apps are also in-macos-arm64.zip. - Windows:
ActionFootagePlayer-0.9.0-windows-x86_64-setup.exe, orActionFootagePlayer-0.9.0-windows-arm64-setup.exeon a PC with an ARM processor. SmartScreen warns the first time: More info → Run anyway.
Upgrading from 0.8.0: a trip's _ActionFootagePlayer folder becomes one file, Project.afproject, the first time the player opens one of its clips. A clip's .marks.json moves into <clip>.afp.json the same way.
What's new:
- 360° cameras: look around. Open a 360 camera's own file, as it comes off the card. The player stitches its lenses as it plays, with the horizon level while the camera tilts.
- Turning: drag, or two fingers on a trackpad, to turn your head; the wheel or a pinch to zoom.
- Projections (Alt+p): rectilinear, stereographic, or a little planet. Alt+v switches the 360° view off and on.
- What the view follows (Alt+h): the camera, the world, or the way you move, from the camera's GPS. A mode the clip has no data for is greyed out and says why.
- Fast: on a 120 Hz screen the view follows your fingers in about 10 ms, whether the video plays or is paused.
- Already stitched clips (equirect, with spherical metadata) play in the same 360° view.
- Exports: the stabilized sphere as a 360° video for YouTube and editors (
gyroflow-export --360), and a flat video along where you looked (--reframe). - Insta360 X5 is the camera this version is tuned on. More cameras come next.
- Source, Transform, Output: the side panel's three tabs in place of Clip, Look and Stabilization.
- Source is how the clip is read: its log curve, the turn it was recorded with, and the lens under water. It's saved with the clip by its own button.
- Transform is how it's shown: stabilization, level, horizon, color fringes, the frame's ratio and orientation, and the projection. It's kept as a whole, in one place at a time: the moment's own, the clip's, or the session's. Save, Revert to saved, Use as default and Auto save say which.
- Output is where it goes: this screen or a file.
- The lens corrected on its own: a clip with a lens profile but no motion data, or with stabilization off, still gets its lens corrected. Lens as recorded keeps it as shot.
- HDR that isn't log (a phone's HLG or PQ, a camera's HLG mode) plays and exports with Dolby Vision trims, or to SDR by NBCU's conversion.
- A clip's view kept with it: the curve, stabilization, level, horizon, lens under water, color fringes and the frame are saved in
<clip>.afp.jsonbeside it, with its marks. - The frame: an aspect, a turn by 90°, 180° or 270°, and fisheye output lenses (stereographic, equidistant, equisolid, orthographic). Clips shot with the camera turned play, stabilize and export upright.
- Action Footage Library: a new app beside the player for the trip's batches, with a queue that shows each job's progress and can stop it. Double-click a trip's
Project.afprojectto open it there.- Clip previews.
- Moments of all marks.
- Photos of all marks, as stills, Live Photos or Motion Photos.
- New: export all moments, in HDR as recorded or in SDR.
- Keys work in a Cyrillic layout too.
- Faster Live Photos.
- Fixed:
- Network shares and cards on Windows: what goes to the Trash from there is kept aside in the project's
.Trashinstead of being deleted for good. - Long paths on Windows: clips with paths past 260 characters keep their marks, previews, highlights, telemetry and look.
- Quitting: it no longer waits for the project's clips to be counted, and a video opened while a player quits opens in a new one.
- Motion Photos: the video plays in the photo's SDR look, no longer far darker.
- Dolby Vision exports onto an SMB share no longer fail at the end.
- HDR on Mac: the HDR, HLG look switches the screen to EDR again.
_Stillsis no longer taken for footage.
- Network shares and cards on Windows: what goes to the Trash from there is kept aside in the project's
Coming next: more 360 cameras (GoPro MAX 2, DJI Osmo 360); marks and moments into Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Premiere Pro; browsing a trip in the Library.

0.8.0
Moments, marks and clip previews as plain files in the trip's folder; photos from the video, with Live Photos and Motion Photos; cutting out a spoiled part without re-encoding. Still alpha.
