Lists, headings and copying work as in Bear

• Leaving a list: Backspace at the start of an empty bullet takes the bullet away, so a heading typed after a list is no longer indented under it.
• Headings in lists: typing ### in a list item turns it into a heading outside the list. # at the start of a heading makes it one level smaller.
• Sub bullets: typing - in a bullet makes a sub bullet (Tab still works).
• Copy to Bear and other apps: copying puts the note's markdown on the clipboard, so lists paste as real lists instead of typed dots. Markdown text you paste in comes in formatted; Shift paste keeps it as plain text.

Pictures in a note

• Paste a picture into a note: a screenshot, or an image copied in your browser or in Finder. It is saved in attachments/ and goes in where the cursor is. Text that has pictures in it still pastes as text.
• Desktop: drop pictures or sounds on the open note and they go in where you drop them. Other files dropped on the note come in as notes, as on the list.
• Fixed: a picture added from a file that was deleted straight after (a pasted one) could go missing on the phone.

Faster start

• The notes list shows straight away, even with a thousand notes. The check for notes changed on other devices now runs after the list is up instead of before it.
• On the iPhone the folder is read in the background, and asking iCloud for missing notes no longer holds up opening and saving notes.

Diagrams

• A diagram is drawn at its own size, never wider than the note. Before, a small diagram filled the whole note on the desktop.
• Settings › Typography › Diagrams makes them all Small, Medium, Large or X-Large. Double-click one to zoom.

Bookmarks

• Bookmark the notes you go back to. The Archive button above a note (on the phone, in its ⋮ menu or when you hold it in the list) is now Bookmark, filled while it's on.
• Bookmarks in the library lists every bookmarked note. Its arrow unfolds them right there: pick one and it opens, with Bookmarks shown beside it.
• A note started while Bookmarks is open is bookmarked. Bookmarks live in the notes folder, so the phone and the desktop share them.
• No more archiving. If you archived notes before, Archive stays in the library until you move them back.

Pinned notes

• A pinned note shows in Notes even when Settings › Hide from Notes names one of its tags.

Notes open without a jump

• The title no longer shows its # when a note opens. The # marks show only while you edit, with the caret at the start of a heading, as in Bear.
• Notes keep their names. A note saved as "Title 2" (because "Title" was taken) was renamed to "Title 3" every time you closed it, and back again the next time. It now keeps its name, on the phone and the desktop.
• The title is drawn in the same Heavy weight on the desktop and the phone.

Phone

• No jump on iOS 27. The text no longer moves a little as a note opens: the first picture of the note and the editor now line up.
• A quicker start. The editor's code no longer loads with the notes list; it loads just after, so the first note still opens at once.

Line numbers

Turn on Settings › Typography › Line numbers for a number beside each line of a note, as in a code editor. A paragraph, heading, list item, picture or table row is one line, and a code block numbers each of its lines. The title has no number. The numbers sit in the margin and never go into the file. On the phone and the desktop.

Headings as in Bear

Put the caret at the start of a heading and its #s show in front of it. Backspace there turns the heading back into text, and # plus a space at the start of a line makes it a heading again.

Desktop

• Settings… in the VB Notes menu on a Mac, after About (⌘,).
• Settings laid out like the phone's: a short list of groups, each opening its own page. Escape goes back.
• Return in a code block breaks the line again right after typing. Before, macOS word suggestions made it take two presses.
• A new note starts in its title line.

Android

• Notes open sooner. The voice recorder only runs while you record.
• No jump as a note opens. The first picture of a note now breaks its lines where the editor does.
• Update ready shows for updates the app downloaded on its own.
• A quicker start. The search model loads 20 s after launch, unless you open Search first. Settings › About shows how long the last start took.

Notes kept only in iCloud open at once

When a Mac runs low on space, macOS can keep iCloud Drive files only in the cloud ("Optimize Mac Storage"). Opening such a note used to show a blank page for a few seconds while it came down.

• VB Notes now asks iCloud to bring your notes back in the background when it opens your folder, so they're there when you click them. Only notes come down; pictures stay where they are.
• A note still on its way says so instead of a blank page.
• The list and search keep working while a note downloads.

Android

The Android app is faster: a smaller app, a lighter editor, and the search index in a database instead of one big file read at every launch.

Fixed

• The notes list shows the right notes after a search. Once a search was cleared, picking a tag or Notes could keep the search results on screen.

Search within a tag

• With a tag picked in the sidebar, the search box looks only at that tag's notes (nested tags included), and with Untagged only at untagged ones. The box says where it is searching.
• Searching all of Notes leaves out the notes of tags in Settings › Hide from Notes, as the list does.
• Quick Open (⌘O / Ctrl+O) still searches every note.

What each answer cost

With OpenRouter, the chat now shows what each answer cost, under the answer. Settings › AI chat shows what you've spent in VB Notes this month, plus your key's own totals and what's left on it.

Questions about all notes cost less

• Only the parts that matter go: instead of whole notes, the chat sends the paragraphs and list items that bear on your question, under their headings. A question now sends about a quarter as much text as before.
• Hidden tags stay out: notes with a tag in Settings › Hide from Notes are never sent with a question about all notes.
• A cheaper default: new setups with OpenRouter or Anthropic start on Claude Haiku, which answers questions about notes well for a fraction of the price. You can pick any model in Settings.

• No white flash at launch. The window now opens already in your theme.

• No more "VB Notes quit unexpectedly" when quitting on a Mac. With search by meaning on, every quit ended in a crash report: the search model was still loaded on the GPU when the app closed. It is now let go first.
