scripts/settings-reference.shfrom rCommander's settings schema (crates/rc-engine/src/settings/), the settings dialog's pages and its texts; do not edit by hand. It cannot drift from what the program does: the same rows are the program's settings.
Every setting of the settings dialog (Configuration > Settings...), page by page in the
dialog's order, with its key, the values it takes and its default. The key is the name an AI
assistant uses with the MCP tools settings_get and settings_set (MCP server), and the
name an exported settings file carries.
-
Protected: only a person in the window changes it;
settings_setrefuses it for every caller, so an assistant never widens its own rights or chooses the programs and code that run. - Restart: it takes effect the next time rCommander starts.
| Setting | Key | Values | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Language | appearance.language |
One of Automatic (auto), English (en), Deutsch (de), Français (fr), Español (es) |
Automatic | The language of menus, dialogs and messages. Automatic uses the language of Windows when rCommander has it, English otherwise. Restart. |
| Theme | appearance.theme |
One of System (system), Light (light), Dark (dark) |
System | Light or dark; System follows Windows, also when it changes while rCommander runs. Each mode draws with its theme (Themes tab). |
| Themes of connections and WSL distributions | appearance.connection_themes |
On or off | On | A connection and a WSL distribution can each have a theme of their own for each mode (the connection in the connection manager, the distribution on the tab Themes): the panel - the list, the headers, the tabs - and its SSH or WSL terminal draw with it, so servers and distributions are told apart at a glance. Off: every panel draws with the window's theme; the connections and distributions keep theirs. |
| Show the function-key bar | appearance.function_key_bar |
On or off | On | The row of F3 to F8 at the bottom of the window; the keys work either way. |
| Menu bar | appearance.menu_bar |
On or off | On | The menu bar at the top of the window, opened with Alt and a menu's underlined letter. Without it every command keeps its key and its row in the command palette (Ctrl+Shift+P). |
| Mac look on macOS | appearance.macos_look |
On or off | On | On: macOS's greys for light and dark mode with the accent chosen in System Settings, San Francisco and Menlo as fonts, and a transparent title bar over the window. Off: the look rCommander has on Windows and Linux, with the system's title bar. The menus stay in the system's menu bar either way. Only on macOS. Restart. |
| Dialogs in windows of their own | appearance.dialog_windows |
On or off | On | When on, the dialogs open in windows of their own that you can move and resize; each opens where you left it. That is the connection manager, find files, multi-rename, compare/synchronize, the checksum results, the login-script editor and Lister, the smaller dialogs: backup, restore, export and import, properties, quick connect, network drives, pack and unpack, the checksum forms, the directory hotlist and Run command, the file operations: copy, move, new folder or file, delete, their questions and the progress window, and the small questions: an agent's call, host keys and certificates, the vault, quitting, an archive's password, a large download and synchronizing. Multi-rename, the smaller dialogs, the file operations and the questions (but synchronizing's, which waits only for its window) keep the main window waiting; beside the others you can work on in the main window. When off, they open over the main window. |
| Ask to restart when the graphics are lost | appearance.gpu_loss_notice |
On or off | On | When on and the graphics card loses its device (a driver reset, standby, a change of GPU), rCommander can no longer draw; a message box asks whether to restart it. Tabs and places are kept, transfers continue at the next start. When off, the window stays as it is until you close it. |

| Show Markdown files as a preview | viewer.markdown_preview |
On or off | On | Lister (F3) and Quick View (Ctrl+Q) show a .md or .markdown file formatted; 5 switches between the preview and the text. Off: such files open as text, and 5 still shows the preview. Images are never loaded, HTML in the file is shown as text, and only http, https and mailto links open, on a click. |
| Select and copy in the Markdown preview | viewer.markdown_select |
On or off | On | The mouse selects text in the preview, also across paragraphs, lists, tables and code; Shift+click extends, a double click takes a word, a triple click a line. Ctrl+A selects all, Ctrl+C copies the selection as plain text. Applies to files opened afterwards. |
| Largest picture shown at full detail (megapixels) | viewer.picture_megapixels |
