Doom 1, Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, Heretic, Hexen 1, Strife, HacX, Chex Quest 1 & 2:

GZDoom supports all Doom-engine games as shown above and most Doom mods rely on GZdoom in order to run correctly.

The Chocolate Doom link above also has download links for Crispy Heretic, Crispy Hexen, and Crispy Strife.

Regarding Mr. Icarus' video, if you plan on playing custom levels for any of the other Doom-engine games shown above, you will additionally need heretic.wad, hexen.wad, hexdd.wad, strife1.wad (or sve.wad), hacx.wad, chex.wad, and/or chex2.wad to play custom levels for their respective games. Place these IWADs in the same folder as GZDoom's executable that Icarus does for the Doom and Doom 2 IWADs.

Zandronum is a multiplayer fork of GZDoom, so follow the same steps that Mr. Icarus uses for GZDoom in order to set up Zandronum.

Although hexdd.wad is classified as an IWAD by GZDoom, the file hexdd.wad cannot be run by itself because it is Hexen's official expansion pack called "Deathkings of the Dark Citadel". You must place both hexen.wad and hexdd.wad in the same folder as GZDoom's executable that Icarus does for the Doom and Doom 2 IWADs. Open GZDoom as normal, then select Deathkings of the Dark Citadel from the IWAD selection menu.

Strife: Veteran Edition requires sve.wad, while the original Strife, known as Strife: Quest for the Sigil, requires strife1.wad. The optional file voices.wad is so that you hear voice acting during various in-game menus. If you want that voice acting, place both sve.wad or (strife1.wad instead) and voices.wad in the same folder as GZDoom's executable that Icarus does for the Doom and Doom 2 IWADs. Open GZDoom as normal, then select Strife: Veteran Edition (or Strife: Quest for the Sigil) from the IWAD selection menu. You can also place both sve.wad and strife1.wad in the GZDoom executable's folder and both games will show up in the IWAD selection menu, so you can play either one.

If you are wondering what the differences are between Strife: Quest for the Sigil and Strife: Veteran Edition, go here.

Although not FPS games, the Commander Keen series (whose title character makes a cameo in the second secret level of Doom II) also has a source port, known as Commander Genius. This source port's Gitlab page can be found here. Both pages contain download links for the source port.

What to Do When a Doom Mod Doesn't Run

Quake 1:

Star Wars - Dark Forces

Descent 1 & 2:

Freespace 1 & 2:

Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, & Ion Fury:

Eduke32 runs Duke3D and its expansions, as well as Ion Fury.

VoidSW, which is a separate executable included with Eduke32, runs Shadow Warrior and its own expansions only.

Eduke32 and VoidSW's latest builds currently do not have multiplayer support.

NetDuke32 is the only way to do so for Duke3D. There is also currently no equivalent of NetDuke32 for VoidSW.

When NetDuke32's netcode is eventually completed, that functionality will also be added to the latest builds of both Eduke32 and VoidSW.

Duke Nukem II, although not an FPS, has its own source port based off DN2's reverse engineered source code, known as Rigel Engine.

Duke Nukem I also has its own source port, albeit a recreation of the original game, and not reverse engineered: ReDuke

Blood, Redneck Rampage, & Exhumed / Powerslave:

The BOOK.MOV link is for the Exhumed / Powerslave sourceports PowerslaveGDX and PCExhumed, which need this file in order to play the movie sequences in Exhumed / Powerslave.

Duke4's discord channel also includes subsections for Nblood and PCExhumed.

Raze Sourceport - Duke 3D, Redneck Rampage, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Exhumed / Powerslave, NAM, WW2GI:

Witchaven 1 + 2, TekWar, & Legend of the Seven Paladins:

Catacombs 3D, Catacombs Abyss, Catacombs Armageddon, & Catacombs Apocalypse:

Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, SOD - Return to Danger, & SOD - Ultimate Challenge:

ECWolf also supports the GOG and itch.io releases of the Wolf-3d engine FPS "Super 3D Noah's Ark."

Blake Stone - Aliens of Gold & Planet Strike:

Note: You can also enable debug mode in the Bstone sourceport by running the --cheats command-line option, then pressing Backspace + w once you are in game.

Rise of the Triad - Dark War:

Ken's Labyrinth:

In Pursuit of Greed:

On the Greed CD-Rom page, scroll down to where it says "Full Build (as originally released)" and click on "Greed CD-Rom".

The above xGreed download links can also be found on the xGreed Github page.

Note: xGreed's project status is currently alpha. A lot of things are not tested or not working yet. Direct all questions, comments, or concerns to jval in the above doomworld thread or xGreed Github page.

Star Wars: Dark Forces

To play Star Wars: Dark Forces in The Force Engine, you will need the following files: DARK.GOB, SOUNDS.GOB, SPRITES.GOB, TEXTURES.GOB, HOTKEYS.MSG, LOCAL.MSG, and the full LFD directory.

Purchasing Games DRM-Free from GOG.COM

To extract individual files from any of the GOG installers listed below for the source ports found above, use Inno-Extract.

HacX and Chex Quest 1 & 2 are freeware, so both games are not sold on GOG.

In Duke 3D's case, Gearbox removed Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition from GOG and left the World Tour Edition only available on Steam. Zoom Platform has its own legal arrangement to sell Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition and its expansions DRM-Free.

Although Shadow Warrior is also offered free on GOG, the free version does not come with the expansion packs Wanton Destruction and Twin Dragon as GRP files. Classic Redux does come with those expansion pack group files.

All of the following games are also freeware and/or not actively being sold, so you will not find them on GOG either:

  • TekWar
  • Legend of the Seven Paladins
  • Ken's Labyrinth
  • In Pursuit of Greed
