@github-actions github-actions released this 27 Oct 20:54

This is an alpha build, cut straight from main with little soak. Expect rough edges and breaking changes. GitHub marks it "Latest" because it is what the default update channel offers while Atlas is in alpha; it is not offered on the Stable channel; see versioning.

Atlas is in alpha: expect bugs and breaking changes. Please report what breaks.

Added

  • Agent dock: a floating pill that messages your agents from any app. Press ⌃⌥Space (changeable in Settings → Agents → Agent dock) to open a small composer above whatever you are doing, type, press Enter, and the text goes to your agent, even with the Atlas window closed. It never takes the keyboard focus from the app you are in (on macOS it is a non-activating panel on every Space and over fullscreen apps). It picks the agent from the To menu, an @mention (@api, @feat-login, @claude), the one you last used, or the most recently active one, and asks when a mention matches several. The agent's last lines stream into the pill with Open in Atlas, and an agent that needs you raises a card. Voice, capture and approve/deny from the card are not in this version.
  • Capture: screenshots, screen recordings and GIFs from a hotkey, in any app. ⌃⌥3 captures the screen under the pointer, ⌃⌥4 drags a region (Space switches to a window; a magnifier and the pixel size follow the pointer), ⌃⌥5 picks a window, ⌃⌥6 records a region to mp4 (3-2-1 countdown, pause, stop, 10-minute limit) and ⌃⌥7 records a GIF (all changeable, with presets, in Settings → Capture; none is a macOS system key). The file is saved to ~/Pictures/Atlas Captures (or your folder), copied to the clipboard and shown as a quick card in the corner: Copy, Save As, Annotate, Send to agent (attaches it to the dock's composer, which sends the path), Reveal, Discard, drag it into Finder, Mail or Slack, or turn a recording into a GIF with a size estimate. Annotate opens an editor (arrow, rectangle, text, highlight, blur, crop) that saves a (edited) copy next to the original and never overwrites it. Settings → Capture shows the Screen Recording permission and the history. Atlas's own capture windows and the dock are never in the picture. macOS only for now; the first capture asks for Screen Recording and macOS applies it after a restart.
  • Open anything with atlas, no setup. atlas ., atlas <folder> and atlas <file> open it in Atlas Desktop (a file opens its project, then the file; the app is started if it is not running). atlas.yaml is now optional: in a folder without one, atlas dev (also --detach, --headless, --ci), atlas down and atlas mcp detect the services from package.json, Cargo.toml, pyproject.toml or go.mod in memory, print one line saying so and writing nothing; atlas init saves exactly that config. A subcommand always wins over a folder of the same name (atlas ./dev opens the folder); a typo like atlas devv still fails with "unrecognized subcommand" and the suggestion.
  • atlas -- <cmd…> runs a command as a service of this folder's stack. atlas -- bun dev is supervised like any service (logs in .logs/, port probe, restart from the TUI/Desktop/MCP) without touching atlas.yaml: it joins a running background runner live, or starts the stack in the background with it. Named from the command (bun-dev, de-duplicated).
  • atlas update updates system packages (Arch, Debian/Ubuntu, Fedora/openSUSE). It finds the owner with pacman -Qo, dpkg -S or rpm -qf, always reports installed and latest with --check, downloads the matching .pkg.tar.zst, .deb or .rpm, verifies its SHA-256 before asking for privileges, installs it through sudo (pkexec without a terminal) after a confirmation (--yes skips it) while holding the update lock, then refreshes skills and agent setups with the installed binary. The daily notice and exit banner fire for package installs and print the package manager's command (#144).