A whole number from 4 to 256 | 32 | A picture with more pixels is scaled down to this many before it is shown, so a very large photo or scan opens without using gigabytes of memory; zoom and the status line still go by its own size. Higher is sharper when you zoom in. |
| Open as DOS text (code page 437) | viewer.dos_extensions |
File extensions without dots, separated by spaces | nfo diz |
File extensions without dots, separated by spaces. Lister (F3) and Quick View (Ctrl+Q) show such files in the DOS character set, with its box-drawing art, and without wrapping; a file with a byte-order mark, in UTF-16 or in UTF-8 beyond plain ASCII keeps its own encoding. In the viewer S switches to DOS and A back to ANSI. Empty: no file opens as DOS text. |
| Let the blocks of DOS art touch | viewer.dos_tight_lines |
On or off | On | DOS text - an .nfo, a .diz, or any file switched to DOS with S - draws its lines exactly as tall as the viewer font's full block, so the block characters of its art join without gaps, as in Total Commander's Lister. Off: its lines are as tall as any other text's. |
| Ctrl+wheel, Ctrl++ and Ctrl+- change the viewer's text size | viewer.text_zoom |
On or off | On | In Lister (F3) and Quick View (Ctrl+Q) the text, binary, hex and Markdown views get a step larger or smaller, from 6 to 72 points; Ctrl+0 goes back to the viewer font size. In the image view the same keys zoom the picture and Ctrl+0 fits it to the window. Off: Ctrl+wheel scrolls, and in Quick View Ctrl+Num+ and Ctrl+Num- select and deselect all as in the panels. |
| A changed text size | viewer.text_zoom_keep |
One of Applies to this viewer window only (window), Is saved as the viewer font size (setting) |
Applies to this viewer window only | This window only: the size stays with that viewer window and the files N and P step to, or with Quick View while its cursor moves; the next viewer opens at the viewer font size. Saved: every change is stored as the viewer font size, so every viewer opens at it, and Ctrl+0 stores the default 13. |
| Setting | Key | Values | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Left panel starts in | folders.left_start |
An absolute path | empty | An absolute folder; empty for the home folder. A folder that is missing at the start counts as empty. Restart. |
| Right panel starts in | folders.right_start |
An absolute path | empty | An absolute folder; empty for the home folder. A folder that is missing at the start counts as empty. Restart. |
| Quick search starts with | quick_search.keys |
One of Ctrl+Alt with letters (ctrl_alt), Alt with letters (alt), Letters alone (letters) |
Ctrl+Alt with letters | Ctrl+Alt with letters searches and letters alone go into the command line. With letters alone, typing searches; the command line then takes text after a click into it. |
| Quick search matches anywhere in a name | quick_search.anywhere |
On or off | Off | Off: a name must start with the typed text. * and ? work as wildcards either way. |
| Quick search tells upper from lower case | quick_search.case_sensitive |
On or off | Off | Off: report and Report match alike. |
| Quick search hides what does not match | quick_search.filters |
On or off | Off | On: the quick search shows only the files and folders that match, as the filter (Ctrl+S) does; Enter keeps it, Escape shows everything again. Off: it only moves the cursor to the match. |
| Enter opens archives | archive.enter_opens |
On or off | On | On: Enter on a .zip, .7z or .tar file shows its contents in the panel. Off: the system opens it. Ctrl+PageDown always opens an archive in the panel. |
| Archive decoder memory (MiB) | archive.decoder_memory_mib |
A whole number from 16 to 4096 | 256 | The most memory unpacking an .xz, .tar.xz or .7z file may set aside for its dictionary. A file whose header asks for more is refused before anything is reserved, so a crafted archive of a few bytes cannot take gigabytes. 256 MiB is more than any xz or 7-Zip preset uses. Counts for archives opened from now on. |
| Enter verifies checksum files | checksum.enter_verifies |
On or off | On | On: Enter or a double click on a .sfv, .md5, .sha, .sha1, .sha256, .sha512, .b3 or .blake3 file checks the files it lists. Off: the system opens it. Ctrl+Shift+F10 always checks it. |
| Num+, Num- and Shift+F2 select folders too | selection.include_folders |
On or off | Off | On: Num+ and Num- also select and deselect folders whose names fit the mask (*.* takes every folder), and Shift+F2 also selects the folders only one side has. A mask ending in \ always means folders only. |
| Space moves the cursor to the next entry | selection.space_moves_down |
On or off | On | On: Space selects the entry under the cursor and moves on to the next one, as Insert does. Off: the cursor stays on the entry. A folder is counted either way. |
| A click clears the selection (as in Explorer) | mouse.click_clears_marks |
