OpenScreamer 0.1.3

Choose a tag to compare

@cdebaecker cdebaecker released this 04 Nov 06:41

What's new

  • The Windows download is 4 times smaller. OpenScreamer.exe is now 21 MB instead of 110 MB (the zip 9 MB instead of 39 MB). It runs on a Godot build with only what the game uses: 2D, OpenGL and GDScript, without 3D, physics, Vulkan or Direct3D 12.
  • Text is laid out a little more simply on Windows: no kerning, and the help screen's Japanese lines break at spaces.
  • Nothing changes in the game itself; your saves and settings carry over.

If the Windows version doesn't start on your PC (very old graphics drivers without OpenGL 3.3), please report it; 0.1.2 still works there.

You still need your own disk image of the PC-9801 version of THE SCREAMER (.fdd, .fdi, .hdm, .d88, or a zip of one): OpenScreamer contains nothing from the original game.

The Linux and macOS builds still haven't been tried on a real machine; reports are welcome. macOS: the app isn't signed by Apple, so the first time, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.

What's new

  • No more strangers in the roster. The original disk images come with screamers already registered by whoever played them before ("ari-ken", "Google", "Ryo"). OpenScreamer now starts with an empty roster.
  • Rosters saved by 0.1.0 and 0.1.1 lose those leftover screamers too, but only those still exactly as they were on the disk. A screamer you played on stays.
  • Settings → Roster: "Restore the original disk's roster" is now Empty the roster.

Fixes for the French version, and a new disk image format.

What's new

  • French throughout. The interface (menus, settings, help, the opening notice) is now in French when the text is. The original's own English words are translated too: Yes / No, Push Space Key, the abilities screen's labels, Equipped, HIT, the demo's introduction.
  • Accents in the game's text. The game's 8 × 8 font has no accented letters, so OpenScreamer now makes them from the font's own letters. The French text has its accents back (é, è, à, ç...).
  • Anex86 .fdi disk images can be imported, as well as .fdd, .hdm, .d88 and zips of them.

Fixes

  • The keyboard hint on the registration screen showed \x02 instead of its arrow, in every language.
  • Spaces were too narrow in the PC-98 interface font.

You still need your own disk image of the PC-9801 version of THE SCREAMER: OpenScreamer contains nothing from the original game. If you already imported it with 0.1.0, there's nothing to do: your saves and settings carry over. To get the new French text, unzip the new translations next to the program (on macOS, in the data folder), replacing the old ones.

The Linux and macOS builds still haven't been tried on a real machine; reports are welcome. macOS: the app isn't signed by Apple, so the first time, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.

OpenScreamer 0.1.0

@cdebaecker cdebaecker released this 03 Nov 15:36

The first release of OpenScreamer: THE SCREAMER (Magical Zoo / ASCII, NEC PC-9801, 1986) on today's computers, from your own copy of the original disk.

What you need

  • A disk image of the PC-9801 version of THE SCREAMER: .fdd, .hdm, .xdf, .tfd, .d88, .d98, or a .zip holding one. OpenScreamer contains nothing from the original game. The first time you start it, it asks for the image and reads the game from it. Only the original release is accepted.
  • The game for your system (below).
  • English or French text (optional): OpenScreamer-translations-0.1.0.zip. Unzip it next to the program (on macOS, in the data folder); each download's README.txt says where.

Downloads

Windows (64-bit) OpenScreamer-0.1.0-windows.zip
Linux (x86-64, Steam Deck) OpenScreamer-0.1.0-linux.zip
macOS OpenScreamer-0.1.0-macos.zip
English and French text OpenScreamer-translations-0.1.0.zip

Good to know

  • macOS: OpenScreamer isn't signed by Apple, so macOS refuses it the first time. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway (on older macOS, right-click the app → Open).
  • Linux and macOS: these builds haven't been tried on a real Linux machine or Mac yet. Reports are welcome.
  • Android: not yet.
  • F12 shows the controls. Saves, a map, a journal, gamepad and touch controls are included. The way to floor 6 is open by default, as on the PC-88, since the PC-98 version as shipped can't be finished.

The translations are not covered by OpenScreamer's GPL: they are a derivative of the game's text, shared on the copyright holders' non-commercial terms (see the README inside).