Changed

  • Capture: the region shot is taken the moment you release the mouse. No more Return after the drag. Turn it off in Settings → Capture → Screenshots → Capture when the mouse is released to adjust the selection first and confirm with Return. Capture is also lighter: the overlay freezes the screen from raw pixels instead of a PNG round trip through disk, the quick card is placed without listing every window, the loupe's colour readout is computed in Rust instead of decoding an image in the page on every pointer move, and GIF export opens the video once instead of once per frame and encodes screen recordings several times faster (same bytes out).
  • Menu-bar popover rebuilt to be compact and useful. One status line replaces the title and the two big Agents/Terminals cards ("1 needs you · 2 working · 3 running"), with quick actions beside it: new agent, show/hide the agent dock, settings, open Atlas. Below, attention comes first: agents waiting on you or blocked on an approval (one click jumps to their tab), then working agents with what they are doing, then running stacks with service health and Stop / Restart failed. Projects are grouped by repo, with worktrees nested under their project and named by branch (no more rows of identical "atlas"), running ones first, recents next, and the stopped ones collapsed behind Stopped (27); a search field appears when there are many. The terminal host version moved to a small footer.
  • Sending text to an agent terminal (agents.send, quick commands, atlas term send) now runs in Rust (agent_send), the same code the dock uses; the bytes written to the terminal are unchanged.
  • A new first-run welcome. The full-screen globe title sequence is replaced by a short deck drawn and animated in the app (SVG and CSS, no video): welcome, one file runs your stack, agents side by side, a worktree for every idea, then finding your projects. Arrow keys or Enter move through it, Esc skips. The welcome sound is gone with the sequence. The empty state without projects keeps the globe.
  • Atlas Desktop on Windows looks like a Windows 11 app. No native title bar or menu bar: Atlas draws its own minimize, maximize/restore and close buttons in the title row (the window keeps its shadow, resize borders and snap). The installer has Atlas artwork, icon, publisher and a Start menu folder.
  • Windows: lighter WebView2. Atlas's webviews (window, tray popover, embedded browser tabs) start without Edge's background networking, component updater, sync and crash uploader, and the window's webview drops to its low-memory mode while Atlas is minimized or in the tray. The menu-bar popover is built after the first frame instead of before it.
  • Windows and Linux: tab and window shortcuts follow Windows Terminal, Chrome and VS Code (Keyboard). Ctrl+Shift+T opens a terminal tab and Ctrl+Shift+W closes the tab everywhere, with a terminal focused too (Ctrl+T and Ctrl+W still work outside terminals, where in a shell they are transpose and delete-word); **Ctrl+Shift+** opens a terminal as in VS Code; **Ctrl+PgUp / Ctrl+PgDn** switch tabs; **Ctrl+B** toggles the sidebar (the left dock moved to Alt+Shift+B, the sidebar's old Alt+Shift+S is gone); reopen closed tab moved from Ctrl+Shift+T to **Alt+Shift+T**; **Ctrl+Q** quits Atlas (the tray's Quit, no extra confirm; Alt+F4 still hides to the tray) and **F11** toggles full screen. In a focused terminal Ctrl+[ and Alt+←/→ now reach the shell (Esc in vim, word motion in readline). On macOS ⌘T, ⌘W and ⇧⌘T are unchanged, and ⌃⇧\ opens a terminal there too.
  • Ctrl+Shift+W / ⇧⌘W no longer close every tab in the pane. They close the current tab, like Ctrl+W / ⌘W. "Close all tabs in the pane" has no default key (palette, tab menu and menu bar). If you had bound it yourself, your binding stays.

