Google Maps is actually known for its map service and navigation service, however it has some features that are similar to our project. It lets us add new places to the map, add pictures for places, make comments on places, rate places, and report inappropriate content. The main difference between places of Google Maps and our project is the fact that Google Maps focuses on 'places', whereas our project focuses on 'stories'.

You are probably familiar with Instagram as it is one of the most popular social media platforms as of today. (You probably possess an account as well.) It's mainly a platform where you can post pictures (posts), like other peoples' posts and comment on them. Location services deployed by Instagram has been one of its most commonly used features. You can add location to your posts, your stories and see other photos taken near that location. It also has a tag mechanism. If you click on one of those tags(marked with a hash sign hence the name hashtag), you can see other posts that have that same tag under it. Here are some similar and different features between our app and Instagram:

History of English Places is an app to discover history of different locations in England. The user can choose a location(village, city, etc.) from the map and see a historical definition of that location. The user is also able to share, bookmark and report the content. For free users, the app does not provide much information. Subscripted users may see detailed information about a place. The app tracks the location of the user and presents information about the nearest 10 places. Searching for a place is also supported in the app. The app is not crowdsourced and far from being social, but the idea of location-based information is similar to our project.

Foursquare is another program that is very similar to our project. It is an app that lets its users check in on places they visited and lets them add short stories about their experience and also add pictures of the place if they want. The main difference may be that our project mostly conveys the nostalgic parts of a place and is more story oriented while foursquare makes travel recommendations on places according to relatively recent experiences.

Steller is an application where users share their experiences in their locations through stories and pictures. It allows users to discover interesting places to go and interesting things to do around the world. Users can save, like and comment on stories and pictures they find interesting. I likened Steller to our project as there is location based story sharing in both our project and Steller.
