@shreyansa98 shreyansa98 released this 19 Oct 14:52

Your music, spinning on your desktop. This is the first public beta of Vinyl, a free, open-source macOS app that turns whatever you're playing into a living desk scene.

What's in the box

  • 💿 A record that spins at 33⅓ rpm while music plays, with the album art on its label. It coasts to a stop when you pause.
  • 🎚 A tonearm that lifts, swings over and tracks the song's progress.
  • 🛋 Three scenes: Listening Room, After Hours and Turntable.
  • 🎧 Works with YouTube Music / YouTube in your browser, Spotify, Apple Music, and anything in Control Center's Now Playing.
  • 🗂 A pile of your last 5 songs on the desk. Click it to play one again.
  • 🖼 Automatic high-resolution covers, even when the browser only shares a thumbnail.
  • 🪶 Menu bar only, no Dock icon. About 0% CPU when paused.

Install

  1. Download Vinyl-0.1.0-beta.dmg below.
  2. Open it and drag Vinyl into Applications.
  3. Open Vinyl. If macOS says it can't verify the app (this beta isn't notarized yet), go to System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway, or run:
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Vinyl.app

Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later · Apple Silicon or Intel (universal).

Permissions

All optional, and asked only when needed: Automation for your browser (to replay YouTube songs from the pile) and for Spotify / Music (to replay exact tracks), plus Login Items if you enable Launch at Login. No Screen Recording, Accessibility or Full Disk Access. No analytics. Full details →

Beta notes

  • Developed and tested on macOS 15 (Apple Silicon). The Intel build and macOS 14 are untested so far; reports are very welcome.
  • Desktop icons sitting exactly over the record pile can't be clicked while the pile is shown.
