bit-chifter v0.1.0

@billwolfhub billwolfhub released this 16 Oct 21:24

The first release of bit-chifter: a frequency shifter and ring modulator voiced as a shortwave sideband receiver, for the Synthux Simple Touch with a Daisy Seed.

What's in it

  • TUNE (fader 1) is a sideband dial: a fine ±400 Hz zone with swoop zones to ±2 kHz at the ends, a heavy-dial glide, and harmonic detents that catch the shift where it turns musical again.
  • RECEPTION (fader 2) loses the signal in the ether: drift, fading, static and crackle, a pumping AGC, input drive and a wandering dial. It also sets how strong the pad effects are.
  • Ring mod, a radio filter, barberpole feedback, and dry/wet with a light stereo plate reverb on its top end.
  • 30 pad effects on three pages (switch 1), each on while its pad is held:
    • Shift & time: shifted, reverse and ping-pong echoes (they ring out after release), spiral up/down, chirp, warble, dial spins, feedback burst
    • Radio: scrambler (plain and hopping), passing carriers, selcall, Morse chimes, jammer, static burst, squelch, signal fade-out, filter slam
    • Digital & damage: bitcrush, sample-rate crush, stutter, dropouts, codec warble, ring 100%, carrier ×2, kill dry, hold drift, chaos
  • Switch 2: Normal / Freeze / Loop on the input.
  • Stereo in and out, with three stereo modes on the TOU logo pad.

See the README for the controls, a pad map and sounds to try.

Installing

bit-chifter-v0.1.0.bin is built for the Daisy bootloader (APP_TYPE = BOOT_SRAM), so the Seed needs the Daisy bootloader v6.4 installed first. Install it once from the Bootloader tab at flash.daisy.audio (choose v6.4).

Then flash bit-chifter: tap RESET, press BOOT while the Seed's LED is slowly pulsing, and run:

dfu-util -a 0 -s 0x90040000:leave -D bit-chifter-v0.1.0.bin -d ,0483:df11

Don't flash this file to internal flash (0x08000000): that would overwrite the bootloader, and bit-chifter won't run from there.
