Caduceus v0.23 (early development)

Pre-release

@cakelesscoder cakelesscoder released this 03 Nov 12:18

Caduceus v0.23 (early development)

⚠️ Unofficial, experimental firmware modification. Bugs will appear and flashing can brick your camera or lose data. The author accepts no responsibility for any damage. Provided "as is", without warranty (Apache License 2.0 §7–8). Without the EP7MOD folder the camera is almost stock; the restore file returns it fully to stock 1.1.

What's new

  • No more duplicate looks on the Film page: if a profile was already on a library look, turning the dial showed that look twice. The unedited copy is now skipped. If you've edited the look (*), your edited version stays in the cycle so you can get back to it.

  • Film: prefix is back on the colour Film page, for every look name: Film: Velvia, Film: Kodachrome64*.

  • Firmware screen shows Caduceus: 0.23. Card files (EP7MOD/LOOKS.BIN) are unchanged from v0.22.

  • Installer update (same firmware, no new build): the builder now flushes the files to the SD card, gives a clear message when macOS blocks writing to the card, and reminds you to eject first. New troubleshooting section in docs/INSTALL.md for a colour wheel that looks stock after updating.

Install / update

No firmware files attached (OM's licence). Download the source zip below and double-click the launcher for your system (or python3 caduceus.py build --release v0.23). Copy DCOLYMP to the card (and EP7MOD/LOOKS.BIN if you're coming from before v0.22), keep your own EP7MOD/BUNDLES.BIN, then hold OK while switching on to flash. Guide: README › Install.

Only the E-P7 on firmware 1.1 is supported. If you enjoy it: buy me a coffee ☕

Caduceus v0.22 (early development)

Caduceus v0.22 (early development)

⚠️ Unofficial, experimental firmware modification. Bugs will appear and flashing can brick your camera or lose data. The author accepts no responsibility for any damage. Provided "as is", without warranty (Apache License 2.0 §7–8). Without the EP7MOD folder the camera is almost stock; the restore file returns it fully to stock 1.1.

Includes v0.21 (not released separately).

What's new

  • Noise reduction per look (replaces colour grain): camera tests showed the camera's grain stages add nothing visible to colour photos, so colour "grain" is gone. Extras sector 1 is now NR: Camera (leave the camera's Noise Filter alone), Std, Low, Off (most natural texture). It's set when you pick a look or change sector 1. Noise Filter is camera-wide, so it stays at the last value when switching profiles. Shows mostly at higher ISO. True film grain is on the roadmap.
  • Blur Art Effect removed (#20): on colour profiles it could restart the camera without saving. Art Effect now cycles Off / Star Light / Pin Hole; a saved Blur reads as Off.
  • Known issue (#19): with bloom/clarity looks, Rec View shows a quick preview then goes dark while the effect is processed. The photo is correct; use Rec View Auto ▶ or press ▶.
  • Firmware screen shows Caduceus: 0.22. Control Panel updated (noise reduction labels).

Install / update

No firmware files attached (OM's licence). Download the source zip below and double-click the launcher for your system (or python3 caduceus.py build --release v0.22). Copy DCOLYMP and the new EP7MOD/LOOKS.BIN to the card, keep your own EP7MOD/BUNDLES.BIN, then hold OK while switching on to flash. Guide: README › Install. A card that uses NR Std needs v0.22.

Only the E-P7 on firmware 1.1 is supported. If you enjoy it: buy me a coffee ☕

@cakelesscoder cakelesscoder released this 02 Nov 06:19

Caduceus v0.20 (early development)

⚠️ Unofficial, experimental firmware modification. Bugs will appear and flashing can brick your camera or lose data. The author accepts no responsibility for any damage. Provided "as is", without warranty (Apache License 2.0 §7–8). Without the EP7MOD folder the camera is almost stock; the restore file returns it fully to stock 1.1.

What's new

  • LCD pink cast fixed: the E-P7's rear screen has always shown live view slightly pink (its panel colour table sets green lower than red/blue). Green is now corrected by default.
  • Monitor Adjust colour → green↔magenta: Setup › Monitor Adjust's colour slider now tunes the screen from magenta to green (0 = corrected default). Display only: photos, movies and HDMI are untouched.
  • Includes everything from v0.19: tone per look (Highlights/Midtones/Shadows + Blacks/Whites), Blacks/Whites on Extras 6/7, and the updated Caduceus Control Panel.

Full history: CHANGELOG.md

Install / update

No firmware files are attached (OM's licence forbids redistributing their firmware). Download the source zip below and double-click the launcher for your system (or run python3 caduceus.py build --release v0.20). Copy DCOLYMP (and EP7MOD/LOOKS.BIN if you're coming from v0.18 or older) to the SD card, then hold OK while switching on to flash. Keep your own EP7MOD/BUNDLES.BIN. Full guide: README › Install.

Caduceus v0.19 (early development)

@cakelesscoder cakelesscoder released this 02 Nov 05:55

Caduceus v0.19 (early development)

⚠️ Unofficial, experimental firmware modification. Bugs will appear and flashing can brick your camera or lose data. The author accepts no responsibility for any damage. Provided "as is", without warranty (Apache License 2.0 §7–8). Without the EP7MOD folder the camera is almost stock; the restore file returns it fully to stock 1.1.

