@github-actions github-actions released this 07 Sep 07:53

Blip is a menu bar utility that finds your mouse cursor. Press a hotkey or double-tap a modifier key, and the cursor position lights up.

What changed since 0.2.1

  • The effect lasts as long as you want it to. It used to end after a fixed 1.2 seconds, which is a guess that holds on a laptop screen and not on a projector. Settings now offers 0.1 to 5.0 seconds in tenths, and an option to keep it up until you use the pointer. That one ends when the cursor is moved and then set down, or on a click of any mouse button
  • The About panel links out. The app's site and its author are now clickable

Install

brew install --cask dominion525/tap/blip-cursor

Or download Blip-0.3.0.zip or Blip-0.3.0.dmg and move Blip.app into Applications. The app is signed with a Developer ID certificate and notarized, so it opens without a Gatekeeper warning.

Replacing an installed copy in Applications keeps its settings and the Input Monitoring permission.

Requires macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon. Intel Macs are not supported.

brew install --cask dominion525/tap/blip-cursor

Blip is a menu bar utility that finds your mouse cursor. Press a hotkey or double-tap a modifier key, and the cursor position lights up.

What changed since 0.2.0

  • Updates actually arrive. 0.2.0 announced itself with a version the updater could not compare against the installed one, so it would never have offered anything. Fixed, and verified end to end
  • The menu reads by what each item does. Check for Updates now sits with Restart, since both put a different copy of the app on screen, rather than with Settings and About

Install

brew install --cask dominion525/tap/dominion525-blip

Or download Blip-0.2.1.zip or Blip-0.2.1.dmg and move Blip.app into Applications.

Running 0.2.0? Blip will not offer this update to you, for the reason above. Download it here, or run brew upgrade.

brew install --cask dominion525/tap/dominion525-blip

Blip is a menu bar utility that finds your mouse cursor. Press a hotkey or double-tap a modifier key, and the cursor position lights up.

What changed since 0.1.1

  • Blip updates itself. The status bar menu has a Check for Updates item. When a newer version is out, Blip offers it, verifies the download against its signing key, and swaps itself for it
  • Install with Homebrew. brew install --cask dominion525/tap/dominion525-blip
  • A disk image to drag from. Releases now carry a .dmg next to the .zip, with the app and a link to Applications side by side

Install

Download Blip-0.2.0.zip or Blip-0.2.0.dmg, and move Blip.app into Applications. The app is signed with a Developer ID certificate and notarized, so it opens without a Gatekeeper warning.

Replacing an installed 0.1.x in Applications keeps its settings and the Input Monitoring permission.

Requires macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon. Intel Macs are not supported.

brew install --cask dominion525/tap/dominion525-blip

Blip is a menu bar utility that finds your mouse cursor. Press a hotkey or double-tap a modifier key, and the cursor position lights up.

What changed since 0.1.0

  • Restart from the menu. The status bar menu has a Restart Blip item above Quit. It quits and launches the app again, keeping the hotkey and the Input Monitoring permission
  • An app icon that sits with the others. The icon now rests on a light gray rounded square, so it no longer floats among the plated icons in Launchpad, Finder, and the Dock. The About panel keeps the drawing alone, black in light mode and white in dark mode
  • See the effects before you pick one. The README shows a recording of each of the four effects, and a Japanese README is available at README.ja.md

Install

Download Blip-0.1.1.zip, unzip it, and move Blip.app into Applications. The app is signed with a Developer ID certificate and notarized, so it opens without a Gatekeeper warning.

Replacing an installed 0.1.0 in Applications keeps its settings and the Input Monitoring permission.

Requires macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon. Intel Macs are not supported.

Blip is a menu bar utility that finds your mouse cursor. Press a hotkey or double-tap a modifier key, and the cursor position lights up.

This is the first release.

Install

Download Blip-0.1.0.zip, unzip it, and move Blip.app into Applications. The app is signed with a Developer ID certificate and notarized, so it opens without a Gatekeeper warning.

Requires macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon. Intel Macs are not supported.

Triggers

Both are configured in the settings window.

Hotkey ⌥⌘Z by default. Click the field and press the keys you want
Modifier double-tap Left Control by default. Left and right keys are told apart,
so the right Control can stay free

Effects

Spotlight Dims the screen and cuts a ringed hole around the cursor
Zoom A hole the size of the screen shrinks onto the cursor
Flash The ring blinks and ripples spread out from the cursor
Focus Lines Manga-style speed lines point at the cursor and jitter across three frames

While the effect is visible it follows the cursor, and the apps underneath stay clickable. It hides itself after 1.2 seconds. With several displays it appears only on the display holding the cursor, and the others are dimmed.

Permissions

The hotkey needs no permission. The modifier double-tap reads key events to tell left from right, which needs Input Monitoring. macOS asks on first launch, and the settings window shows the current state until it is granted.

  • A settings window for the hotkey, the double-tap key, the effect, and launch at login