On or off | Off | Off: a click in a file list only moves the cursor and the selection stays, as in Total Commander. On: a click also clears the selection, as in Windows Explorer. Ctrl+click and Shift+click select either way. |
| Drag tabs to reorder them | tabs.drag_reorder |
On or off | On | On: a tab dragged within its tab bar goes where it is dropped, as in Total Commander; a click still shows it, Escape cancels the drag. Off: a press on a tab only shows it. In the list of tabs (Ctrl+Shift+A) Ctrl+Up and Ctrl+Down move a tab either way. |
| A drive change goes to the other panel's folder | drives.follow_other_panel |
On or off | On | On: changing to the drive the other panel shows (drive bar, drive menu, or d: in the command line) opens the other panel's folder, as in Total Commander. Off: the folder this panel last showed on that drive, else the drive's root. |
| d: in the command line follows the other panel on the same drive too | drives.follow_on_own_drive |
On or off | On | On: d: in the command line opens the other panel's folder even when this panel is already on that drive, at another folder, as in Total Commander. The drive bar and the drive menu leave a panel on its own drive where it is. Works only while "A drive change goes to the other panel's folder" is on. |
| Sort names | sort.names |
One of Like Windows (Total Commander) (windows), Like Linux (byte order) (linux), By the panel's target (by_target) |
Like Windows (Total Commander) | Like Windows and Total Commander: upper and lower case alike, symbols before digits before letters, hyphens and apostrophes only between otherwise equal names. Like Linux: the byte order of ls in the C locale, capitals first. By the panel's target: Windows' order on this computer's drives, Linux' on SSH and FTP servers and inside WSL. |
| Sort numbers by their value | sort.numbers_by_value |
On or off | On | On: file2 comes before file10, as in Total Commander and the Explorer. Off: digits compare as characters, file10 before file2. |
| Setting | Key | Values | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| F10 | keys.f10 |
One of Closes dialogs, quits without one (close_and_quit), Closes dialogs only (close_dialogs), Does nothing (off) |
Closes dialogs, quits without one | With a dialog open, F10 closes it as Esc does; with none open it quits rCommander. In a terminal panel F10 belongs to the shell. |
| Always underline access keys | keys.underline_access_keys |
On or off | Off | On: the underlined letters of the dialogs' buttons always show. Off: they show while Alt is held, as in Windows. Alt with the letter presses the button either way; the letter alone does while a button or checkbox has the focus ring. |
| Show keys in context menus | keys.context_menu_shortcuts |
On or off | On | On: the menus rCommander draws - a tab's, the file list's own, the queue's - show each entry's key on the right, as Windows menus do. Off: the entries' names only. |
| The connection manager opens in its list, on the connection used last | connections.focus_list |
On or off | On | When on, Ctrl+F opens the connection manager with the keyboard in the list and the cursor on the connection you used last, so the arrow keys and Enter choose at once; a letter typed there goes into the filter. When off, the keyboard starts in the filter field. |
| Cmd works as Ctrl on macOS | keys.macos_cmd_as_ctrl |
On or off | On | On: Cmd does what Ctrl does in the keymap (Cmd+R refreshes, Cmd+Shift+P opens the command palette), Ctrl still works, and keys show with the Cmd symbol. Off: only Ctrl is Ctrl, a key pressed with Cmd is left to the system, and keys show with the Control symbol. Only on macOS. |
| Shortcuts | keys.overrides |
Pairs key=command, separated by spaces; key= takes a standard key away |
empty | Your changes to the standard keys, as the Shortcuts tab writes them: Ctrl+K=copy gives Ctrl+K the copy, F5= takes F5 away, Ctrl+1=theme:dark:nord-dark switches to the dark Nord theme. The standard keys: Keyboard shortcuts. Protected. |
| Setting | Key | Values | Default | Description |

| Default shell | terminal.default_shell |
A short name: letters, digits, ., _ and -
|
empty | The shell a new terminal session runs; when it is not installed, the first shell found. |
| Terminal follows the panel | terminal.follow_panel |
On or off | On | Turning to the terminal, or moving the panel while it shows the terminal, changes the shell's folder too - only while the shell waits at an empty prompt, never into a running program. |
| Panel follows the terminal | terminal.panel_follows |
On or off | On | Turning back to the files shows the folder the shell was last in. |
| Shell integration | terminal.shell_integration |
On or off | On | New shells (PowerShell, bash, zsh, cmd) report their folder and prompt to rCommander; without it neither direction follows. Applies to shells started from now on. |
| Warn when a login script types a secret without a password prompt | login_scripts.warn_secret_prompt |
