User interface Unicode characters not displayed correctly

While trying to make my own translation for Dev-Cpp, I encountered this issue with Unicode characters:

I encounter the same issue when configuring the display language to some languages that rely on Unicode characters such as Chinese or Korean.

This issue have existed at least since Dev-Cpp 5.11.

@FMXExpress Are there any detailed guides on compiling Dev-Cpp? The README file is a bit too difficult to understand for me.
When I tried compiling any of the packages they give compile errors.

In Source\VCL install DevCpp.dpk. Install Abbrevia from GetIt. Install SynEdit from GetIt. Or from their VCL dirs. Install the packages in Source\VCL\SVGIconImageList\Packages\D10_4. Install the dpk in Source\VCL\ClassBrowsing. If all the dependency components are correctly installed and you are running Delphi 10.4+ you should be able to open dev-cpp.dpr without any errors. Then just compile. Debug outputs to c:\dev-cpp while Release outputs to ..\

As far as more information about this bug. Each language file relies on the native language being in the original codepage of that language. So if you are running on Greek Windows with a default codepage of 1253 the Greek language will show correct.

The Greek.lng file itself contains both ANSI and codepage 1253 characters. Notepad++ can edit these files correctly.

The real fix would be to convert the lng files to be UTF8. But the code I checked in loads the strings with the correct codepage now allowing them to load regardless of the default codepage of Windows.

It seems that UTF-8 .lng files aren't still working yet. For example, Japanese isn't displaying correctly, either with the original file or the file converted to UTF-8 using notepad++

I used (CPID: 932; CPName: 'shift_jis'; CPLang: 'Japanese';), for Japanese. Maybe it is a different one.

I tried codepages 943, 20932, and 51932 none of those worked for Japanese either.

What about UTF-8? Why don't files encoded using UTF-8 work?

Versions of Windows are localized to their language. So they are using ANSI but the codepage is shift_jis or whatever. Why these files are some kind of combo between codepage 1252 and the language codepage is unknown. May have something to do the the Win32 INI file APIs. So yes a solution would be to convert all of them to UTF8 and be done with it. Alternately I could convert the Japanese language ones to UTF8 and then load it with UTF8 since I can't figure out what codepage it's using.

Why can't you just run some kind of a script that converts everything to UTF-8 and make Dev-Cpp use UTF-8 for all languages?
