I was not able to reproduce the described behavior and have not seen it mentioned on the web. I'll assume that this was a misunderstanding. * Remove defensive programming The only places in this code that we can expect to throw are schema.parse(), JSON.parse(), JSON.stringify(), and localStorage.getItem/setItem/removeItem. Let's push try/catch'es where we expect them to be necessary. * Don't write or clobber defaults Writing defaults to local storage is unnecessary. We would write them as a part of next update anyway. So I'm removing that to reduce the number of moving pieces. However, we do need to be wary of _state being set to defaults. Because _state gets mutated on write. We don't want to mutate the defaults object. To avoid having to think about this, let's copy on write. We don't write to this object very often. * Refactor: extract tryParse * Refactor: move string parsing into tryParse * Extract tryStringify, split logging by platform Shared data parsing/stringification errors are always logged. This optimizes cross-tab communication in a few ways.
061fcef: Don't broadcast if nothing has changed. This fixes a new tab always sending a broadcast. (There are ways to fix it at the callsite but it's a bit annoying to think about. This should be cheap enough since we don't write often.)
8fb0ea2: Tweaks the
onPersistedAPI to include a key. This will let us subscribe granularly and avoid setting state on every provider when syncing persisted state. This commit does not actually enable granular subscriptions yet.63a79e7: Adds a new broadcast event that's specific to a particular
keythat's being written. This maps to the corresponding more targeted event emitter event. I left the old event for backwards compat because after a deploy, some users will have tabs with both versions, and we'd want those to stay in sync. (We'll delete the old event later.)Test Plan
Add some console logs to
persisted.onUpdatehandlers. Verify they don't get called unless that specific setting was changed. In particular, check that thesessionsetting (watched bysession/index.tsx) does not get invalidated on a color theme change or merely by opening a new tab. Verify that switching accounts no longer causes each tab to rebroadcast.Also need to verify that browser tabs with code before and after this change can still stay in sync.
