@dezaetterg dezaetterg released this 05 Nov 13:04

English version

TakeWeb 0.1.1 focuses on memory consumption and tab lifecycle management.

Changes
Memory allocation: The global allocator is now mimalloc instead of glibc malloc to remove heap fragmentation during long sessions.
Lazy tab loading: Restored tabs and links opened in the background initialize as widget stubs. WebKitWebProcess and Bubblewrap sandbox instances spawn only after the user selects the tab.
Tab discarding: Deep hibernation unparents the WebView from the container, terminating the child WebProcess. URL, page title, and scroll position are preserved.
Active process limit: An LRU scheduler maintains a maximum of 4 concurrent live rendering processes. Tabs with active audio playback are exempt from eviction.
On demand scripts: Reader mode and page translation scripts run on demand instead of being injected into every frame at startup.
Cache boundaries: SQLite cache size is clamped to 2 MB per connection. WebKit cache model is set to DocumentBrowser, and BFCache is disabled.
Benchmarks: Added an automated test suite and published reproducible PSS memory data in BENCHMARKS.md.
Memory usage (Linux x86_64, PSS via smaps_rollup)
1 active tab: 512 MiB
5 tabs (1 active, 4 lazy): 305 MiB
5 tabs (all visited, LRU cap): 1063 MiB
10 tabs (all visited, LRU cap): 793 MiB

4 lazy): 305 MiB
LRU): 1063 MiB
LRU): 793 MiB

@dezaetterg dezaetterg released this 04 Nov 10:43

First public Beta release of TakeWeb!

Key Features:

  • Offline Neural Translation: Built-in Mozilla Bergamot WASM engine. Translate full pages locally without sending data to Google or DeepL.
  • Privacy & Anti-Fingerprinting: Canvas/WebGL masking, WebRTC leak protection, strict ITP, and URL tracking parameter removal. Passes EFF Cover Your Tracks.
  • Memory Manager: Custom scheduler that suspends background tabs (10 tabs = ~610MB PSS, compared to Chrome's 2.2GB+).
  • NVIDIA + Wayland Fix: Automatically uses Xwayland workaround for NVIDIA proprietary drivers to ensure smooth 60+ FPS scrolling.
  • Native Linux Integration: Embedded icon theme (works on GNOME, KDE, Hyprland), PWA mode (--app=<URL>), MPRIS support, Reader Mode, and Split View.

Packages attached:

  • TakeWeb-0.1.0-x86_64.AppImage (Universal, just chmod +x and run)
  • takeweb_0.1.0_amd64.deb (Debian/Ubuntu/Mint)
  • takeweb-0.1.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz (Portable)
  • SHA256SUMS (Checksums)

Note: This is an early Beta. For Arch and Fedora users, please use the PKGBUILD and .spec files provided in the source repository.