What's new

  • Tone per look: every film look now carries its own tone curve. Picking a look on the Film page applies its Highlights / Midtones / Shadows (through the camera's own tone control) and its Blacks / Whites: deeper blacks for slide films, softer whites for negatives, punchy narrow range for Polaroid, and so on.
  • Blacks and Whites per colour profile (−5..+5): new controls that move the very ends of the tone curve, which stock Highlight/Shadow never touches. Adjust them on the colour editor's Extras sectors 6 and 7; applied to photos and live view.
  • Look tweaks: Polaroid punchier, Atrophy's blacks toned down, Cuban Neg bloom 3.
  • Caduceus Control Panel updated: tone sliders with a live tone-curve graph, tone in share codes, exports the v0.19 LOOKS.BIN.
  • Setup › Firmware shows Caduceus: 0.19.

Install / update

No firmware files are attached (OM's licence forbids redistributing their firmware). Download the source zip below and double-click the launcher for your system (or run python3 caduceus.py build --release v0.19). Copy DCOLYMP and the new EP7MOD/LOOKS.BIN to the SD card, then hold OK while switching on to flash. Keep your own EP7MOD/BUNDLES.BIN (your saved looks). Full guide: README › Install.

Note: a BUNDLES.BIN that uses Blacks/Whites needs v0.19 firmware (older firmware ignores the whole file).

Only the E-P7 on firmware 1.1 is supported. If you enjoy it: buy me a coffee ☕

Caduceus v0.18 (early development)

Pre-release

@cakelesscoder cakelesscoder released this 02 Nov 04:04

Caduceus v0.18 (early development)

⚠️ Unofficial, experimental firmware modification. Bugs will appear and flashing can brick your camera or lose data. The author accepts no responsibility for any damage. Provided "as is", without warranty (Apache License 2.0 §7–8). Without the EP7MOD folder the camera is almost stock; the restore file returns it fully to stock 1.1.

What's new since v0.16

  • Cleaner look names on camera: the Film page and mono preset picker now show just the name (Velvia, Velvia*, Acros*) instead of Film: Velvia. Much nicer to scroll.
  • New looks: Cuban Neg (inspired by Osan's "Classic Cuban Neg" recipe, with CineStill-style bloom) and Atrophy (inspired by [Gx]Ace's Atrophy pack: decayed, industrial tones).
  • Faux IR: the former "Aerochrome" look, renamed honestly: an infrared-inspired false-colour look (the camera's hue range can't turn foliage fully red).
  • Provia and Superia 400 removed from the library (duplicates of the stock profile / Classic Neg).
  • Setup › Firmware shows a Caduceus row with the version (0.18).
  • Caduceus Control Panel: make, edit and share looks in your browser, with short share codes, undo/redo and reset; exports LOOKS.BIN.

Caduceus v0.16 (early development)

⚠️ Unofficial, experimental firmware modification. Bugs will appear and flashing can brick your camera or lose data. The author accepts no responsibility for any damage. Provided "as is", without warranty (Apache License 2.0 §7–8). Without the EP7MOD folder the camera is almost stock; the restore file returns it fully to stock 1.1.

Changes since v0.15

  • Stronger colour grain: Low/Medium/High are now ~4×/8×/12× stronger than before (colour profiles only; Monochrome grain is unchanged stock). Still on the subtle side at High, so it looks like real film rather than noise.
  • Firmware screen: Setup › Firmware shows a Caduceus row with the version (0.16).
  • One-press builder: double-click Build Caduceus (Windows).bat, Build Caduceus (Mac).command or build-caduceus-linux.sh. It builds the update and offers to copy it to your camera's SD card (it never overwrites your saved looks).
  • Clearer install and flashing guide in the README.

Everything from v0.15 is included: 29 colour film looks plus 10 mono presets, the in-camera look editor (Saturation/Hue/Light/Film/Extras), bloom ↔ clarity, WB shift, Art Effects, live-view preview, hidden log video (movie picture mode = Muted), XPan/21:9 stills, and a longer recording limit.

Install

No firmware files are attached (OM's licence forbids redistributing their firmware). Caduceus v0.15: first public release (early development)

⚠️ Unofficial, experimental firmware modification. Bugs will appear and flashing can brick your camera or lose data. The author accepts no responsibility for any damage. Provided "as is", without warranty (Apache License 2.0 §7–8). Remove the EP7MOD folder for near-stock behaviour; the restore file returns the camera fully to stock 1.1.

What's in it

  • Film simulations in the camera: 29 colour looks (Provia, Velvia, Classic Neg, Kodachrome 25/64, Portra 160/400, Ektar, Gold, CineStill 50D/800T, Vision3 250D/500T, Superia, Aerochrome-style IR, Cross Proc…), picked per Colour Profile slot on a new Film page in the stock colour wheel. Names show in Picture Mode.
  • Look editor: INFO cycles Saturation → Hue → Light → Film → Extras; the wheel follows the page; edits save back to the SD card.
  • Extras per profile: grain, bloom ↔ clarity, WB shift, Art Effects (Star Light, Pin Hole, Blur).
  • Mono film presets: Pan F, Acros, T-Max, SFX, Tri-X, HP5, Delta 3200, Sepia, Selenium, Cyanotype (INFO in the mono editor).
  • True log video: a log curve already hidden in the firmware, unlocked with movie picture mode = Muted.
  • XPan 65:24 and 21:9 stills: with matching live view, playback and XPAN/UW size labels.
  • Longer recording limit.

Install (no firmware files are distributed)

OM's licence forbids redistributing their firmware, so you build the update on your own computer:

  1. Download this release's source zip (below) and unzip it.
  2. python3 caduceus.py build --release v0.15 (Windows: py caduceus.py build --release v0.15). It downloads OM's official 1.1 file and checks every hash.
  3. Copy DCOLYMP and EP7MOD from out/ to the SD card. Hold OK and switch on to flash.

Full guide: docs/INSTALL.md. Only the E-P7 on firmware 1.1 is supported.