Install: on a Mac, ActionFootagePlayer-0.8.0-macos-arm64.dmg: open it, drag the app onto Applications and, the first time, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway (the same app is also there as -macos-arm64.zip). On Windows, ActionFootagePlayer-0.8.0-windows-x86_64-setup.exe, or on a PC with an ARM processor ActionFootagePlayer-0.8.0-windows-arm64-setup.exe: SmartScreen warns the first time, More info → Run anyway. Upgrading from 0.7.0 needs nothing special.
What's new:
- A project for a trip: the trip's folder, set up once in the side panel's new Project tab (Initialize the project here), never by itself. What you make goes into folders you can see beside your footage:
_Moments,_Clips,_Exports,_Stills, and_ActionFootagePlayerfor the player's own notes. Everything finds the clips by where they are in the trip's folder, so the folder can be copied or moved to another disk or a NAS, footage and project together. Viewing never saves anything. - Moments (
k): mark a part withltwice, presskand name it. A moment is a small.afplink.mp4file in_Momentswith a frame to see in Finder or File Explorer and a link to the original inside; double-click it, and that part of the original plays in full quality, stabilized as you kept it. Subfolders of_Momentsare yours; rename or delete a moment's file and the moment is renamed or gone. - Marks (
M): a mark of your own on the seek bar, beside the camera's highlights;Mon a mark removes it. They're kept in a small<clip>.marks.jsonbeside the clip, and need no project. - Clip previews and
X: Make clip previews in the Project tab fills_Clipswith a small color flip-book per clip, so a log trip is in color in Finder's icons and Quick Look.Xsets a clip aside (its preview to the Trash),Xagain brings it back. - Named exports:
Shift+Easks for a name and exports into_Exports, with a link back to the original; a part that wasn't a moment yet is kept as one too. - Photos (
Alt+s) and Save frame (c): pause on the moment, frame it (on a stabilized clip, dragging turns the camera through the lens, so faces in the corners aren't stretched), and save a photo rendered from the original at full resolution, cleaned of the sensor's noise from the frames around it: a HEIC on a Mac, an Ultra HDR JPEG elsewhere, both with a gain map for HDR screens, in_Stills. - Live Photos and Motion Photos: the photo with 3 s of the video around it, a Live Photo on a Mac (Photos and the iPhone take it as one), Android's Motion Photo on Mac and Windows.
- Cutting out a spoiled part (
Ctrl+x): the part marked withlis cut out of the clip without re-encoding, after asking; the camera's data (gyro, lens, timecode, sound) stays, each new clip is checked before anything is replaced, the original goes to the Trash with its side files, and marks and moments follow. DJI clips for now. - Originals found again: every moment, clip preview, export and marks file carries a fingerprint of its original, to find it after it's been moved or renamed.
- Fixed:
Xon a clip without a preview stopped the project's script.
Coming next: marks and moments into Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Premiere Pro; K for favorites; a project in Documents for a locked card.
NBCU's LUTs were developed by NBCUniversal Media, LLC and are distributed by NBCU publicly and freely, "as is". DJI's LUT is downloaded from DJI, not redistributed. 0.7.0
HDR + Dolby Vision on a Mac's SDR screen, with each frame's own light levels; settings in a panel beside the video; the Mac app as a disk image. Still alpha.
Install: on a Mac, ActionFootagePlayer-0.7.0-macos-arm64.dmg: open it, drag the app onto Applications and, the first time, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway (the same app is also there as -macos-arm64.zip). On Windows, ActionFootagePlayer-0.7.0-windows-x86_64-setup.exe, or on a PC with an ARM processor ActionFootagePlayer-0.7.0-windows-arm64-setup.exe: SmartScreen warns the first time, More info → Run anyway. Upgrading from 0.6.8 needs nothing special.
What's new:
- HDR, HLG+DV (Mac): the HLG picture is shown by macOS's own video layer with Dolby Vision metadata on every frame, so macOS tones it down for an SDR screen the way it does a Dolby Vision video, and shows it in HDR on an HDR screen. It's what SDR screens start in on a Mac.