On or off | On | The login-script editor marks a Send secret step whose step before does not wait for a password prompt: the secret would be typed into whatever waits there, a shell too, and could end up in its history. |
| End programs started in a terminal with it | terminal.end_programs_on_close |
On or off | On | On, closing a terminal - or rCommander - also ends what its shell started, such as ssh, a build or a window opened from it, so nothing keeps running unseen. Off, only the shell ends and programs started from it keep running. Windows; elsewhere closing the terminal hangs them up. |
| Ctrl+C copies selected text | terminal.copy_ctrl_c |
On or off | On | On, Ctrl+C copies the text selected in a terminal and clears the selection; with nothing selected it interrupts the running program as always. Off, Ctrl+C always interrupts; Ctrl+Shift+C copies either way. |
| Right click copies selected text | terminal.copy_right_click |
On or off | On | On, a right click copies the text selected in a terminal and clears the selection; with nothing selected it pastes (Windows). Off, a right click always pastes. |
| Copy text as soon as it is selected | terminal.copy_on_select |
On or off | Off | On, letting go of the mouse after selecting text in a terminal copies it at once. Off, selected text is copied with Ctrl+C, Ctrl+Shift+C or a right click. |
| Ctrl+V pastes text | terminal.paste_ctrl_v |
On or off | On | On, Ctrl+V pastes the text on the clipboard into a terminal; with no text on it - an image, say - Ctrl+V goes to the running program, which may paste the image itself. Off, Ctrl+V always goes to the program; Ctrl+Shift+V and a right click paste either way. |
| Programs may copy to the clipboard | terminal.osc52_copy |
On or off | On | On, a program in a terminal - also on a server you are connected to - may put text on the clipboard (OSC 52), as Claude Code does with what you select in it. Programs can never read the clipboard this way. Off, such copies are dropped. |
| Shift with the mouse selects text | terminal.shift_selects |
On or off | On | On, holding Shift while you select with the mouse selects text in the terminal even when a program such as Claude Code or vim takes the mouse; Ctrl+C or a right click then copies it. Off, the mouse always goes to such a program. |
| Ctrl+Alt+V pastes an image as a file path | terminal.paste_image |
On or off | On | On, the key (Ctrl+Alt+V unless changed in Shortcuts) saves the clipboard's image as a PNG file where the terminal's program can read it - the temp folder, the same file under /mnt for WSL, /tmp on an SSH server, uploaded without asking - and pastes its path, for Claude Code and other programs that read images from a path. The files are removed when the terminal closes. Off, the key does nothing. |
| Most agent keys offered per login | ssh.agent_max_keys |
A whole number from 1 to 20 | 5 | How many keys of the SSH agents one login offers, the connection's own key first. A server counts each key against its limit of tries and learns every key offered (1-20). Protected. |

A whole number from 1 to 16 | 4 | How many copies and moves run at the same time altogether; a drive on this machine always takes one at a time. |
| Retries after a lost connection | transfers.retry_count |
A whole number from 0 to 10 | 3 | How often a copy or move to or from a server tries again when the connection breaks, each time continuing the file where it stopped. Then the job pauses and waits for Resume; 0 pauses at once. |
| First wait before a retry (seconds) | transfers.retry_delay_secs |
A whole number from 1 to 300 | 5 | How long a transfer waits before its first retry after a lost connection; each further wait is twice as long. |
| Ask before quitting while transfers run | app.confirm_quit_with_transfers |
On or off | On | Quitting with F10, the window's close button or Alt+F4 while copies, moves or other jobs run or wait asks first. The queue is kept and continues at the next start either way. |
| Delete for good where there is no recycle bin | delete.permanent_without_trash |
On or off | Off | Servers, network shares and WSL folders have no recycle bin. When on, F8 and Delete there ask to delete for good, as Shift+Delete does. When off, they delete nothing there and say so; Shift+Delete deletes for good. |
| F7 offers the name under the cursor | mkdir.prefill_cursor_name |
On or off | On | When on, the new folder dialog starts with the name of the file or folder under the cursor, selected, so typing replaces it. When off, it starts empty. |
| One queue job per file or folder | queue.one_job_per_item |
On or off | On | When on, copying, moving or deleting several files and folders puts each of them into the queue as a job of its own, in the order selected, so each can be paused, moved or cancelled on its own; an answer for all still holds for all of them. When off, the whole selection is one job. |
