v1.4.1
A hotfix for 1.4.0. Thanks to u/moosedude451 for the report that started it.
Fixed
- Auto-lock stays Auto-lock. Opening bottom or top Recents switched AYN's Focus Mode to a fixed lock on the bottom screen, and you had to set it back to Auto-lock in AYN's settings every time. Recents now hands the controller back exactly as it was, Auto-lock included.
- Swapping RetroArch no longer locks the controller focus. 1.4.0 moved the controller focus along with RetroArch on every swap (experimental). That caused the lock and wasn't needed, so it's gone.
- Bottom Recents shows above AYN's panel. Recents could open completely hidden behind AYN's assistant panel on the bottom screen. The panel now behaves like any other window there: Recents covers it, closing Recents without picking anything brings it back, and opening an app parks it behind its own card. AYN's button always brings a parked panel back with one press, and closing its card closes the panel just like AYN's button does.
Changed
- Back Button Hero no longer moves apps or the controller on its own. 1.4.0 moved the other app back after a swapped app was closed (for example Companion back below ES-DE). Apps now only change screens when you swap them, and the controller focus only changes when you ask for it.
v1.4.0
I heard you, and I gotcha. Enjoy this release.
Frontend compatibility
- ES-DE Companion and NeoStation: their bottom screen steps aside while you use another app there, and comes back from its own card in bottom Recents.
- Cocoon keeps its bottom screen running out of sight, so its top screen stays in the dual-screen layout.
- Swap a game away and quit it, and the other app returns to its screen, so ES-DE and Companion end up where they started.
- RetroArch keeps the real controller after a swap. The controller focus now follows RetroArch automatically (experimental).
- iiSU isn't supported yet; Back Button Hero leaves it alone instead of fighting it.
A new bottom Recents
- Looks and feels like the system's own Recents, with real app previews and the matching light or dark theme.
- Navigate both Recents with the D-pad, including Screenshot and Close all.
- Close all also clears apps locked in the launcher.
- Optionally list the apps from both screens.
- Frees its memory as soon as it closes instead of holding on to the last view until the next open.
Smoother swaps
- Hold-to-swap moves the running apps instead of restarting them, so games keep their state.
- Picking an app in Recents opens it on the screen where Recents is open.
Also new
- Active App Control shortcut: assign it to any Back + button or D-pad direction to minimize the app in front (like swiping up) or force-close it instantly, on the top screen, the bottom screen, both, or ask each time with a small controller-friendly prompt. Force-Close does not save anything for you, so unsaved progress can be lost.
- Pause shortcut: hold two buttons (L2 + R2 by default) to switch Back Button Hero off, for example when an emulator needs Back, and hold again to resume.
- Per-app exceptions: choose which gestures and shortcuts each app keeps for itself.
- Redesigned settings with grouped pages, plus defaults and unbind per page with a preview of every change.
v1.3.0
Back + D-pad shortcuts
Hold Back and press a D-pad direction for quick shortcuts. Your game keeps running and doesn't notice. Out of the box, up and down set the brightness and left and right set the volume.
New actions
For the shoulder buttons and the D-pad:
- Volume and brightness, for one screen or both
- Screenshot of the top screen, the bottom screen, or both
- Controller focus: move the controller to the other screen with one press
Also new
- Unbind optionals clears all shortcuts at once.
- If you're updating, your existing shortcuts stay the way you set them.

v1.2.0
Improved app closing
Swiping an app away in the switcher (or "Close all") now really closes it. The task is removed from Recents and the app is force-stopped, including apps running a foreground service, which the old method could not stop. This uses the Thor's own system service, so there's still no root, Shizuku or PC required.
If the system service isn't reachable (for example with "Force SELinux" switched on), the switcher falls back to the previous behavior.
