What's new

  • Audio recording. With --record-dir DIR rfscan records the audio of the channels marked rec: r on a history row or on the activity screen in the TUI, or Record audio in the web GUI entry sheet. One WAV file per transmission (8 kHz μ-law, about 29 MB per hour), in a subdirectory per channel. Recording pauses by itself when the disk is more than 90% full. See Audio recording in DOC.md.
  • Listen to and delete recordings. The Recordings tab of the web GUI and w in the TUI list the recordings per channel. Play a file in the browser or on the local output, delete one file, or delete all the recordings (of every channel or of one channel) after a confirmation. Deleted files are logged.
  • DMR simplex on digi channels. --digi-hold (default 120 ms) keeps the lock over the gaps between the TDMA bursts of a radio in direct mode, so the lock no longer flaps and DSD-FME gets every frame. Analog channels keep 30 ms.
  • Web GUI audio with --local-audio off. The page is then the only audio, so it turns its audio on by itself. When the browser still waits for a tap, the button shows Audio (tap) and the first tap anywhere on the page starts the sound.
  • SCANNING no longer has dots: a wave of a dimmed letter moves across the word (bold italic in the web GUI).
  • Receiver problems: repeated dropped samples give a warning suggesting a lower --sample-rate, and the hints after setFrequency ... failed or a stream with no samples now say first to plug the receiver in again.
  • Development builds show the commit hash in the version (e.g. 0.6.0-dev+85f7bbb).

Windows (64-bit): download rfscan-0.5.0-win64.zip, unpack it anywhere and run rfscan.exe from a terminal. SoapySDR and the drivers for Airspy and RTL-SDR are included, PothosSDR is not needed. An RTL-SDR needs the WinUSB driver (Zadig), an Airspy needs nothing; for an SDRplay see README.txt in the package.

Linux and Raspberry Pi: build from source with packaging/linux/install.sh, see Installation in DOC.md.

rfscan-0.5.0-third-party-sources.zip holds the source code of the GPL and LGPL libraries in the package (librtlsdr, libusb, pthreads-win32); the list of all components, their versions and licenses is in licenses\SOURCES.txt of the package.

What's new

  • Activity log: sort and delete. Sort it by any column: in the TUI ←/→ choose the column and s reverses the order, in the web GUI tap a column header. d in the TUI (or the button in the web GUI entry sheet) deletes one entry after a confirmation.
  • Timed exclusions. An exclusion can be permanent, as before, or last 10, 30 or 60 minutes: Tab in the TUI exclusion popup, or the duration buttons in the web GUI. A timed exclusion is not written to the file and ends by itself. The exclusions list shows the minutes left; s in the TUI (Keep in the web GUI) makes it permanent.
  • Edit exclusion notes. Enter on the TUI exclusions screen, or tap an exclusion in the web GUI. Only that entry's comment in the file changes.
  • Web GUI on a phone: larger text in the lists, sort keys large enough to tap, one header style for History, Activity and Exclusions, and long notes cut with an ellipsis instead of widening the page.
  • Receiver errors: when the receiver stops responding (setFrequency ... failed) or stops delivering samples, rfscan now names the frequency and points to the receiver settings. The README has a box about setting --settle for your receiver.
  • Linux install script: it warns when the kernel's DVB-T driver for RTL-SDR is not blocked and prints the commands that fix it.

Windows (64-bit): download rfscan-0.4.0-win64.zip, unpack it anywhere and run rfscan.exe from a terminal.

What's new

  • Name and exclude channels from the detection history. In the TUI Tab selects a history row (arrows move it, Tab/Esc back): l names the channel or marks it digi, as on the activity screen, x excludes it and X excludes it with the adjacent channels. In the web GUI tap a history entry. When the excluded channels include the one the scanner is on, it leaves the signal at once.
  • Web GUI lists no longer wrap the date and time, and never scroll sideways: they show columns when their pane is wide enough and two lines per entry otherwise. The ±N channels button names the --exclude-wide value correctly also for one channel.
  • Step and bandwidth validation: the step must be a standard one (2.5k, 5k, 6.25k, 7.5k, 8.33k, 9k, 10k, 12.5k, 15k, 20k, 25k, 30k, 50k) and bw between 2.5k and 50k. A forgotten suffix (118M-136M:am:8.33, i.e. 8 Hz) used to hang the program at startup; it is now an error that suggests 8.33k.
  • Linux install script: packaging/linux/install.sh checks the build dependencies, builds rfscan and installs it to /usr/local (--uninstall removes it), see Installation in DOC.md.

Windows (64-bit): download rfscan-0.3.0-win64.zip, unpack it anywhere and run rfscan.exe from a terminal. SoapySDR and the drivers for Airspy and RTL-SDR are included, PothosSDR is not needed. An RTL-SDR needs the WinUSB driver (Zadig), an Airspy needs nothing; for an SDRplay see README.txt in the package.

rfscan now runs on Linux and the Raspberry Pi.

What's new

  • Linux and Raspberry Pi: build from source, see Installation in DOC.md. Tested on a Raspberry Pi 4 (4 GB, Debian 13 64-bit) with Airspy Mini, RTL-SDR (R828D) and SDRplay RSP1A; the scan is as fast as on a PC (speeds in the README). DOC.md also covers the DVB-T driver that takes the RTL-SDR, the SDRplay module and building DSD-FME on Linux.
  • Processor temperature next to the CPU load in the TUI and the web GUI, where the system reports it (e.g. on the Raspberry Pi).
  • Audio outputs on Linux have unique names, so --audio-device can pick each of them.
  • Web GUI behind a reverse proxy with a login: the app manifest now loads too, so the page added to the home screen has the right colors, and Chrome offers to install it as an app when the proxy serves HTTPS.
  • Web GUI: the exit threshold under the SNR bar is shown in the color of its marker.

Windows (64-bit): download rfscan-0.2.0-win64.zip, unpack it anywhere and run rfscan.exe from a terminal. SoapySDR and the drivers for Airspy and RTL-SDR are included, PothosSDR is not needed. An RTL-SDR needs the WinUSB driver (Zadig), an Airspy needs nothing; for an SDRplay see README.txt in the package.

@b4sh b4sh released this 20 Oct 20:34

First public release of rfscan, a fast radio scanner for SoapySDR receivers.

Windows (64-bit): download rfscan-0.1.0-win64.zip, unpack it anywhere and run rfscan.exe from a terminal. SoapySDR and the drivers for Airspy and RTL-SDR are included, PothosSDR is not needed. An RTL-SDR needs the WinUSB driver (Zadig), an Airspy needs nothing; for an SDRplay see README.txt in the package.

Start with the Quick start: the gain (--gain) and the settle time (rfscan --calibrate) are the basis of good results.

Tested on Windows 11 with Airspy Mini, RTL-SDR (R828D) and SDRplay RSP1A. Linux and the Raspberry Pi are planned.

rfscan-0.1.0-third-party-sources.zip holds the source code of the GPL and LGPL libraries in the package (librtlsdr, libusb, pthreads-win32); the list of all components, their versions and licenses is in licenses\SOURCES.txt of the package.
