ThermalBar 2.0

@evilork evilork released this 03 Nov 02:06

ThermalBar 2.0 is a full rewrite. It reads every sensor itself, so there is nothing else to install: no Homebrew, no macmon, no helper process and no sudo.

Fixed

  • Supports macOS 13 Ventura and newer again. Version 1.0 was built for macOS 26 only by mistake (#2).

New

  • Statistics you can export. ThermalBar keeps a minute-by-minute history on your Mac for 90 days. Pick today, 7 days, 30 days or any dates and save a report with charts (HTML) or a spreadsheet (CSV).
  • Memory pressure replaces "RAM %". It is the rating macOS itself uses to decide when the Mac is short of memory. Swap use is shown too.
  • Throttling indicator. You see when heat starts to slow the Mac down.
  • GPU clock and load, with a hint when the GPU is stuck at a low clock under full load (a restart usually fixes it).
  • Fan speed, optional in the menu bar.
  • Peaks for today and for your last game. Game sessions are detected automatically.
  • Top 3 apps by CPU or memory, right in the panel.
  • Settings window. Choose what the menu bar shows, one or two lines, colors and thresholds (defaults are tuned per chip: base, Pro, Max, Ultra), update interval, panel transparency and open at login.
  • Notifications for memory pressure, throttling and a stuck GPU. Each one can be turned off.
  • English and Russian. The app follows the system language, and you can switch it in Settings.
  • New panel design with a transparency slider, and a new app icon.
  • Settings are always reachable. If the notch or a menu bar manager hides the item, open ThermalBar again from Finder or Spotlight and the settings window appears.
  • Light on your Mac. In our measurements it uses about 1% of one CPU core with the panel closed; the panel is drawn only while it is open.

Install

  1. Download ThermalBar.zip below.
  2. Unzip it and drag ThermalBar.app to Applications.
  3. Open it. The app is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens without warnings.

Upgrading from 1.0: quit the old app and replace it with the new one. On first launch 2.0 switches off the old com.evilork.macmon helper agent by itself. macmon stays installed; remove it with brew uninstall macmon if nothing else uses it.

Requirements: an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer) and macOS 13 Ventura or newer.

Source code: version 1.0 was open source. From 2.0 the source code is closed; the app stays free.

ThermalBar.zip and ThermalBar-2.0.0.zip are the same file. SHA-256:
