ED Exo Compare 1.2.7 — portable
A journal-linked exobiology companion for Elite Dangerous. It reads your local journal, merges scans and organic signals, and predicts the candidate species on a body from FSS/DSS telemetry alone — with payout ranges, first-footfall tracking, a system map, a customisable HUD and a species encyclopedia.
This release is the single-file portable build. For the unpacked program folder plus the two console builds, see v1.2.7-zip — same version, same code.
Download EDExoCompare.exe and run it. Nothing is installed.
Notices, green gas giants, phenomena, codex firsts, boxels, and a HUD that steps aside when the game does.
What's new
- Notices under a new bell icon beside the mail (Options → Notify me chooses what comes)
- a) Notable finds: Earth-likes, water and ammonia worlds, terraformables, Helium and green gas giants.
- b) Personal records: largest and smallest of every star and planet type. Gold medal, optional chime.
- c) Notable stellar phenomena when you arrive in a system that has one.
- d) Points of interest, carriers and phenomena within a few jumps (you choose which).
- e) 23 optional body features (small bodies, fast orbits, ring views, shepherd moons, void cross…), all off until ticked.
- f) Read notices stay to be read again, until you clear them.
- Green gas giants
- a) Found by codex entry, the edGGG catalogue, their exact temperature, or a K10 anomaly in the system.
- b) Shown on the Notable card, in My discoveries (filter and search) and on the galaxy map.
- c) Mark any gas giant green or not green yourself.
- Phenomena card on the system row
- a) What you saw there, or what others logged there (EDAstro).
- b) Otherwise a prediction from what makes them spawn: the region, the main star and phenomena nearby.
- c) Shown only when something points to one.
- [CODEX FIRST]: a gold mark (and a notice) when nobody has logged a plant in the region yet.
- Boxel window (new)
- a) Every system of a boxel, what you flew, and what is recorded there.
- b) Save a boxel by its last system. Flown systems tick off as you jump.
- c) Bodies and notable finds per system. Skip or cut systems. Current and previous boxels.
- HUD overlays
- a) Hide while Elite is not running or not in front (option).
- b) "Only when relevant": a HUD with nothing to show steps aside.
- c) New Notable and Notices overlays.
- d) Save your own HUD colour schemes.
- Galaxy map: layers for points of interest, phenomena, carriers, bookmarks and green gas giants; bookmark any system you pick.
- Bookmarks: star any system, with tags and a note.
- Body details
- a) Scan and map value at the top. Escape closes the popup.
- b) Epic / Legendary badge next to the body name.
- c) Optional notable-body tabs beside the bio ones.
- Statistics: ranks with the credits to the next one; your records beside EDAstro's galactic records.
- Achievements: geology and space-borne phenomena sets per region.
- Unfinished business: codex entries you missed.
- Colour schemes for the whole app.
- Encyclopedia
- a) Field-guide cards like the website's species pages.
- b) Your current region, a colour filter and a "Not found yet" toggle.
- c) Conditions in plain words.
- Candidate species: a "Codex new" toggle. Panels remember their filters.
- My discoveries: says Logged / Sampled / Analysed. Sold bodies stay on the Notable card, marked "sold".
- Faster: panels open at once; the live link sends only what changed.
- Look: a new honeycomb background, a tidier phone layout, one panel style.
- Privacy policy and terms ship with the app. The EDSM route check no longer sends your EDSM key.
- The Live indicator shows minutes only.
- Fixes: an enlarged photo closing the Encyclopedia, galaxy map sliders jumping, and other tester reports.
Note: the first start reads your journals again, once. If you downloaded phenomena data, refresh it once in Options → Notify me.
Linux —
Still untested on a real Linux desktop with the game running. Both files are attached to v1.2.7-zip: EDExoCompare-1.2.7-x86_64.AppImage (launcher, tray, HUD overlays; needs FUSE 2 or --appimage-extract-and-run) and EDExoCompare-1.2.7-linux-x64.tar.gz (the browser build). Details in the README, under Linux. An issue saying what worked and what did not is welcome.
Where your data lives
%LOCALAPPDATA%\ED Exo Compare\ — settings, your LAN key, your EDSM credentials if you add them, the species you have scanned on foot, your Fix corrections, the journal folder you chose, your HUD layout, where your windows were, the systems you looked up on Spansh (kept 30 days), the shared exomastery folder, and the prediction caches. Nothing of yours is kept in the program folder, so replacing it on an update loses nothing. On Linux the same lives in ~/.config/edexo-compare. Backups go only where you point the Backups tile.
Your journals are read, never copied out. Uploads to EDSM, Canonn and EDDN happen only if you turn them on yourself. Looking a system up sends only its name or number to Spansh.
Windows will say the publisher is unrecognised. The executable is not code-signed, so SmartScreen asks first: "More info" → "Run anyway".
Licence
MIT. The species photographs are not covered by it — see NOTICE.md, which names every contributor and says which images are borrowed from the ED-DSN community and on what terms. The list of Frontier-populated systems and looked-up systems come from Spansh.
Licence correction (2026-10-01). This release contains data derived from EDAstro (CMDR Orvidius), whose content is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0. Those data files were shipped under the MIT notice by mistake: they are CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 — credit the sources, no commercial use, share alike — not MIT. ED Exo Compare is licensed in three parts: the code is MIT, the data is CC BY-NC-SA 3.0, and the species photographs are Elite Dangerous screenshots, Frontier's game art under Frontier's terms.
