ED Exo Compare 1.2.9 — portable
A journal-linked exobiology companion for Elite Dangerous. It reads your local journal, merges scans and organic signals, and predicts the candidate species on a body from FSS/DSS telemetry alone — with payout ranges, first-footfall tracking, a system map, a customisable HUD and a species encyclopedia.
This release is the single-file portable build. For the unpacked program folder plus the two console builds, see v1.2.9-zip — same version, same code.
Download EDExoCompare.exe and run it. Nothing is installed.
Close to tray, a HUD you can place anywhere, a much faster first start, FCX for first codex entries, LAN access you switch on yourself, and a round of fixes.
What's new
- "Close to tray" replaces "Minimise to tray"
- a) With it on, the X keeps the app running in the tray (the ˄ arrow next to the clock); minimise always goes to the taskbar.
- b) Off by default. The first time, a small notice says where the app went. Quit from the tray icon's menu.
- Starting the app again while it runs brings the launcher back, from the tray, the taskbar or behind other windows, instead of starting a second copy.
- FCX: a body tab shows FCX instead of CX when something there would be a first codex entry for the region (nobody has logged it yet). The HUD candidates list shows it too (was "CX1"). A dark chip with gold letters, readable in every colour scheme.
- LAN access is a switch
- a) Launcher → Network settings → "LAN access" lets your phone, tablet or second PC open the app. It applies after a restart ("Restart now").
- b) Off for a new install: only this PC can open the app until you turn it on.
- c) Already using EDEXO? Nothing changes: an existing install keeps LAN access on.
- A much faster first start: reading all your journals without the cache is about 4× faster (28 s → 7 s on a 300-journal history, more on longer ones), and the launcher stays responsive while it reads.
- Every start freezes less: saving and loading the journal cache no longer holds up the launcher.
- Faster while you scan: the display rebuilds in about half the time.
- Free move HUD
- a) Launcher → HUD settings → Position → "Free move HUD": the HUDs leave their corner and go wherever you drag them, on any screen. The spot is kept for the next start.
- b) "Move HUD" shows a frame on every HUD: drag it, then press Done (on the HUD or in the launcher). In the game, open the menu (Esc) to drag it to another screen.
- c) Near the bottom of a screen it grows upwards; if that screen goes away, it comes back onto one that is there.
- The tracker HUD shows the payout from the first scan (Log) instead of the second.
Fixes
- Journals
- a) Every start skipped the first line the game had written since the app last ran (a scan, a sample, a sale), and it stayed lost until the journals were read in full again.
- b) Lines the game wrote while the app was reading your journals (a game restart lands right there) could be counted twice or missed.
- c) Changing the history window while the app was still reading could leave the old readers running, so every new line counted two or three times.
- d) A journal restored from a backup at the same size is now noticed and read again.
- e) A journal drive that is not plugged in no longer throws the cache away.
- HUD
- a) Candidate prices match the app: ×5 when nobody has landed, ×1 when somebody has, "×1 ?" while nobody knows (it always showed ×1).
- b) Candidates are listed in the app's order, most likely genus first.
- c) The HUD reconnects by itself after the app restarts or your phone's Wi-Fi drops, instead of falling back to slow updates until reopened.
- d) Restarting the app in the middle of sampling a plant no longer loses the distances to the plants already sampled (with the walking odometer off, a restart deleted them).
- The phone's triage screen names the system you are looking at, not the one your ship is in.
- Atmospheres read "Sulphur dioxide", not "SulphurDioxide", on the body card, the species cards and the system map.
- Every Brain Tree and Sinuous Tubers species has a price: a body with them got no sell range, or one too low.
- Stability
- a) A garbled network message (bad Wi-Fi, a scanner on your LAN) could close the whole app.
- b) A phone that went to sleep no longer has the app sending to it forever.
- c) A cache save interrupted by an antivirus no longer leaves a mismatched cache behind.
- Portable exe: starting it again while it runs no longer deletes the running copy's files (the app showed empty pages until restarted).
- Quit and restart
- a) "Restart now" restarts reliably, and "Keep the app open" during a backup no longer leaves a restart waiting for the next quit.
- b) Quitting no longer closes other copies of the app or freezes for a few seconds.
- c) Windows logoff or shutdown saves your on-foot data first.
- Security
- a) A web page open in your browser can no longer read or control the app.
- b) Settings that act on this PC (journal folder, uploads, EDSM credentials, downloads) change only from this PC, not from a paired phone.
- c) Restoring a backup can no longer write files outside the folders it restores into.
- d) Links in the launcher and the HUD open in your browser, never inside the app, and the app's windows get no camera or microphone.
- e) Canonn uploads send only the events Canonn's list names; stalled Canonn and EDSM requests time out.
- NOTICE and LICENSE-DATA name the galaxy map's index, built from EDAstro and Spansh data.
Note: the journals are not read again; your cache is kept.
Linux —
Still untested on a real Linux desktop with the game running. Both files are attached to v1.2.9-zip: EDExoCompare-1.2.9-x86_64.AppImage (launcher, tray, HUD overlays; needs FUSE 2 or --appimage-extract-and-run) and EDExoCompare-1.2.9-linux-x64.tar.gz (the browser build). Details in the README, under Linux. An issue saying what worked and what did not is welcome.
Where your data lives
%LOCALAPPDATA%\ED Exo Compare\ — settings, your LAN key, your EDSM credentials if you add them, the species you have scanned on foot, your Fix corrections, the journal folder you chose, your HUD layout, where your windows were, the systems you looked up on Spansh (kept 30 days), the shared exomastery folder, and the prediction caches. Nothing of yours is kept in the program folder, so replacing it on an update loses nothing. On Linux the same lives in ~/.config/edexo-compare. Backups go only where you point the Backups tile.
Your journals are read, never copied out. Uploads to EDSM, Canonn and EDDN happen only if you turn them on yourself. Looking a system up sends only its name or number to Spansh.
Windows will say the publisher is unrecognised. The executable is not code-signed, so SmartScreen asks first: "More info" → "Run anyway".