Fixed

  • Capture no longer brings Atlas forward, and the region shot is the screen you saw. Starting a capture (⌃⌥3/4/5) and dragging a region used to activate Atlas and raise its window over the app you were capturing: the capture windows were converted to non-activating panels after they were created, which AppKit honours for the style but not for the window server, so the first click on them activated the app. They are now non-activating panels before they are ever shown, and each one is checked right before it is ordered in (a window that cannot be made safe is not shown). ⌃⌥4 is also instant on a busy Mac: the region is cut from the frame frozen when the overlay opened, in memory, instead of a second screenshot taken after you let go (which captured whatever the screen looked like by then); the overlay windows are reused, the card appears before the file is read back, sound or history, and a capture key pressed during a save starts the next capture at once.
  • Windows and Linux: Atlas runs once. Opening it again (Start menu, taskbar, atlas desktop) brings the open window forward instead of starting a second app with its own set of WebView2 processes.
  • Windows: an installed Atlas no longer thinks it is a dev build. The amber "Dev build" line and paused updates were shown on every installed app.
  • Windows: no console windows flashing. Language-server installs and probes, the update check and hostd's "start the stack" ran console programs without hiding their window.
  • Windows: the omp logo was a black square in menus and tabs (its gradient pointed at a hidden copy of the mark).
  • Windows: the tray icon was a solid black dot. The notification area never tints icons, so the black macOS template showed as a disc; it now uses the full-colour Atlas icon. Also on Windows: "Reveal in File Explorer" instead of "Reveal in Finder", Windows fallbacks in the default font stacks (Segoe UI, Cascadia Mono, Consolas), Ctrl key hints instead of ⌘ glyphs in the sidebar, welcome and custom-agent texts, and no afplay call on notifications.
  • Windows: the embedded browser no longer swallows Atlas's shortcuts. With a browser tab focused, Ctrl+1…9, Ctrl+Tab, Ctrl+PgUp/PgDn, Ctrl+Shift+T/W, Alt+1…9 and your remaps run their commands (the forwarding macOS already had), while Ctrl+F, F5, Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V stay with the page. Linux browser tabs still take every key while focused.
  • Windows: F5, Ctrl+R, Ctrl+F, Ctrl+P and F12 no longer reload Atlas or open Edge UI. WebView2's browser accelerator keys are off for the app window and the tray popover (Atlas's own keymap still receives every key); embedded browser tabs keep them.
  • Updating Atlas Desktop can no longer leave you without the app. macOS: the old Atlas.app is kept as .Atlas.app.old until the new one is in place, and an update killed between the two renames is repaired by the next atlas or atlas desktop run; half-copied staging folders are removed on every failure (a full disk used to leave them). Linux: the previous AppImage is kept until the new one is installed and its version recorded, and restored if either fails. Windows: the install folder is moved aside before the installer runs and restored when the installer fails, leaves no app, or leaves a different version than the one wanted.
  • atlas update says when it left a linked Atlas Desktop alone. With the app linked to a dev build (atlas link --desktop) and the CLI not linked, one line now says the app was not updated and how to unlink.
  • Update checks and downloads survive a flaky network, and never answer with the wrong release. If the release feed cannot be read, a beta or alpha check now fails (and keeps the last known result) instead of quietly reporting "Stable", and a hiccup while confirming that the newest build is published no longer makes atlas update skip it for an older one: only an explicit "not found" does. Requests time out on connect and retry on transient errors; downloads have no 2-minute total cap any more (slow links and the large desktop bundle used to fail), they are stopped only when they stall, and curl resumes them.
  • A failed Desktop sync no longer leaves skills and agent hooks on the version the CLI was rolled back from. atlas update now refreshes skills, MCP entries and hooks only after the app followed, and when it did not, the restored previous binary refreshes them.
  • atlas update no longer overwrites a dev build, and no longer fails half way on permissions. A debug build or an atlas link binary is refused with the same rule the atlas dev prompt uses; before downloading it checks that the CLI's folder and the installed app are writable and names the one that is not, instead of replacing the CLI and rolling it back.
  • The update cache survives crashes, damage and an offline start. ~/.atlas/.update_check is written atomically, a damaged file keeps your "not now" answer, and a failed check is stamped so an offline atlas dev start no longer waits two seconds for the network every time (it retries after 30 minutes).
  • Atlas Desktop no longer says "Atlas is up to date" after an update that installed nothing. For Homebrew and system-package installs, atlas update reports managed (@@atlas managed …, and action managed or package in --check --json) and the app shows how to update instead.