| Queue in a window of its own | queue.window_own |
On or off | On | When on, Ctrl+Shift+Q opens the queue in a window of its own that you can move, resize and leave open while you work on in the main window; it shows each running job's file, progress, speed and time left. When off, the queue opens over the main window. |
| Jobs listed under the panels | queue.strip_rows |
A whole number from 1 to 50 | 5 | How many jobs the background bar under the panels lists, in the order of the queue window (Ctrl+Shift+Q), which shows them all. |
| Show jobs that run at once in the queue | queue.show_at_once |
On or off | On | When on, the queue window (Ctrl+Shift+Q) also lists the copies, moves and deletes confirmed with OK, which run at once rather than wait in the queue: a group of their own at the top, marked "Runs at once", paused, resumed and cancelled like the other jobs. When off, the window lists only the jobs queued with F2 or into a list; the bar under the panels still shows every job. |
| Show the speed of all running jobs together | queue.total_speed |
On or off | On | When on, the queue window shows under its list how many jobs run and their speed together once more than one runs, beside the selected job's line. When off, only the selected job's speed shows. |
| Leave out the lane column while all jobs share one lane | queue.hide_single_lane |
On or off | On | The lane column of the queue window names what a job waits for: Local for the local drives, a server or share by its name, or Runs at once. When on, the column is left out while every job listed is in the same lane, so the paths get its room. When off, it always shows. |
| Packing, checksums, sync and multi-rename run at once | queue.tools_at_once |
On or off | On | When on, packing, unpacking, creating and checking checksums, splitting and combining files, synchronizing folders and multi-rename start at once, even while a copy to the same drive is running, as copies confirmed with OK do; the queue window lists them as running at once. When off, they go into the queue and wait behind the jobs before them. |
| Look up FTP links when listing | ftp.resolve_links_in_listing |
On or off | Off | On: an FTP folder's listing asks the server what each link points to (up to 64 links, one or two requests each) and shows them last. Off: links show at once and are looked up when you enter, open or copy one; a link to a folder then shows as one. For connections made after the change. |
| Upper and lower case on SFTP servers | sftp.case_sensitivity |
One of Detect for each server (auto), Different names (Linux, Unix) (sensitive), One name (Windows, macOS) (insensitive) |
Detect for each server | Whether an SFTP server takes Data and data for one name, as a server on Windows or macOS does. Detect: rCommander asks the server once when it connects, without writing anything. It decides whether copying a folder into itself under another case is refused and whether a rename that only changes the case goes through a temporary name. For connections made after the change. |

| Run plugins | plugins.enabled |
On or off | On | Off: no plugin runs, and the built-in viewer shows every file. The plugins stay installed and keep their own switches. Protected. |
| Failures before a plugin is suspended | plugins.crash_limit |
A whole number from 1 to 10 | 3 | A plugin that crashes, hangs or runs out of memory this many times within five minutes is suspended until you resume it on this page (1-10). Protected. |
| Largest text a viewer plugin may write (MiB) | plugins.viewer_output_limit_mib |
A whole number from 1 to 4096 | 256 | A viewer plugin's text output stops at this size (1-4096 MiB); the viewer shows what came so far. Protected. |
| Show a viewer plugin's text in colour | plugins.viewer_token_colors |
On or off | On | A viewer plugin can show a file as coloured text, as an editor does - keys, strings, numbers and comments each in their own colour. The colours are the theme's, in light and in dark; the plugin only says what each part is. Off: the same text without colour. The hex and binary views never show colour. Protected. |
| Extensions given to a plugin | plugins.associations |
Pairs extension=plugin id, separated by spaces |
empty | Pairs such as csv=<plugin id>, separated by spaces: that plugin shows the extension, ahead of what the plugins claim. Built-in formats come first. Empty: the plugins' own claims. Protected. |
| Development mode: accept unsigned plugins | plugins.development_mode |
On or off | Off | For plugin authors: unsigned packages can be installed and run, marked as unsigned everywhere. Leave it off otherwise - a signature is what tells you who made a plugin. Protected. |
A plugin's own settings are declared in its manifest and stored as plugin.<id>.<key>,
protected like these; they are changed on the tab Installed with the plugin selected. The
bundled viewers' settings are described in Plugins.