- Each frame's own light levels: the player measures every frame as it plays (on the GPU, on the picture macOS gets) and sends its darkest, average and brightest levels with it (Dolby Vision's L1), so macOS maps each scene for what's in it: a dark dive and a sunlit beach each get their own room.
dv_live_l1=noindlogm.confgoes back to fixed levels. - Trims fitted to NBCUniversal's HLG → SDR conversion (the "NBCU fit"), on top of each frame's levels, with no scene-level offsets, so an HDR screen still gets full HDR.
- SDR, HLG+DV (new): the same, always toned down to SDR by the trims, on an HDR screen too: what an SDR screen shows.
- Dolby Vision trims by hand: the side panel's Dolby Vision part has sliders for the trims macOS honours (slope, offset, power, mid contrast, highlight roll-off, saturation, chroma weight); playback follows at once. "Back to the author's trims" restores the NBCU fit, "Neutral trims" leaves Dolby Vision's own mapping with nothing added.
- Exports in HLG+DV carry the trims, each frame's light levels (measured as the export writes it, the same way as the player) and Dolby Vision's configuration box, so QuickTime and Apple's devices show them as the player does.
- Video outputs named by what they are, in this order on
Ctrl+sand in the panel: HDR, HLG · HDR, HLG+DV · SDR, HLG+DV · SDR tone mapped from HDR by mpv · SDR, NBCU · SDR, camera maker's LUT. A line under the list says what the chosen one is. - Settings in a panel beside the video (
Tab): Clip, Look, Stabilization, Performance & Quality, Telemetry, Dolby Vision, and Support at the bottom (the app's and mpv's versions, Keys…, Note for the agent…, Report this camera…, Set up again…, the website and GitHub). Right click is mpv's own menu again. - Paused frame at full size:
Ctrl+frenders the paused frame at the video's own size, or Performance & Quality → Paused frame does it a moment after each pause; Temporal denoise (Ctrl+p, was "clean still frame") is there too. The edge fill keeps its trail through pauses. - A clip with a Gyroflow project plays as the project says: its horizon lock and lens; the ones set in the player are for clips without a project.
- Edge fill rate: the edges' trail written from every frame the GPU has room for (Auto), or from 50 % or 25 % of them.
- Windows: color fringes under water (
Ctrl+a) with mpv's D3D11 too. - Mac: a restart hint. When HDR looks a stop too dark on an SDR monitor because macOS kept an HDR display's settings for it, the player says so once and suggests restarting the Mac.
- The Mac app carries its own mpv, built from mpv's current source with presentation through macOS's video layer, Dolby Vision metadata per frame and the frame measurement added; the patches are in
tools/mpv-patches/.
NBCU's LUTs were developed by NBCUniversal Media, LLC and are distributed by NBCU publicly and freely, "as is". DJI's LUT is downloaded from DJI, not redistributed. Dolby Vision metadata is written by the player itself (with the MIT-licensed dolby_vision crate); no Dolby software is included. Dolby, Dolby Vision and the double-D symbol are trademarks of Dolby Laboratories; Action Footage Player is not affiliated with or endorsed by Dolby.
0.6.8
Windows playback that holds up on a laptop, and all the plugins in one zip per system. Still alpha.
Install: as 0.6.7. On a Mac, ActionFootagePlayer-0.6.8-macos-arm64.zip: move it to Applications and, the first time, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. On Windows, ActionFootagePlayer-0.6.8-windows-x86_64-setup.exe, or on a PC with an ARM processor ActionFootagePlayer-0.6.8-windows-arm64-setup.exe: SmartScreen warns the first time, More info → Run anyway. Upgrading from 0.6.7 needs nothing special.
What's new:
- Windows: the next clip of a playlist no longer crashes mpv. The gyroflow plugin stays loaded until mpv quits, instead of being unloaded while its threads still run.
- Windows on an integrated GPU: 3 GB of memory instead of 9. The stabilizer asks the GPU for less memory there, so the next clip no longer runs it out: six clips in a row played without an error on an Intel laptop.
