YLR-Auto 2.0.2
This release makes it easier to find a film when the disc label does not match TMDb's title. Settings, logs, caches and library layouts carry over unchanged.
Changes
- Similar titles. When a search finds nothing, YLR-Auto searches again with looser wording and lists what it finds. None is selected for you.
- Paste a TMDb link or ID. Put a TMDb page link, or
tmdb:10184, in Name and search to select that exact title. - Original titles. A result shows its original title when it differs, as in
Time Out (2018), original title Furlough. - Joined labels. A one-word label is also searched split into words, so
TIMEOUTalso searchestime out.
Automatic filing is unchanged, and still needs an exact name and a matching runtime.
See the README for how it works and the changelog for the full list.
Install
Debian 13, Ubuntu 24.04 or newer:
sudo apt install ./ylr-auto_2.0.2_amd64.deb
Other x86-64 distributions:
chmod +x YLR-Auto-2.0.2-x86_64.AppImage
./YLR-Auto-2.0.2-x86_64.AppImage
Known limits
- Splitting a label without capitals uses a built-in list of common title words, so some labels stay unsplit, and a misspelt one-word name still finds nothing.
- Short looser searches can list unrelated films, so check the title and poster before picking.
- Only the original title is shown, not every alternative name TMDb holds.
- Occasional
UnrecognisedNameconnection errors from TMDb are not fixed. Search again if one appears. - Both packages have been tested only on Debian 13.

YLR-Auto 2.0.0
YLR-Auto can now rip discs itself, from each optical drive, without opening MakeMKV's window. It runs makemkvcon, which comes with MakeMKV, so there is nothing new to install. Settings, logs, caches and library layouts carry over unchanged.
Changes
- Rip from each drive. Open scans a disc and shows its page, where you look it up on TMDb and tick titles. Rip then saves them, with a progress bar, percentage and time left, on any display server. All your drives can rip at once.
- Eject without a dialog in the way. These rips free the drive when they finish, so Eject the disc when a rip finishes works unattended. For rips in MakeMKV's own window, eject now keeps trying for ten minutes while a dialog holds the disc.
- Your TMDb pick carries through. Clicking a film ticks the title with its runtime and goes with the rip to filing. It files itself if its runtime agrees and automatic filing is on. The top search result alone never counts as a pick.
- Settings, Ripping. Choose what the drive button does, what inserting a disc does, how titles and progress look, how Stop and failures behave, and where rips go. Each drive can override the defaults, and three presets set the main choices together. Nothing changes until you choose otherwise, and by default nothing starts by itself.
- Per drive: a custom name, recent rips, and its next action in the tray menu.
- Alerts: choose which you get, with an optional sound.
- The AppImage can update itself from this version on, with AppImageUpdate. Copies of 1.1.1 and earlier need updating by hand once.
MakeMKV's window and YLR-Auto's monitoring of it are still there, for discs that need them. A drive held by a MakeMKV window cannot be opened in YLR-Auto until you close that disc or window.
See the README for how it works and the changelog for the full list.
Install
Debian 13, Ubuntu 24.04 or newer:
sudo apt install ./ylr-auto_2.0.0_amd64.deb
Other x86-64 distributions:
chmod +x YLR-Auto-2.0.0-x86_64.AppImage
./YLR-Auto-2.0.0-x86_64.AppImage
Known limits
- You choose titles, but audio and subtitle tracks follow the default selection rule in MakeMKV's own settings. Rip from MakeMKV's window to choose them for one disc.
- PAL discs usually run about 4% short of TMDb's runtime. Their titles may not be ticked by runtime, and such a rip waits for you instead of being filed automatically.
- Ripping was tested on DVDs on Debian 13. It has not been tested through Open with a Blu-ray or series disc, or against a real read error or an expired MakeMKV key. Please report anything wrong with these.
- Both packages have been tested only on Debian 13. Ubuntu 24.04 meets the .deb's version requirements, but has not been tested.
- The tray icon has been tested only on Cinnamon. Cinnamon needs
xapp-sn-watcher, and GNOME needs an AppIndicator extension. Without a tray, closing the window quits. - The AppImage uses software rendering.

YLR-Auto 1.1.1
A small wording fix. On a machine without MakeMKV, the window now says MakeMKV is needed to rip discs and how to get it, instead of "MakeMKV is not installed". The AppImage catalog's test reads that phrase as an error message.
See 1.1.0 for the move to Rust and its known limits.
Install
Debian 13, Ubuntu 24.04 or newer:
sudo apt install ./ylr-auto_1.1.1_amd64.deb
Other x86-64 distributions:
chmod +x YLR-Auto-1.1.1-x86_64.AppImage
./YLR-Auto-1.1.1-x86_64.AppImage
YLR-Auto 1.1.0
YLR-Auto is now written in Rust, as one program with no Python dependency. It opens in half the time and uses less than half the memory. Settings, logs, caches and library layouts carry over unchanged.
