In 2008, a group of people came together to build a unified calendar system for their community. In our initial discussions, we determined:

The Portland tech community needs a calendar that is...

  • comprehensive, covering events across a wide range of technology and geek culture interests
  • automatically updated from a variety of external sources, tapping into the work people are already doing on individual sites, Upcoming, the AboutUs wiki, etc.
  • editable: for events with no external group website, for fixing import errors, duplicated events, etc.
  • exported into every calendar format we can for easy publishing and reuse.
  • owned by the community: not dependent on the continued participation/support of any individual contributor or company

Over the course of many in-person code sprints, we built a Ruby on Rails application and deployed it at calagator.org, where it remains in active use.