| Export the settings | exchange.export.settings |
On or off | On | Whether the next export starts with the settings ticked: every setting of this dialog, the protected ones too. The MCP token, the vault and the window positions are never exported. |
| Export the connections | exchange.export.connections |
On or off | On | Whether the next export starts with the connections ticked: their folders, hosts, users, key paths and login scripts. Passwords and keys go with them only when you tick them in the export. |
| Export the trusted host keys and certificates | exchange.export.trust |
On or off | On | Whether the next export starts with the SSH host keys and FTPS certificates you trusted ticked. |
| Export the hotlist and tabs | exchange.export.hotlist |
On or off | On | Whether the next export starts with the directory hotlist and the folder tabs ticked. Places on a server or inside an archive are not exported. |
| Encrypt exports | exchange.export.encrypted |
On or off | On | Whether the next export starts encrypted with an export password of its own. Each export keeps the choice it was made with. Protected. |
| Automatic backups to keep | backup.keep |
A whole number from 1 to 1000 | 10 | After each backup into the backup folder, the oldest backups with a generated name beyond this number are deleted. Backups you named yourself are never deleted. Protected. |
| Setting | Key | Values | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Check for updates by itself | update.check_enabled |
On or off | On | A check asks the release host for one public file per channel, with the user agent rCommander/<version> and nothing else: no cookie, no installation id, nothing about the system or its use. The host sees the address, the time and the version. Check now always works. Protected. |
| Hours between checks | update.check_interval_hours |
A whole number from 1 to 168 | 24 | The first check comes a few minutes after the start, then one every so many hours (1 to 168). Protected. |
| Channel | update.channel |
One of Stable (stable), Beta (beta) |
Stable | Stable offers releases only; beta offers pre-releases too and the release that follows them. Until you choose, the channel of the running version applies. Nothing older than the running version is ever offered. Protected. |
| Update source | update.source |
An https:// folder serving the update manifests; empty for the official releases |
empty | Empty for the official GitHub releases. A mirror is an https:// folder serving rcommander-update-stable.json, rcommander-update-beta.json and the packages below it; its manifests are checked against the key built into rCommander all the same. Protected. |
| Proxy for updates | update.proxy |
Empty for the system's proxy, direct, or http(s)://host:port without a login |
empty | Empty for the system's proxy (the Windows Internet options, HTTPS_PROXY and NO_PROXY), direct for none, or http://host:port. No user name or password: a proxy that asks for a login is not supported; copy the download address instead. Protected. |
| Show what is new after an update | update.whats_new_after_update |
On or off | On | The first start after an update says so once, with the notes of the new version. Protected. |
| Install updates by themselves | update.auto_install |
One of Off (off), When quitting (on_quit), When idle (when_idle) |
Off | Off: you install. When quitting: a new version is downloaded in the background and installed as rCommander ends; the next start runs it. When idle: also restarts into it once nothing happened for the minutes below - no input, no job in the queue, no terminal or SSH session, no dialog. A version whose install failed is never installed by itself again. Protected. |
| Minutes without input before an idle update | update.idle_minutes |
A whole number from 5 to 240 | 30 | How long nothing may happen before "when idle" restarts into the update (5 to 240). Protected. |
| Days to keep the database copy after an update | update.backup_retention_days |
A whole number from 0 to 3650 | 14 | Before every update the database is copied; after a proven update only the newest copy stays, and after these days it goes too. 0 keeps it for good. Protected. |
