Veronica Chang edited this page Feb 10, 2023 · 1 revision

Objective

Complete the first initial assignment:

  • Set up my Student Wiki in the course repo and add links to the main Student Wiki page.
  • Install docker and create a new image and container.

Started: 2023-01-09
Completed: 2023-01-09
Estimated time: 2 hrs
Actual time: 1.5 hrs

Procedure

  • Set up my Student Wiki Page.
    • Submitted an issue in the Student Wiki repo.
    • Received invitation.
  • Start my Journal.
    • This is my first entry.
  • Add links to my wiki and repo to the main Student Wiki page.
  • Downloaded and installed Docker through the docker website.
  • Create a new Docker image and container.
    • Run docker run -e PASSWORD=changeit -v "$(pwd)":/home/rstudio/projects -p 8787:8787 risserlin/bcb420-base-image:winter2023
    • Checked if I can access the container by going to localhost:8787 on Google Chrome – I was able to log into RStudio.

Results

  • Successfully set up my student wiki and repo, and started my first journal entry.
  • Managed to install Docker and create a container to run the course image with no issues.
    • Although Docker seems to overwhelm my machine, with > 100% CPU usage regardless of whether the container is running (com.docker.hyperkit).
    • Troubleshooting: tried all of the suggestions in this GitHub thread, still experiencing the same issue.

Conclusion

  • I am now ready for the course with my repo and wiki set up.
  • I will continue to try troubleshooting my issues with Docker. I hope to fix it soon as it looks like it would be a great tool for most projects. (Edit 2023-01-10: Emailed Dr Isserlin and was suggested to downgrade my Docker version so I installed 4.4.2 and the CPU usage has greatly decreased).
