Public domain names: the fips address right after connecting

The first lookup of a public domain served over fips could still take 20–30 s after you connected. Until it finished, the app got the domain's ordinary Internet address. The domain's server was usually several mesh hops away, and finding a route to it took most of that time.

The app now links directly to the servers of the two domains you verified most recently, as soon as it connects. Measured on a Pixel 9 Pro, the first lookup returned the fips address 0.25 s after the query, 4 s after connecting.

This comes with a new switch, on by default: Settings → Link directly to the servers of domains you use. A direct link shows that server's operator, and the Nostr relays, that your node talks to that server. Turn the switch off to keep relying on routes through the mesh.

fips-pub-domains 0.2.10 also helps:

  • it opens the path to pinned servers a few seconds after a connect, before any app asks;
  • when a server was unreachable on the first try, it asks again in the background instead of waiting out the whole backoff.

Network switches

  • The mesh stays up when IPv6 comes or goes. Switching between an IPv6 network and one without it (often Wi-Fi to mobile data) used to restart the mesh connection for about 6 s. Now only the tunnel is replaced; the node, its links and its sessions stay up. Changing the selected mesh apps works the same way.
  • Stuck connections now close. After a network switch, a clearnet connection whose server side had died stayed open on the app's side. Apps waited on it until their own timeout (about 70 s in DuckDuckGo). The app now closes it at once, so apps reconnect within about a second.

No new permissions. Installing over 0.9.7 keeps identity and settings.

Checked on a Pixel 9 Pro (arm64). The other two ABIs were built and checked in CI but have not run on hardware for this release.

Which APK

Most phones: fips-android-v0.10.0-arm64-v8a.apk. If you are unsure, -universal.apk carries all three ABIs for a first install; the in-app updater picks the per-ABI APK.
