Nexus-CORE is a Linux desktop that explains itself and asks before it changes anything. Fedora 44, KDE Plasma or a light LXQt edition.

New

  • Install next to your Linux. The installer finds the other system, takes only the free space (30 GB or more), gives Nexus its own EFI and /boot partitions plus an encrypted system, and starts Nexus first afterwards. The other system's partitions are not touched.
  • nexus dualboot lists the other systems on the disk. sudo nexus dualboot add --apply adds them to the boot menu; sudo nexus dualboot 1 --apply restarts straight into one, once. Each entry hands over to the other system's own signed loader, so Secure Boot stays on.
  • Nexus Shop. Flathub, Fedora and RPM Fusion side by side, with what Nexus suggests and why. Flathub apps install and remove with one click; "Update everything" asks for the password once; every change is in nexus history.
  • Updates you can watch. Progress shows in the terminal and the Shop; an update is marked "applied" once you've restarted into it.
  • Safer installer. A disk with something on it is never erased without asking; only an empty disk is used whole.
  • The clock stays right: network time on, hardware clock in UTC.
  • nexus gamecheck --identifiers: what a game's anti-cheat can read about the machine.
  • First start fixed: typing works at the add-on question; with no answer, the login screen comes and it asks again next time.
  • Minimal: brightness keys with an on-screen bar.

Known limits

  • Dual boot is Linux next to Linux only (tested with Linux Mint 22.3 on one laptop). Needs UEFI, GPT and 30 GB free in one piece. Not next to Windows.
  • Next to another Linux, don't open Installation Destination: pressing Done there replaces Nexus's plan, and the installer stops with an error.
  • NVIDIA runs on the open driver. The first update downloads the whole system once (about 2.3 GB). Nexus's own messages are English only.
