Installation

Requirements (every player)

  • Windows 10 or 11 (with .NET Framework 4.8, included in Windows 10 and 11).
  • Transport Fever 3, up to date. Every player needs the same game version, the same mods and the same MPFever version.
  • Steam running.

Installing

  1. Close Transport Fever 3.
  2. Download MPFever-<version>.zip from the releases page.
  3. Extract the archive anywhere, for example on your Desktop. Keep the folder structure (MPFever.exe, winhttp.dll, the mod folder...).
  4. Start MPFever.exe. It finds the game through Steam, installs the mod and enables it. Its log window shows « Mod installed in ... ».
    • If Windows SmartScreen says « Windows protected your PC », click « More info », then « Run anyway ».

Always start Transport Fever 3 through MPFever.exe when you want to play together. MPFever.exe starts the game itself. Started normally from Steam, the game is a normal solo game and MPFever does nothing.

A game not installed through Steam is supported too: MPFever finds its savegames once the game has shown its multiplayer page.

Updating

MPFever updates itself:

  • At start, before the game starts, it asks GitHub for the newest release, installs it, and starts again. Your mpfever_settings.txt and logs are kept.
  • While you play, it checks every 30 minutes. A newer version found then is installed when you close the game.
  • A dedicated server updates once nobody is connected, or at once while it is stopped. A server updated while it ran starts again the way it was running.

To be asked first, write autoupdate=ask in mpfever_settings.txt (next to MPFever.exe). autoupdate=0 turns the check off. Remember that every player needs the same version: a player on another version is refused, with a message saying which version the host runs.

What MPFever changes on your PC

  • It copies winhttp.dll into the game's folder. The game loads it by itself at start, the way well-known mod loaders work. It passes every network call of the game on to Windows' own winhttp.dll unchanged. It only does something when the game was started by MPFever.exe. It lets MPFever synchronise the game's own construction tools precisely.
  • It writes steam_appid.txt in the game's folder, so that the game can be started directly.
  • It adds the mod to the game's default mod list in settings.lua (a backup is kept as settings.lua.bak_mpfever).
  • It installs the mod's files in your Transport Fever 3 user mods folder.

Network connections: the addresses you join (or the Steam invitation you accept); GitHub, to check for updates; your router, to open the session's port when you host (UPnP or NAT-PMP, upnp=0 to disable); and api.ipify.org when you host, to learn your public IP address for invitations (lookupip=0 to disable).

Uninstalling

  1. Close the game.
  2. Delete winhttp.dll and steam_appid.txt from the game's folder (the one with TransportFever3.exe). They stay there until you delete them.
  3. Delete the folder mods\mpfever_1 in your Transport Fever 3 user folder.
  4. Delete the MPFever folder.

Settings

The launcher has a ⚙ Settings window, in every language of the game:

  • Game settings, chosen by the host and sent to every player.
  • Your own settings: smooth pacing, slow PC mode, detailed logs, automatic update, UPnP, public IP lookup.

They are stored in mpfever_settings.txt next to MPFever.exe.
