unable to search for --- or +++ strings #6255

You can try searching for those strings at a public kibana deployment e.g. at
http://logstash.openstack.org/#/dashboard/file/logstash.json.

The little wheel keeps spinning forever.

I've seen this in all Kibana 3 deployments I've tried.

This is a consequence of the elasticsearch mappings. You need an analyzer that can tokenize that in such a way that it remains searchable. Unfortunately outside the realm of Kibana's responsibilities