- When the GPU can't keep up, playback asks. If frames are dropped for more than 2 s, playback pauses and offers lighter settings, most effective first: on a 15 W laptop with 4K60 clips, 30 fps with the frame's edge spread out, or 15 fps, show every frame. "Keep playing as it is" and "Don't ask again" are there too, and the pick is kept in
gyroflow.conf(fps_limit,resolution,ask_when_slow). Quality is on the right-click menu's top level. - Windows: the hdr look on an SDR display has its colors: mpv tones it for the display instead of being sent HLG it can't show.
- All the plugins in one zip per system:
mpv-plugins-0.6.8-<os>-<arch>.zip, five folders to unzip into mpv'sscripts/. The plugins' own zips are still here. - GoPro HERO12 Black verified: GP-Log and stabilization both played on its clips.
Known on Windows: the color fringe filter (Ctrl+a) doesn't compile under D3D11, so mpv leaves it off there; it works with --gpu-api=vulkan.
NBCU's LUTs were developed by NBCUniversal Media, LLC and are distributed by NBCU publicly and freely, "as is". DJI's LUT is downloaded from DJI, not redistributed. Built on Gyroflow master (3d9f610) with its GPU memory hint for integrated GPUs, from a fork until Gyroflow merges it.
0.6.7
SDR looks chosen by the screen: DJI's LUT or NBCU's neutral conversion on an SDR screen, HDR on an HDR one. Still alpha.
Install: as 0.6.6. On a Mac, ActionFootagePlayer-0.6.7-macos-arm64.zip: move it to Applications and, the first time, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. On Windows, ActionFootagePlayer-0.6.7-windows-x86_64-setup.exe, or on a PC with an ARM processor ActionFootagePlayer-0.6.7-windows-arm64-setup.exe: SmartScreen warns the first time, More info → Run anyway. Upgrading from 0.6.6 needs nothing special.
What's new:
Ctrl+sgoes through the clip's looks: HDR, then SDR through the camera maker's LUT (DJI's, for D-Log M), then SDR through NBCUniversal's HLG → SDR conversion: a broadcast standard rather than a look, the same for every log curve, so GoPro's and Insta360's log get an SDR look too. A file tagged HDR (an export) has HDR as it is and NBCU's SDR.Ctrl+hgoes straight to HDR; the log curve stays onCtrl+l.- Clips start in what suits the screen (Mac): HDR on an HDR screen, the SDR look last chosen on an SDR one. What you choose with
Ctrl+sis what the next clips start in on that kind of screen; Look → Remember as default keeps it. A clip you haven't switched by hand follows its window to the other kind of screen. On Windows and Linux every screen counts as HDR, as before. - Seeing one in the other: on an HDR screen the SDR looks show as an SDR screen would show them; on an SDR screen HDR shows as macOS tones it down.
- Export in SDR for any curve: in the SDR look last chosen (the menu's Export in SDR);
gyroflow-export --nbcufrom the command line.
NBCU's LUTs were developed by NBCUniversal Media, LLC and are distributed by NBCU publicly and freely, "as is". DJI's LUT is downloaded from DJI, not redistributed.
0.6.6
Stabilization levels known when the clip opens, and the app for Windows on ARM. Still alpha.
Install: as 0.6.5. On a Mac, ActionFootagePlayer-0.6.6-macos-arm64.zip: move it to Applications and, the first time, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. On Windows, ActionFootagePlayer-0.6.6-windows-x86_64-setup.exe, or on a PC with an ARM processor (Snapdragon) ActionFootagePlayer-0.6.6-windows-arm64-setup.exe: SmartScreen warns the first time, More info → Run anyway. Upgrading from 0.6.5 needs nothing special; from earlier, see 0.6.5's notes.
What's new:
- Stabilization levels (
Ctrl+k): weak, medium, strong. They crop 10, 20 and 30 % of the distance from the frame's center to its edge and smooth at 50, 75 and 100 %; Wide aims for the frame's area as before, smoothed as the current level. Each is known when the clip opens: no zoom measured over the whole clip any more. - The clip plays from its first 4 s of motion data. The rest is read as the video plays, or while it's paused; after a seek the correction fades in.
lookaheadingyroflow.conf. - Smoothing that looks only at the seconds around each moment: Gyroflow's Default, its second pass against the level's margin instead of the clip's maximum. Holes in the motion data restart it.
