Highlights

  • Info panel in the viewer. I or the ⓘ button shows the camera, lens, focal length, aperture, shutter speed and ISO from the photo's EXIF, the keywords it carries, the people Picasa named in it, and the albums it is in.
  • Albums. photon's own, kept in its library. Create one with "New album…" in the sidebar; add photos from a tile's right-click menu or the info panel's checkboxes; rename or delete from the album's right-click menu.
  • People. Faces named in Picasa (.picasa.ini) appear as a People list in the sidebar and are outlined over the photo while the info panel is open. Read only, like stars: naming a face in Picasa shows up on the next scan.
  • Tags. Keywords written into the photo by Picasa, Lightroom, Bridge, digiKam and the like (XMP dc:subject and IPTC keywords) appear as a Tags list in the sidebar. Read only.
  • Search on metadata. The search box now also matches a camera or lens name, a keyword, 50mm, f/1.8, iso400, or a date such as 2024-06.
  • Rotate in the viewer. R and Shift+R, or the ↻ and ↺ buttons. Display only; nothing is written, and the next photo opens upright.
  • Scan progress. A running scan shows a progress bar in the status bar, measured against the folder's previous photo count.
  • Settings dialog. Folder management moved from the sidebar into a Settings dialog behind the gear in the top bar, with each folder's status and photo count, plus an About section. The sidebar is now navigation only.
  • Resizable sidebar. The bar between the folder list and the grid drags along its full height, and the arrow keys resize it when it has focus.

Fixes

  • Scans no longer re-trigger themselves. On Linux, every scan's own reads were reported by the file watcher as changes, so each scan scheduled the next one two seconds later for as long as photon ran. A rescan now runs once and stops. macOS and Windows were not affected.
  • The mouse's back button closes the viewer on Linux, as it already did on macOS and Windows.

Upgrading

Nothing needs to be done. A library from an earlier photon picks up camera data and keywords on the next scan of each folder, which reads every file's header once and leaves thumbnails alone.

Album membership is by library row, so a photo renamed or moved on disk leaves its albums once the old row is purged. Stars survive that because they live in Picasa's INI; album membership does not.

Not in this release

Writing keywords or faces back to files, importing Picasa's own albums, multi-select in the grid.

Unsigned installers. See the README for the security warnings each OS shows, and how to get past them.
