Highlights

  • Take a photo out of someone's photos. In a person's view, right-click photos in the grid and choose "Remove from “Anna”". In the viewer, right-click and choose "Not Anna". photon takes Anna's face off the photo, as "Not this person" does on the People page, and does not suggest it for her again.
  • Name a face where you see it. In the viewer, right-click a face that has no name and choose "Name this face…", or, with the info panel open, click its outline. A "Who is this?" box lists the people you named as you type; a new name makes a new person.
  • Add photos to someone from the grid. Select photos and choose "Add to a person…". photon names each photo's one unnamed face. It skips photos with more than one unnamed face, photos already that person's, and photos with a face you said is not them, and lists the skipped ones by file name so you can open them and choose the face.
  • Names in the info panel are links. Click a name to see that person's photos.

Your files are untouched

photon still never writes to, moves or deletes a photo file. Names are kept in photon's own library, never written into your photos or into .picasa.ini.

Picasa's own names are not changed either. A photo that is in someone's photos because Picasa named them there stays in them, and photon says so ("1 stays with Anna: Picasa names Anna on it.").

Upgrading

No change to the library format: 0.48.0 and 0.49.0 open the same library.

"Not Anna" in the viewer now applies to the whole photo, the same as the grid's Remove: if Anna appears twice on one photo, both faces are taken off.

"Add to a person…" appears only while "Find faces" is on.

Not in this release

Drawing a face by hand where photon found none.

Naming a face Picasa found and photon did not. It would mean writing to .picasa.ini.

Undo.

A check by hand. This has not been run in the app by a person yet. It was verified by the test suites on Linux, macOS and Windows and by screenshots of the UI; the smoke checklist lists what to try. The same still holds for 0.45.0 to 0.48.0.

Unsigned installers. See the README for the security warnings each OS shows, and how to get past them.