- Projects play as in Gyroflow.
Ctrl+ewrites the motion data into the project, and a project saved without it gets it from the video. - Windows on ARM. The app built for arm64, with mpv, Python and VapourSynth built for it (VapourSynth from its source, as it has no arm64 build of its own); the plugin alone as
mpv-gyroflow-0.6.6-windows-arm64.zip. Exports encode on the processor (x265): ARM PCs have none of the NVIDIA, Intel or AMD encoders it uses. Built and smoke-tested on GitHub's arm64 runner, not yet tried on an ARM PC: reports welcome.
DJI's LUT is downloaded from DJI, not redistributed. Built on Gyroflow master (3d9f610).
Windows build dependencies
Not a release of the app: copies of what tools/make_windows_app.sh downloads that its source doesn't keep (shinchiro's mpv builds for Windows arm64 are on GitHub only for a few weeks). Each file as published by its maker, checked against the SHA-256 pinned in the script.

0.6.5
A clean still frame on pause, edges filled anew on the sphere, and clips on a NAS that open in a second or two. Still alpha.
Install: as 0.6.4. On a Mac, ActionFootagePlayer-0.6.5-macos-arm64.zip: move it to Applications and, the first time, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. On Windows, ActionFootagePlayer-0.6.5-windows-x86_64-setup.exe: SmartScreen warns the first time, More info → Run anyway. Upgrading from 0.6.1 or later needs nothing special, unless a project is stored inside a video (see below); from 0.6.0, see 0.6.1's notes.
What's new:
- Clean still frame on pause (
Ctrl+p). A moment after the video pauses, the frame is rebuilt from it and the 5 frames on each side of it, each moved onto it by the motion between them, so its noise and the particles in the water mostly go and the detail stays. About a second for 4K on an M1 Pro; the stabilization must be on.still,still_radius,still_delay,still_grainingyroflow.conf. - Edges filled anew. What's past the frame now comes from the sphere alone: what was seen in that direction of the world, and where nothing was yet, colors made up there too, so they stay with the world instead of the screen. Where the scene has changed past the edge, what was seen fades and the fill continues the current edge. New mode
smooth: only the frame's own colors, spread out from its edge.trail,zoom,frameandedges_zoomare gone; ingyroflow.confan old mode plays assphere. - Clips on a NAS open in a second or two. The plugin reads the motion data ahead, in parallel: 4–34 s before, 0.5–2 s now, over 2.5GbE and SMB.
Ctrl+afor the water's color fringes. The correction from 0.6.4 gets its key: taken out or left as recorded, while playing. Also Stabilization → Lens, andchromatic=ingyroflow.conf. Above water there's nothing to take out, and it switches nothing on.Ctrl+ekeeps the view. The wider view's FOV and the horizon lock go into the project, and a clip with a project opens in "On (Gyroflow project)".- The project is only the
.gyroflownext to the clip, and the video file is never written to.gyroflow-embedis nowgyroflow-project. A project stored inside a video isn't read any more, and that clip plays with the default preset: before updating, take it out with 0.6.4'sgyroflow-embed --extractand--remove(README, Upgrading). - Notes for an AI agent (
Ctrl+r). Rectangles round what's meant and a comment, saved with screenshots, the player's state and the log. - Opened from Finder, the video gets a window of its own, so that the picture no longer stays at SDR brightness now and then. Not measured yet: if it still happens, opening the clip again helps.
- The version is in the menu: the last submenu is "ActionFootagePlayer 0.6.5", and Report this camera… says it too.
DJI's LUT is downloaded from DJI, not redistributed. Built on Gyroflow master (3d9f610).
0.6.4
Smooth playback, and dive footage without the water's color fringes, with the lens in or out of the water as the camera says. Still alpha.