Changes
- The main window opens in about 127 ms instead of 254 ms, and idle memory falls from 113 MB to 48 MB. See Test results for how these were measured.
- The tray icon now uses StatusNotifierItem inside the app, so the separate XApp helper and GTK 3 are gone. The ripping percentage moves from the panel to the icon's tooltip.
- A new install follows the desktop's light or dark preference. An existing setting is kept, and Settings, Appearance still offers the dark grey theme.
- A corrupt MKV header now reads as an unknown runtime instead of failing with a memory error.
- The
.debis now built for amd64 instead of being architecture-independent.
Also includes the changes from 1.0.3 and 1.0.4, which had no release of their own: a large poster preview, each TMDb result's main actors, a log toggle, an About window, and a new icon. See the changelog.
Install
Debian 13, Ubuntu 24.04 or newer:
sudo apt install ./ylr-auto_1.1.0_amd64.deb
Other x86-64 distributions:
chmod +x YLR-Auto-1.1.0-x86_64.AppImage
./YLR-Auto-1.1.0-x86_64.AppImage
Known limits
- MakeMKV only shows a percentage while minimised, and only on X11. Otherwise YLR-Auto shows data written and speed.
- This Rust version has not yet been tested with a real TMDb search using a valid key, and its About window's video and sound have not been checked by eye. Please report anything wrong with either.
- The AppImage uses software rendering.
YLR-Auto 1.0.2
Adds a larger poster preview and a way to clear the poster cache.
Changes
- Rest the pointer on a TMDb result's poster for 2 seconds to see it at twice the size.
- Clear the poster cache from Settings, Cache. Posters download again when next needed.
Install
Debian 13, Ubuntu 24.04 or newer:
sudo apt install ./ylr-auto_1.0.2_all.deb
Other x86-64 distributions:
chmod +x YLR-Auto-1.0.2-x86_64.AppImage
./YLR-Auto-1.0.2-x86_64.AppImage
Known limits
- MakeMKV only shows a percentage while minimised, and only on X11. Otherwise YLR-Auto shows data written and speed.
- Both packages have been tested only on Debian 13. Ubuntu 24.04 meets the .deb's version requirements, but has not been tested.
- The AppImage uses software rendering, and does not include the IBus input module.
- Automatic filing has no undo, and can be turned off in Settings.
YLR-Auto 1.0.1
Filed films are now named by name and year, as Name (Year)/Name (Year).mkv, without the TMDb ID in the name.
Changes
- Name films
Name (Year)by default. - Add a setting at Settings, Naming, TMDb ID tag: none, folder, or folder and file. Without a tag, Jellyfin matches on the name and year.
- Recognise a film already in the library whichever tag style it was filed under, including when filing without a TMDb match.
- Keep same-named shows from different years in separate folders.
Files already in a library are not renamed.
Install
Debian 13, Ubuntu 24.04 or newer:
sudo apt install ./ylr-auto_1.0.1_all.deb
Other x86-64 distributions:
chmod +x YLR-Auto-1.0.1-x86_64.AppImage
./YLR-Auto-1.0.1-x86_64.AppImage
Known limits
- MakeMKV only shows a percentage while minimised, and only on X11. Otherwise YLR-Auto shows data written and speed.
- Both packages have been tested only on Debian 13. Ubuntu 24.04 meets the .deb's version requirements, but has not been tested.
- The AppImage uses software rendering, and does not include the IBus input module.
- Automatic filing has no undo, and can be turned off in Settings.
YLR-Auto 1.0.0
First public release of YLR-Auto, a Linux desktop companion for MakeMKV. It shows what MakeMKV and your optical drives are doing, then files finished rips into Jellyfin libraries, with names and posters from TMDb. MakeMKV is a separate program and is not included.
Install
Debian 13, Ubuntu 24.04 or newer:
sudo apt install ./ylr-auto_1.0.0_all.deb
Other x86-64 distributions:
chmod +x YLR-Auto-1.0.0-x86_64.AppImage
./YLR-Auto-1.0.0-x86_64.AppImage
Highlights
- Live status for each MakeMKV instance and drive, from the tray, with notifications.
- Optional automatic filing for films that match exactly one TMDb entry by name and runtime. Unattended filing never deletes a file.
- Detection of cancelled or failed rips, which are never filed automatically.
- VSCodium-style dark grey theme, with an option to follow the system theme.
Known limits
- MakeMKV only shows a percentage while minimised, and only on X11. Otherwise YLR-Auto shows data written and speed.
- Both packages have been tested only on Debian 13. Ubuntu 24.04 meets the .deb's version requirements, but has not been tested.
- The AppImage uses software rendering.
- Automatic filing has no undo, and can be turned off in Settings.
