Update

Already using BenchBar? In the app, click Update Now in the update banner or the menu bar menu (BenchBar 0.6 and later check once a day). On 0.5.x, run this in Terminal:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/askysh/benchbar/main/install.sh | bash -s -- --yes

It updates the benchbar CLI in ~/.local/share/benchbar and the app in ~/Applications, quits a running BenchBar first and never touches a bench. From 0.6 on, benchbar self-update runs the same. If your benchbar is a git checkout of your own, git pull there and add --app-only.

Installed with Homebrew? Run brew upgrade, or click Update Now in the app: from 0.7.1 the app carries its command line tool, and Homebrew's benchbar hands off to it, so either way updates both. The tap gets a release a few minutes after it is published.

Changes

BenchBar.app carries its own copy of the CLI, and updating the app
updates both. Homebrew and the one line installer stay; their benchbar
hands off to the app's when the app is installed.

Changed

  • The app has the benchbar CLI inside it, the same version as the app,
and runs it. At launch, an app in /Applications or ~/Applications
links ~/.local/state/benchbar/bin/benchbar to it, and Homebrew's and
the one line installer's benchbar hand off to that link: every
benchbar on the Mac is the app's version, and an app updated by
Sparkle no longer leaves an older CLI behind. A git checkout never
hands off, and BENCHBAR_NO_HANDOFF=1 runs a copy as it is. Without
the app (or with it in the Trash) each copy runs itself, as before.
  • Update Now asks Sparkle, which replaces the app and its CLI where they
are, the cask's app included; nothing runs in Terminal and BenchBar
does not quit for it. brew upgrade still updates the cask's app when
Sparkle has not, and leaves it alone when Sparkle has. Copy Command
offers brew upgrade askysh/tap/benchbar-app for the cask's app. A
build without Sparkle opens the release page.
  • brew upgrade askysh/tap/benchbar-app replaces brew upgrade --cask --greedy ... everywhere: naming the cask is enough.
  • benchbar where shows the new install kind app, the app the CLI is
part of and the CLI it was handed off from (handoff_from in the
JSON). benchbar self-update from the app's CLI runs brew upgrade askysh/tap/benchbar-app for the cask's app and otherwise points at
    Check for Updates.
  • Doctor's "Second CLI" check knows the app's CLI: copies that hand off
to it are fine, and one too old to hand off is named with the command
that updates it. A helper block that names Homebrew's or the
installer's benchbar stays as it is when that copy hands off.

Fixed

  • A compiled mcp.py (__pycache__) was committed by mistake and
    shipped in the Homebrew tarball.
