First release of Visual App Editor: a visual editor for Flutter (and React / React Native) UIs that edits your real source code.

VS Code extension: devcentr.visual-app-editor on the Visual Studio Marketplace, or install visual-app-editor-0.1.0.vsix below with code --install-extension visual-app-editor-0.1.0.vsix.

What's in 0.1.0

Desktop editor

  • Open a Flutter project and edit pages visually with source round-trip; the toolbox is generated from Material, Cupertino and third-party packages; in-process preview; flutter run with hot reload on save.
  • Framework-neutral core, a headless JSON-RPC editing service, and Dart and React / React Native language adapters; the desktop app is a client of the service.
  • Device mode switcher (phone / tablet / desktop / web).
  • Project file visual_app_editor.sdl (the older widget_bench.sdl is still read).

IDE plugins

  • IntelliJ IDEA / Android Studio 2026.2+ (visual-app-editor-intellij-0.1.0.zip, install from disk): tool window with widget tree, properties, toolbox, device switcher and wireframe; undoable edits via the service.
  • VS Code 1.100+: Widget Tree view and Inspector (properties, toolbox, device switcher); each edit is one undo step.
  • New document/sync protocol method so editors push unsaved buffer text.

Fixes

  • Adapter process failures are reported (error -32040 with the adapter's stderr) instead of showing an empty page list.
  • Empty property fields no longer show type names such as Color; only real defaults appear as hints.
