MetaEdit 1.11.0

MetaEdit's settings tab is rebuilt on Obsidian's own settings components, so it looks like the rest of Obsidian and shows up in settings search. In Edit aliases, typing [[ now suggests notes to link. The property prompts keep keyboard focus on Obsidian 1.13 and newer, and turning on Progress properties and the Kanban board helper together no longer shows an error notice.

Important

MetaEdit 1.11.0 requires Obsidian 1.13.4 or newer (up from 1.12.7). On Obsidian 1.12.7 to 1.13.3, MetaEdit stays on 1.10.3 until you update Obsidian.

To update, open Settings → Community plugins, click Check for updates, and then Update next to MetaEdit.

A new settings tab

The old settings tab was a stack of cards with gear buttons that opened tables, and an empty table showed only a bare "Name Type" header. Obsidian 1.13 added a way for plugins to describe their settings and let Obsidian draw them, and MetaEdit now uses it. That is why this release needs Obsidian 1.13.4.

MetaEdit's settings tab with three groups: Editing, Menu, and Automation

  • Settings are in three groups: Editing, Menu, and Automation.
  • Each list has its own page. List properties, Preset values, Hidden properties, Tracked task counts, and Boards show a count and open when you click them. A row only shows while its feature is on.
  • On the list pages, + adds an entry and × removes it. On Boards, each board shows its lanes under its name. Preset values keeps the card editor it had before.
  • Obsidian's settings search finds MetaEdit's settings. Search kanban and Kanban board helper comes up.
  • The labels say what each setting does. A few were renamed:
Before Now
UI Elements Right-click menu
Edit Meta menu Hide properties
Edit Mode: All Single, All Multi, Some Multi Edit mode: One value, List, List for chosen properties

Your settings carry over as they are. MetaEdit stores them the same way as before, so nothing is migrated. One thing works differently: on the list pages, you can't rename an entry anymore. Remove it and add it again.

The Boards page: the Editorial calendar board with lanes Ideas, Drafting, and Published, and the property it sets, status

Docs: Settings (#229).

Link suggestions in Edit aliases

Obsidian's aliases field has no link suggestions, so MetaEdit adds its own to Edit aliases. They never showed up: typing [[ turned the [[ into its own alias pill. Now [[ followed by a few letters suggests matching notes, Enter fills in the link, and a second Enter adds it as an alias.

The Edit aliases prompt with the alias Atlas and [[Read typed after it, with Reading list suggested below

Saving writes the alias as a link, such as - "[[Reading list]]" under aliases (#226).

Typing goes into the prompt again

On Obsidian 1.13 and newer, editing a YAML property or choosing New YAML property opened the prompt with focus on the type button instead of the field, so what you typed went nowhere. When editing a list, a leftover value autocomplete also caught Enter until you pressed Escape. The edit prompt now opens with focus in the value, and New YAML property opens with focus in the property name (#218).

No error notice when you turn on automations

With Progress properties on, turning on the Kanban board helper showed MetaEdit: (ERROR) a ProgressProperties automator is already attached., and the other way around showed the same notice for KanbanHelper. Nothing was wrong, and now no notice shows.

MetaEdit's warnings also said (ERROR). They now say (WARNING), such as the Kanban board helper's notice when a card's note doesn't have the board's property (#228).

Also in this release

  • The settings tab no longer starts with a "MetaEdit Settings" heading, and MetaEdit no longer writes "Loading MetaEdit" and "Unloading MetaEdit" to the developer console. Its informational messages now show only at the console's Verbose level (#223).

For contributors: a security sweep moved every dependency to its latest safe release and dropped the lockfile from 543 to 245 packages. pnpm and Dependabot now hold back releases younger than 7 days (#217, #219). Tests are now type-checked in CI (#224), and the live Obsidian end-to-end suite runs in CI on every pull request to master (#227). Releases now run on version 5 of the shared release workflows, and a release can be planned as a dry run (#221, #222, #225).
