Datanotes 3.6.0 warns about a table layout that makes a git repository of the vault grow fast. It only adds to 3.5: no operation, argument or setting goes away, and nothing is refused that 3.5 accepted.

Packs of rows

  • warnings: a new field of the answers of create_table, alter_table and check_table. It lists what is unwise in a table's layout, though allowed, each with a hint and a docs link.
  • pack_partition: the first warning. A table whose partition is wider than the periods of its packs, such as a year folder with packs per month, gets it. The folder of the open rows grows all period, and pack_rows empties it, so git stores a new version of that folder at every commit. In a simulation of one commit per row, a year of 10 rows a day took 21 MB of git history, against 1.8 MB with a folder per month. Choose the partition with git in mind explains it.

Before you update

  • Check your packed tables: check_table lists the tables with a wide partition. To change it, run unpack_rows, then alter_table with a partition as fine as the pack, then pack_rows.