Install: as 0.6.3. On a Mac, ActionFootagePlayer-0.6.4-macos-arm64.zip: move it to Applications and, the first time, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. On Windows, ActionFootagePlayer-0.6.4-windows-x86_64-setup.exe: SmartScreen warns the first time, More info → Run anyway. Upgrading from 0.6.1 or later needs nothing special; from 0.6.0, see 0.6.1's notes.
What's new:
- Smooth playback. Playback no longer drops frames for seconds after nearly every action: on an M1 Pro, 4K60 stabilized, 200–580 dropped frames in 15 s → 0–2.
- The stabilized frame is rendered no bigger than the display shows it: 4K on a 1080p display is stabilized at 1920×1080, on a 14" XDR at 3024×1700. Moving the window to a display of another size sets it up again, paused for a second or two.
resolution=videoingyroflow.confkeeps the old behavior. - The wider view (
Ctrl+g) switches on the next frame, without reloading anything. - No edge fill work in clips where no frame leaves edges.
- Fixed: a green picture flashing red when the output wasn't 3840 or 1920 wide (2.7K projects).
- The stabilized frame is rendered no bigger than the display shows it: 4K on a 1080p display is stabilized at 1920×1080, on a 14" XDR at 3024×1700. Moving the window to a display of another size sets it up again, paused for a second or two.
- Color fringes under water taken out. Water bends blue more than red, so behind the camera's flat port red and blue land apart towards the frame's edges. Each color is now taken from where its own ray lands, wherever the lens is under water; how far comes from water's physics, nothing fitted to footage. No key of its own. Playback only: exports are as before.
- Lens under water, above water, or as the camera says (right-click menu → Stabilization → Lens). Auto, the default, follows the camera's In water / Out of water over the clip, so clips above water are no longer refracted as if under water. Only the Osmo Action 6 records it; for other cameras the project or preset decides.
Ctrl+utakes the lens out of the water and back. Alsounderwater=ingyroflow.conf,--underwateringyroflow-export.
DJI's LUT is downloaded from DJI, not redistributed. Built on Gyroflow master (3d9f610).
0.6.3
Noise reduction, and big clips from SD cards and flash drives that open and quit without the long wait. Still alpha.
Install: as 0.6.2. On a Mac, ActionFootagePlayer-0.6.3-macos-arm64.zip: move it to Applications and, the first time, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. On Windows, ActionFootagePlayer-0.6.3-windows-x86_64-setup.exe: SmartScreen warns the first time, More info → Run anyway. Upgrading from 0.6.1 or 0.6.2 needs nothing special; from 0.6.0, see 0.6.1's notes.
What's new:
- Noise reduction (
Ctrl+n, or Look → Noise reduction in the right-click menu).- The blotches of color in shadows and under water mostly go, and the detail stays. It runs on the GPU, before the log conversion lifts the shadows, on any clip, log or not.
- Off by default. It sticks for the next clips;
denoise=yesindlogm.conf(or Look → Remember as default) starts with it on. How strong:glsl-shader-opts=denoise_strength=2(1 by default). - Playback only: exports are as before.
- Big clips from slow storage (SD cards, flash drives):
- Opening no longer reads every motion sample just to see what the clip is: on a 7 GB clip from an SD card, 22 s → 1.3 s for that step. While it reads, the screen says "Gyroflow: reading the clip…".
- Quitting no longer waits for the telemetry to read the whole file: it took up to a minute from a card, and is now instant once the clip plays.
- Not yet: the stabilization itself still reads all the motion data as it starts, about 20 s from a cold card, and quitting during that waits for it. Stabilizing from the first seconds while the rest is read is #40.
- Stabilization after an update. An app put in place of another could start with the stabilization off ("Failed to initialize VapourSynth VSScript library"); it now sets up VapourSynth's Python for itself.
- The app with Homebrew's mpv (
install.sh --apps) plays again with Homebrew's VapourSynth 74 and later, instead of the sound alone. - For trying a branch without a release:
tools/dev_app.shbuilds the Mac app from a checkout the way the release does and puts it in ~/Applications.
DJI's LUT is downloaded from DJI, not redistributed. Built on Gyroflow master (3d9f610).
